LeVelle Moton Head Coach- Fourth Season NCCU (1996) Head Coach Second Season at NCCU Record at NCCU: 39-52 (3 years) Career Record: 39-52 (3 years) The LeVelle Moton File Date of Birth: June 16, 1974 Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts Family: Wife, Bridget; Daughter, Brooke Education: Bachelor of Science, NCCU, 1996 Head Coaching Experience: NCCU (2009-Present) Sanderson High School (2004-2007) Assistant Coaching Experience: NCCU, (2007-2009) Heading into his fourth season in charge of the North Carolina Central University basketball program, head coach LeVelle Moton took his team to a place not since seen since the 2004-05 season when the Eagles finished with a winning record (17-15) and were seeded fifth in their first MEAC Tournament at the Division I level. NCCU is 24-11 inside the friendly confines of McDougald- McLendon Gym during his tenure. Of the 215 schools that have reclassified to the NCAA Division I level, NCCU is one of 38 schools across the nation who finished their first official season with 17 wins or more. That puts the Eagles in the same company as (Air Force-1958, VCU-1974, Weber State-1964, George Mason-1979, UNLV-1970, James Madison-1977, and Northwestern State (La.)-1997) who also recorded 17 wins in its inaugural campaign. His second year at the helm his squad showed the Eagle Nation that this team is going to wreck havoc in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference when everything becomes official. With his team truly buying into the system, he racked up 15 wins and recorded the first non-losing season in nearly six years. His record against MEAC opponents during the regular season was 10-5 which would have placed him as the number two seed in the league tournament, but in no way, shape, or form is this team going to rest on their laurels. Moton has one agenda here at NCCU and that s to build this program into In his first season Moton took the program numerous steps in the right direction and is on target to make the program a winner at the Division I level when they become eligible for championships. During the 2009-10 campaign, Moton led NCCU to its first winning record at home (7-4), it s first Division I winning streak (three games), and gave numerous big-time LeVelle Moton s passion and fire pushed NCCU to its most wins at the Division I level in his first season. (Photo by Rick Crank) opponents trouble throughout the season, but the second year head coach is nowhere near satisfied. The Eagles finished 7-22, which included wins against soon-to-be conference foes Maryland Eastern Shore and Savannah N.C. Central stayed within its family wisely in hiring Coach Moton. As a player, he was fearless and his career statistics indicate that. Having grown up, played and coached in the Triangle area, he understands the local landscape. He will be an excellent role model for his players and NCCU is fortunate to have him lead the basketball program into a promising future. -Mike Krzyzewski- Duke University State. The seven victories represents the most since making the move to Division I. Looking at more than just win totals, the program made major strides in its style of play on both the offensive and defensive sides of the floor. The squad s discipline and team unity definitely showed when times got

tough last season. It s clear to see that once Moton gets his student-athletes into the program, that NCCU basketball will certainly be a factor, not only in the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), but among the mid-majors in terms of being competitive. On March 25, 2009, arguably one of the greatest players in school history was elevated from Assistant Coach to the position of Head Coach, becoming the 17th to be named in that spot in the program s "A few years ago I said LeVelle is a rising star in the coaching ranks. The improvement of his program the last few years completely legitimizes that. They are going to get better and better. He knows what he is doing." - Roy Williams- University of North Carolina history. The school announced his hiring at a press conference where Director of Athletics, Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree displayed her confidence in giving Moton his first head coaching position. First of all, LeVelle is a wonderful person, said Wicker-McCree. He s a players coach that understands the importance of discipline in a program, along with being a very charismatic person which are all aspects of a coach that this university needs. With NCCU continuing the Division I transition process, Moton knows full well the challenges that lie ahead for this program. By looking at the success of his playing career where, he racked up an 80-28 record which inlcluded three 20-wins seasons, Eagle fans are hoping his previous success translates to more marks in the win column. We re not going to be oblivious to the fact that we re still in the trenches, and we have a uphill climb in front of us. said Moton. However, Confucius once said that he who believes he can and he who believes he can t are both usually right. He initially returned to his alma mater as assistant men s basketball coach in July 2007. The Hall-of-Famer joined the NCCU staff after serving as head boys basketball coach at Sanderson High School in his hometown of Raleigh, N.C. During his three-year tenure (2004-07) at Sanderson, Moton led the Spartans to an overall record of 59-25, while winning back-to-back Cap-7 tournament championships in 2006 and 2007. A 1996 graduate of NCCU with a bachelor s degree in recreation administration, Moton became the school s third all-time leading scorer with 1,714 points during his historic hardwood career as an Eagle from 1992-96, earning the nickname Poetry `n Moton. During his junior and senior seasons, Moton was voted All-CIAA First Team, NCAA Division II South Atlantic All-Region First Team and NCAA Division II All-America Honorable Mention. He was named the 1996 CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Men s Basketball Player of the Year and was inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Among NCCU s all-time career leaders, Moton ranks first in 3-point field goals made (213 of 529), third in scoring (1,714 points), fourth in free throws made (363 of 467), fifth in assists (278), eighth in field goals made (569 of 1,159), 10th in scoring average (16.6 points per game), and 11th in steals (110). As a junior (1994-95), he topped the CIAA and was No. 16 in the NCAA Division II in scoring with an average of 23.5 points per game. His 87 made three-point field goals that year remains the school s single-season record. As a senior (1995-96), he placed second in the CIAA with 21.3 points per game and ranked among the conference s top 10 statistical leaders in assists, free throw percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. Moton played on three CIAA Southern NCCU Head Coach LeVelle Moton (Photo by Red Rocket Photography) Division Championship teams and made two trips to the NCAA playoffs, including an NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Championship title in 1993. After NCCU, Moton played four years of professional basketball in Indonesia (1996-97) and Israel (1998-99). Throughout his professional playing career, Moton averaged 25.0 points per contest, and dished out a little more than five assists per game as a pro. He was head coach at West Millbrook Middle School for three seasons (2001-04) before taking over the Sanderson boys basketball program in 2004. Moton is a 1992 graduate of Enloe High School in Raleigh, N.C., where he was named Cap5 Player of the Year as a senior. Moton and his wife, Bridget, married on June 28, 2008. The couple celebrated the birth of their first child, Brooke, on March 12, 2009, just 13 days prior to being named Head Coach.

2011-12 NCCU MEN S BASKETBALL PREVIEW NCCU looks to begin MEAC play strong in first year as NCAA Division I Member Entering year number four in the LeVelle Moton era at North Carolina Central University, it s clear to see that the Eagles are ready to compete with the top teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after posting a 10-6 mark in league action, finishing its first official NCAA Division I season with a winning record at 17-15, and nearly advancing to the semifinals of the league tournament in its first attempt, as they strive to improve upon a successful first campaign in the second season as official conference members. Of the 215 schools that have reclassified to the NCAA Division I level, NCCU is one of 38 schools across the nation that finished its first official season with 17 wins or more. That puts the Eagles in the same company as Air Force (1958), VCU (1974), Weber State (1964), George Mason (1979), UNLV (1970), James Madison (1977), and Northwestern State (La.) (1997), which also recorded 17 or more wins in its inaugural Division I campaign. With six returners, including three (Ray Willis, Emanuel Chapman, and Ebuka Anyaorah) who started more than 21 contests, the Eagles will welcome seven newcomers into the fold for the 2012-13 campaign. The core group of our returners will be relied upon heavily to provide leadership both on and off the court, said Moton. Their first MEAC experience should provide a pathway of success in terms of understanding the daily competition and challenges this conference presents. Willis leads all returnees as he is coming off a second team All-MEAC campaign where he averaged 14.6 points a game, which was seventh in the league. The Atlanta, Ga., native finished the year with four double-doubles and scored 20- plus points on four different occasions, including a career-high 28 points against Delaware State on Jan. 28. Willis also earned MEAC player of the week honors twice during the regular season. As the team s point guard for most of the season, Chapman quietly had one of the best offensive seasons by an NCCU floor leader since the 1979-80 campaign, as the sophomore dished out 162 assists, averaging 5.06 per game, to end the year second in the MEAC. Chapman had five games of 10 assists or more, including 14 against Barber-Scotia and 11 in conference play against Maryland Eastern Shore. Chapman has risen into NCCU s top-15 all-time in helpers with 220, passing Shawn Ray who amassed 215 assists from 2000-03. In his first season as an Eagle, Anyaorah flashed his offensive ability to the maroon and gray faithful by scoring in double figures 13 times, including a careerhigh 25 points in a near upset of East Carolina on the road on Dec. 29. The Suwanee, Ga., native hit 39 three-pointers on the year in his 21 starts. Coming off the bench in his sophomore season, Jeremy Ingram became known as The Spark. He averaged just under 23 minutes a game and scored 9.3 points a contest shooting 35.9 percent from three-point range. The Charlotte, N.C., native torched Howard on Jan. 16 for a career-high 27 points that included a 10-for-14 effort from the field. Ingram scored in double figures 13 times in 26 games played. Sophomore Karamo Jawara (Bergen, Norway) enters his second season looking to earn more minutes and improve upon his rookie campaign where he saw action in 31 of 32 games. Senior Jonathan Nicely (Augusta, Ga.) will look to end his career on a high note to round out the returners on NCCU s squad. With the talent that Moton compiled, many folks around the conference were Ray Willis and his 14.6 points per game leads all returners in the 2012-13 season. Willis was named 2nd team All-MEAC as a junior. (Photo by Red Rocket) not all that surprised with the early success of the Eagles, but the second time around the maroon and gray will have to rely on seven newcomers to see how high the program can climb in the 2012-2013 season. A duo of redshirt sophomores Jay Copeland and DavRon Williams, who were both on campus last season, will finally make their NCCU debut this year and will be counted on to give the Eagles a boost in the post. At 6-7, 235 pounds, Copeland transferred to the Bull City from Ball State and did not play due to NCAA transfer rules. Hailing from Suffolk, Va., Copeland has fans excited with this size and athletic ability. Williams missed last season due to a shoulder injury, but he is another intriguing prospect at 6-7, 210 pounds. Jay and DavRon should give us some much need frontcourt help, said Moton. Those two have the ability to score inside, which is something we will need in this league to be successful. The final five pieces of the puzzle will certainly have an impact on the Eagles success beginning at the point guard position with Drimir Ferguson (Bronx, N.Y.), who at 5-9 was the unquestioned leader of the one of the top junior colleges in the nation in Monroe Community College. At 6-7, 225 pounds, Stanton Kidd (Baltimore, Md.) comes to NCCU as an extremely athletic forward, while incoming freshman Ramon Johnson (Newark, N.J.) stands at 6-9 giving Moton plenty of options when it comes to going big or small. The final two signees were teammates at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., as guard Alfonzo Houston (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and Antonin Galaya (St. Maarten, Virgin Islands) come to the maroon and gray nation with the ability to put the ball in the basket squarely in their arsenal. At 6-3, Houston is known more as a scorer, while the 6-5 Galaya has the reputation that he s a

sharp shooter, all very vital in Moton s system. We feel great about our recruiting class, said Moton. All of our incoming recruits will be forced to adapt to the Division I basketball game quickly. We needed a leader like Ferguson to come in to orchestrate the floor and make everyone s job easier. Moton added two more walk-ons Jordan Marrow (Cleveland, Ohio) and local product Rashawn King (Raleigh, N.C.) to complete the Eagle roster. For NCCU to be successful with the amount of newcomers and returners, putting together a cohesive unit is key. For us to be successful, chemistry is essential, said Moton. Each guy must sacrifice something immediately for this program to get better. In Moton s three seasons as the head coach, the Eagles have increased the win total each year and the next step for the program after finishing in the top five last season is to continue to move up the MEAC ladder. I think it s important for us to move up the chain each and every year, said Moton. Every year we believe that anything less than a championship is unacceptable. Our goals are to win the MEAC regular-season Jeremy Ingram s 27 at Howard last and tournament titles and make it to the Big Dance. season sparked the Eagles to the big The way that road win. (Howard Athletics) Moton and the NCCU Emanuel Chapman paced the Eagle offense with basketball program 162 assists (Red Rocket Photography) continues to progress it will be no surprise to anyone if the Eagles are the team cutting down the nets.
