He found himself singing along with the callers and quickly developed an interest that led him to a caller s class. He began calling regularly in 1987 and enjoyed the counsel of several mentors over the years, including, Mike Sikorsky, Don Schadt, Michael Kellogg, Nate Bliss, Vic Kaaria, and Mike Duffy. During his calling tenure he became known for showcasing interesting choreography, and he developed a love for working with other callers. By the turn of the new century, Michael had left square dancing and shifted focus to play the banjo and guitar. Life soon brought another focus, where Michael concentrated on his engineering job and family. He still found time for a little formal study in jazz guitar, composing, and a variety of vocal pursuits. Recently, he found himself coming full circle and wandered back to square dancing and calling. Michael is part of The Shakedown Band as the perfect fit for a guy with a love for calling, working with other callers, and making music. He is happy to be part of such an exciting venture. Notes from Rosalie David & Dawn Mee called and cued our June Luau dance. Margie Zingg decorated, and Joe & Vi Henderson greeted our guests. Everyone was dressed for the festivities in island attire, per the luau theme. Muriel Greenwood, Marie Schmidt, and Charlene Willem assisted Ron, Rosalie and Chris with the food and drinks. We had a lot of good food thanks to our great members. If you would like to assist our super kitchen crew, I m sure they would think fantastic thoughts of you for doing so; just pop by and ask Rosalie where you can stick your hands! As much as this may embarrass my mother and me, we know it is all in good faith to bring positive attention, and promote the square dancing life style and show the world how much fun it really is, via YouTube. Well, on June 30 th, he was recognized for all that he does by the CCHA, at the 63 rd Anniversary Hoedown, he was presented with the prestigious award of Dancer Of The Year. We are all so very proud of him, and he really does deserve it for all that he does. So the next time you see him, camera in hand or not, smile and thank him for all that he does! Class is continuing is progressing and should be graduating August 8 th -- yippie! Keep your eyes peeled! Flyers for the new class are coming to a hard surface (stage/table/etc.) near you! Vic Kaaria - Class Caller/Instructor Good news for all the traditionalists out there; starting SEPTEMBER 19 TH we will be returning to the one phase class schedule (as opposed to the Phase I/Phase II schedule), with a brand new group of smiling faces (brought to us by YOU)! Congrats to the ladies learning the BOYZ part at our Wednesday class - Karin S., Janet J., Shawn H., and Marilyn T. are our current BOYZ in the class. They will join recently graduated Rosalie N. and Muriel G., along with Sue G., Barbara C., Melinda T.,and Jackie B. who have previously gone thru the class to earn their BOYZ badge. *single ladies; please consider learning the BOYZ part this fall when the new class starts. You will get to dance more and it improves your dancing. It is also a great help for the club in the Wednesday classes. We encourage all club members to come to the Wednesday workshop and class. The workshop is the perfect place to get ready to go dancing by brushing up on the calls and get a good laugh. Club members, when you attend the class as an Angel you not only help the class members to learn various square dance technique, you also demonstrate to them that square dancing is about more than just the calls and movements -- it's about Fun, it's about Fitness, and it's about Friendship. Now, for some sad news; The workshop will be dark on AUGUST 15 TH & 22 ND. R TWIRLER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are still in need of a Club Historian. If you like to scrapbook, this is just the job for you! Talk to Sue Gibson or Lorie Abeles if you re interested. R HELP PLAN THE FALL CLASS! This is a great opportunity to set the tone for our Club. Please talk to Sue Gibson or Lorie Abeles (951-764- 3347) by phone or catch one of us at a workshop or dance. R SEND US PHOTOS of yourself from long ago and we ll share them and add a little guessing game with them. R RIBBONS FOR THE 13TH ANNUAL Breast Cancer Square Dance are now for sale! Lorie has the ribbons, they are $6. The dance October 21 st, price at the door is $8. R IDEAS, PHOTOS OR QUESTIONS, info to include, e- mail us at canyonlaketwirlers@gmail.com or phone me at (951) 750-4866. Deadline for our next issue July 29 th. R THE CITY OF CANYON LAKE would like information regarding members providing services of any kind for our Military. Both Barbara Canfield and Melinda Townsend have done sewing projects and the club has provided boxes of items for the servicemen. The club and individual members have contributed to the Veteran s Memorial in Canyon Lake. If you have any further information, please send it to Rosalie Nusser and Barbara Canfield. R A REMINDER: the club has a minimum age for participation in the class/workshop. Children must be 10 years old and accompanied by a parent/adult to dance with them. Be an Angel - support the class! July August 2012 Page 5

Today is the installation of the Club Board of Directors for the year 2012-2013. We are extremely pleased and happy with those who have volunteered their time to help keep our club running smoothly. Thank you again for your service. Melinda Townsend is retiring from the position of Publicity this year, but she will be active at our Wednesday workshops and Sunday dances on the solo board. Welcome to the new people on the Board! Susan Miranda is heading up our Publicity Director; Andy Young will be taking over as Treasurer, while Jackie and Bill Brown are moving into the job of Vice President. Marilyn Taylor and Steve Falgout will be our Class Managers. Wilbur and Karin Sanchez will be our CCHA representatives. We really appreciate those who worked last year and are staying in their positions for this year also. We are teaching the plus calls this summer at our Wednesday classes. Please come and participate. The continuing class will graduate August 8 th. After the graduation, we will be DARK for two weeks and then back to workshops starting August 29 th. New fall class will begin on September 19 th Just around the corner. We are asking all of our members to pass out and post flyers for our fall class. We have gone back to the traditional system of fall to spring and need to make sure we have a big class. Please take flyers and do your part to help us. Bring your friends and acquaintances and make sure everyone knows how much fun square dancing is. We hope everyone has a good summer and takes the time to go dancing. Sue & Randy Summer is here and it s HOT, HOT HOT! Do we still have to wear full, traditional square dance clothing? Fortunately, most all clubs have themes for their club dances and they also gear their themes during the summer months to cooler dress, i.e. short pants, crazy shirts, safari. As a rule of thumb, stay within the theme of the dance, or if it s a visitation, as the board recommends club dress or theme dress. If it s theme dress, be comfortable (not PJ s comfy), but nice and clean comfy. It s still okay to wear your square dance clothes too. July August 2012 Page 6
