BOSTON RED SOX (22-29) vs. MINNESOTA TWINS (30-19) Tuesday, June 2, 2015 7:10 p.m. ET Fenway Park, Boston, MA RHP Clay Buchholz (2-6, 4.33) vs. RHP Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 2.77) Game #52 Home Game #23 TV: NESN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) FENWAY RAINOUT: Last night s Red Sox game against the Twins at Fenway Park was postponed due to wet grounds and forecasted rain...the game will be made up tomorrow at 1:35 p.m. as the first game of a split-admission, daynight doubleheader...it will be followed by the regularlyscheduled 7:10 p.m. contest. ROAD TRIP RECAP: The Red Sox lost to the Rangers on Sunday, 4-3, in walk-off fashion at Globe Life Park...It concluded a 1-6 road trip through Minnesota (0-3) and Texas (1-3) in which Boston was outscored 35-19...Of the 6 losses, 3 were by 2 runs or less, including a pair of 1-run losses. STATE OF THE SOX: This is the 14th day in a season-long stretch of 20 consecutive days with a game scheduled from 5/19-6/7 (4-9 thus far). The Red Sox have lost 3 straight and are 1-6 in their last 7 games...they have gone 3-8 in their last 11 contests and are 9-12 since ending a 1-7 stretch with a win on 5/10. DIVISIONAL DISCUSSION: At 22-29, the Sox are a season-high 7 games under.500...with the Yankees improving to 27-25 yesterday, Boston fell to 4.5 games back in the standings and remain in last place for a 4th straight day. The Yankees and Rays yesterday entered the month of June tied for the division lead with identical 26-25 records (.510)...According to Elias, that was the worst record by an AL East leader entering June in the divisional era (since 1969). YAWKEY TALKIE: The Sox begin a 7-game homestand tonight against the Twins (4G) and then the Athletics (3G) before heading out for a brief 3-game road trip to Baltimore from 6/9-11...The Sox play 12 of their fi rst 15 and of their fi rst 23 June games at home. Red Sox hit.303 (63-for-208) with 7 home runs in splitting their last homestand, a 6-gamer from 5/19-24 (3-3)...They had 11 or more hits in 4 of those games, including the last 3...Boston has gone deep in 18 of its 22 home games thus far this season. Dustin Pedroia has hit.325 (26-for-80) at home this season...mike Napoli has 9 of his 14 extra-base hits at home this season for a.563 SLG at Fenway Park (T-8th in AL). MONTH BY MONTH: After a 12-10 April, tied for 5th best in the AL, Boston went 10-19 in May (last in AL), the club s fewest wins in any May since 1997 (9-17)...The team s 22-29 record is its worst entering June since the same year (also 22-29 through May in 1997). After ranking 3rd in the majors with 113 runs scored in April, the Red Sox offense ranked last among the 30 teams with only 82 runs scored in May...In 29 games last month, they were held to 2 runs 7 times, 1 run 6 times, and were blanked 3 times. Red Sox hurlers posted an MLB-high 5.04 ERA in April but it was nearly a run lower in May (4.12). LEADING MAN: Dustin Pedroia went 0-for-5 yesterday, his fi rst hitless game in the last 9 games since taking over as Boston s leadoff hitter...as the leadoff man this season, he is batting.324 (12-for-37), including a 2-homer effort on Wednesday at MIN. It also snapped a streak of reaching base in 18 consecutive leadoff starts, which began on 5/10/14 (.329, 24-for-73, 6 BB)...In his career, he has reached in 103 of 122 starts in the lineup s 1-spot (84%). DEEP THOUGHTS: The Red Sox have 6 players each with at least 5 home runs in Hanley Ramirez (12), Mike Napoli (8), Dustin Pedroia (7), David Ortiz (6), Mookie Betts (5), and Pablo Sandoval (5)...The Astros are the only AL team that have more players with at least 5 homers, with 7 such players...seattle and New York also have 6 such players. TWIN TALK: Tonight the Red Sox and Twins continue their 7-game season set with the fi rst of 4 games this year between these teams at Fenway Park. They opened the season set at Target Field last Monday through Wednesday, a 3-game sweep by Minnesota in which the Sox were outscored 13-6 and crossed the plate no more than 3 runs in any single contest. Despite going 0-3 against the Twins in 2015, the Sox have won their season set each of the past 8 seasons (2007-14)...Boston needs a sweep of the current 4-game set to sustain its longest ever season series win streak against this franchise (since 1901). Dustin Pedroia (.345, 76-for-220) and David Ortiz (.332, 80-for-241) rank 3rd and 6th, respectively, among active players in AVG against the Twins (min. 150 PA). CHAMPS BACK TOGETHER: Both Red Sox hitting coach Chili Davis and pitching coach Carl Willis, who was named to the post on 5/9, were both members of the last Twins team that won a World Series in 1991. WHEN WE LAST MET: The Red Sox and Twins have eac swept their last home series against the other...boston dropped all 3 games in Minnesota last week...the last time they met in Boston, the Red Sox swept, winning the 3 games from 6/16-18/14 by scores of 1-0, 2-1, and 2-1... According to Elias, Boston s 5 runs marked their fewest ever in a sweep of 3+ games. REHAB NEWS: Justin Masterson, on the 15-day DL since 5/14 (retro to 5/13) with right shoulder tendinitis, began a rehab stint Sunday with a start for Triple-A Pawtucket against Louisville (CIN)...He took the loss allowing 3 runs (2 ER) in 1.2 innings and threw 50 pitches. Masterson is slated to continue his rehab with a start in Double-A Portland s game on Friday night s home game against Bowie (BAL) beginning at 7:00 p.m. LAYNE S GAMES: Tommy Layne retired his first batter faced Sunday in Texas, getting Shin-Soo Chu to ground out and strand a runner at 2nd base...he has now stranded his last 8 inherited runners and his 90.9% strand rate (10 of 11) ranks T-6th in AL. He retired his 1st batter faced in all 14 outings during the month of May, and in 17 of 18 (94.4%) of his total outings in 2015...Among AL pitchers, his.336 OPS against left-handed hitters ranks T-8th (min. 35 PA). BOSTON BITS: Boston has benefi tted from 46 opponent errors this season, tied with Texas for the major league lead, which has resulted in the Red Sox scoring more unearned runs (29) than any other team in MLB. Boston has 113 starts from players age 23 or younger (Betts, 47; Bogaerts, 46; Swihart, 20), nearly twice as many as the next AL team (BAL, 58)...In MLB, only the Cubs have at least as many such (130). The club has scored 45% of its runs with 2 outs (87 of 195), the highest rate among AL teams...the Sox lead the AL in OBP with 2 outs (.354). Mookie Betts leads the major leagues with 925 pitches seen this season. Hanley Ramirez has multi-hits in 3 of his last 4 games (.353, 6-for-17)...He has driven in 5 runs in the last 7 contests after 19 consecutive games without an RBI from 5/1-24. PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Yesterday, High-A Salem RHP Teddy Stankiewicz was selected as Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for 5/25-31...In his only start during the week, on Memorial Day, the 2nd-round selection in the 2012 draft tossed 8.0 shutout innings on 2 hits and earned the win vs. Winston-Salem, fanning 4.
