Tynan opened the scoring just four minutes into last Friday s 3-2 overtime shootout victory at No. 9 Boston College and found the back of the boards again during the shootout. She added two goals and an assist against No. 22 Boston University to match her career-best points performance (5). Steele was tabbed the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this fall after matching her career best with nine saves against the Eagles. She added three more stops last Sunday at Boston University. In addition to the recognition from the conference office, Tynan was tabbed the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week and was an honorable mention selection for the National Field Hockey Coaches Association s Division I Weekly Award. SOLID STEELE AGAINST BOSTON COLLEGE Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sammi Steele totaled nine saves through regulation and two overtime periods, and stopped the Eagles on three of five shootout attempts in last Friday night s win. Steele and the Blue Devils defensive unit held strong against two Boston College penalty corners and five shots in the first overtime. Steele then added four more saves in the second overtime period. The nine stops matched Steele s career high, set against Maryland last season. DEFENSE ONE OF NATION S BEST Stingy defense has guided the Blue Devils to six consecutive victories heading into this weekend s action. Duke is ranked third nationally in goals against average (0.86) and fourth in shutouts per game (0.50) with five shutouts on the season. Blue Devil opponents are averaging just 10.4 shots per contest. Redshirt sophomore Sammi Steele leads all ACC goalkeepers and ranks fourth in the country with a.809 save percentage. She also ranks second in the ACC and fourth nationally in goals against average (0.86). Four different Blue Devils - Alyssa Chillano, Alexa Mackintire, Stephanie Pezzuti and Jillian Wolgemuth - have recorded defensive saves on the year. She earned the 250th victory of her career Sept. 24 against Old Dominion. The 252 career victories rank her 14th among all active Division I head coaches. HIGH-FLYING ATTACK Duke has gotten on the board first in all nine of its victories on the season. The Blue Devil attack enters the weekend ranked third in the ACC and top-15 nationally behind nine goals from junior forward Rose Tynan. Tynan had 12 goals through the first two seasons of her career at Duke. Senior Ashley Kristen is second behind Tynan (21) in points (11), while junior Erin Scherrer has contributed five goals off the bench, including two last weekend in Boston. AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS The Blue Devils have gone 7-1 against ranked foes and will face two more this weekend in No. 9 Syracuse and No. 23 Iowa. THE BIG TEN The Blue Devils are 39-54-4 historically against teams from the Big Ten. Duke defeated Maryland and Northwestern earlier this season at the B1G/ACC Cup in Lancaster, Pa. ALL-REGION RETURNERS Duke returns a quartet of NFHCA All-South Region selections this fall in senior back Alyssa Chillano, senior forward Ashley Kristen, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sammi Steele and sophomore midfielder Margaux Paolino. A preseason All-ACC pick, Chillano led the Blue Devils in points (32) and goals (13) a year ago while anchoring the defense from the center back position. Paolino ranked second in the ACC and fifth nationally last season with 14 assists, while Kristen tallied seven. Steele took over as the Blue Devils starter in goal in 2016, ranking third in the ACC in goals against average (1.39) and save percentage (.730). BLUE DEVILS WELCOME CLASS OF 2021 Head coach Pam Bustin bolstered the Duke roster with the addition of five freshmen student-athletes. The class includes Libby Thompson of Illinois, Lily Posternak of Maine, Lexi Davidson of Massachusetts, Lydia Smeltz of Pennsylvania and Kira-Lee Gmeiner of Australia. The group was included in MAX Field Hockey s Top 10 Division I Incoming Classes. NEW FACES TO KNOW Head coach Pam Bustin brought Ralph Boersma on board the Duke coaching staff in March. Boersma previously spent a number of years overseeing teams for the HV Victoria hockey club and the HC Hoeksche Waard club program in his native country of The Netherlands. More recently, Bustin rounded out the coaching staff with the addition of Tracey Griesbaum as a volunteer assistant coach. A veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks, Griesbaum spent 14 seasons as the head coach at the University of Iowa (2000-13). PAM BUSTIN HEAD COACH SEVENTH SEASON AT DUKE MASSACHUSETTS, 1990 A two-time ACC and NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year and a member of the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame, Pam Bustin has revitalized the Duke field hockey program in her six seasons in Durham, guiding the Blue Devils to a 90-45 ledger and a trip to the 2013 NCAA title game. The Duke program accomplished a number of firsts in 2016, capturing its first ACC regular season title and reaching No. 1 in the national poll for the first time in school history. Under Bustin s watch, the Blue Devils earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive season. The squad compiled a 16-4 ledger against the nation s toughest schedule and featured a pair of first-time All-Americans in Alyssa Chillano and Heather Morris. At the conclusion of the season, Bustin was honored as the ACC and NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year. The 2015 season saw Duke earn a spot in the NCAA semifinals for the second time in three years. Under Bustin s direction, the Blue Devils went 14-7, with 11 of the 14 wins coming against ranked opponents. The squad matched a program record with seven players on the NFHCA All-South Region teams and boasted a pair of All-Americans in goalkeeper Lauren Blazing and midfielder Aileen Johnson. The Blue Devils earned their third NCAA Tournament bid in four years in 2014, concluding the season in the quarterfinals with a 13-7 record. Bustin s squad started off the fall on a six-game win streak for the program s best start to a season since 1978. Duke hosted the ACC Tournament for the first time since 2008 and had three All-America selections in Abby Beltrani, Lauren Blazing and Aileen Johnson. A historic 2013 campaign saw Bustin guide Duke to the NCAA championship match for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2005. The Blue Devils reached the title match with a 3-2 semifinal upset of top-ranked and top-seeded Maryland, a win that also marked the 200th of Bustin s collegiate coaching career. The squad finished the fall with a 17-7 ledger, including five wins over top-10 opponents, while Paula Heimbach, Emmie Le Marchand and Lauren Blazing received All-America recognition and Bustin was named the South Region Coach of the Year. In 2012, Duke sent six players to the Junior Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where they gained valuable international playing experience despite missing five regular season games. The Blue Devils concluded the fall with a 7-11 record, though 10 of the 11 losses on the season were to opponents ranked in the top 25 nationally. Bustin s first year at Duke saw the team finish the season ranked sixth in the nation, advance to the 2011 ACC Championship match with a 2-1 victory over eventual national champion Maryland in the semifinals and earn an NCAA tournament bid. Bustin earned ACC Coach of the Year honors at the conclusion of the season for the third conference coach of the year accolade of her career. She was previously named Big East Coach of the Year and MAC Coach of the Year. In six years, Bustin has overseen 15 All-America selections, 33 All-South Region picks and 20 All-ACC honorees. During her tenure, the team has also excelled off the field with 25 selections to the All-ACC Academic team. The squad has been recognized at a national level, twice earning Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team distinction after compiling a collective team grade point average that ranks among the best in the country. Individually, 30 Blue Devils have been named to the Division I National Academic Squad, with four student-athletes receiving Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction accolades and Lauren Blazing winning the Elite 90 Award in 2015. USA FIELD HOCKEY EXPERIENCE In addition to her collegiate coaching duties, Bustin has served as an assistant coach with the United States National Under-19 and Under-21 teams, working regularly to develop the nation s junior players. She was previously an assistant for the U.S. National Team, helping the United States to an eighth place finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bustin guided the United States to the country s first Olympic berth since 1996 as the team went 6-0 at the Kazan Olympic Qualifier in 2008. Bustin is a U.S. Field Hockey accredited Level III coach and instructs coaching courses throughout the country as well. Prior to coaching at the Olympic level, Bustin served as team captain on the United States Under-21 team from 1987-89, competing in the 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1990 U.S. Olympic Festivals. In 1989, she helped the U.S. capture a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Games before being named to the U.S. National Team, playing with the national squad through the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Bustin was selected to the USA Field Hockey s Hall of Fame Class of 2014, the first group to be inducted since 2004. COLLEGIATE CAREER A 1990 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Bustin was a four-year letterwinner (1985-88), team captain, team MVP and All-Atlantic 10 honoree, in addition to garnering a first team All-America selection and Honda-Broderick Award nomination as female athlete of the year in 1988. UMass made the NCAA Tournament in each of her four years in Amherst and advanced to the national semifinals in 1987. In the spring of 2012, Bustin was inducted into the UMass Hall of Fame. 6 BUSTIN YEAR-BY-YEAR Overall Conference Year School Record Record 1997 Hofstra 9-9 3-5 1998 Louisville 1-19 0-10 (6th) 1999 Louisville 5-16 1-9 (6th) 2000 Louisville 14-8 5-5 (3rd) 2001 Louisville 16-5 7-3 (3rd) 2002 Louisville 13-8 7-3 (t-1st) 2003 Louisville 13-10 6-4 (2nd) 2004 Louisville 12-10 8-2 (t-1st) 2005 Louisville 14-7 3-2 (3rd) 2006 Louisville 12-8 5-1 (t-1st) 2007 Louisville 14-6 5-1 (t-1st) 2008 Louisville 14-7 5-1 (t-1st) 2009 Louisville 12-8 4-2 (3rd) 2010 Louisville 13-7 5-1 (2nd) 2011 Duke 14-8 2-3 (3rd) 2012 Duke 7-11 0-5 (6th) 2013 Duke 17-7 3-3 (5th) 2014 Duke 13-7 2-4 (7th) 2015 Duke 14-7 2-4 (5th) 2016 Duke 16-4 5-1 (1st) 2017 Duke 9-1 2-1 Totals 20 seasons 252-173 Hofstra 1 season 9-9 3-5 Louisville 13 seasons 153-119 61-44 Duke 6 seasons 90-45 16-21 Duke Total School W-L W-L Albany 0-0 1-0 American 1-0 2-0 App. State 0-0 4-2 Ball State 0-0 10-7 Bellarmine 0-0 1-0 Boston Coll. 6-1 6-1 Boston Univ. 5-0 6-3 Bucknell 0-0 1-0 California 4-0 6-2 Central Mich. 2-0 12-6 Colgate 0-0 0-1 Columbia 0-0 1-0 Connecticut 0-1 2-11 Dartmouth 0-0 2-0 Davidson 0-0 0-1 Delaware 2-1 3-4 Drexel 2-1 2-2 Fairfield 0-0 1-0 Georgetown 0-0 5-0 Holy Cross 0-0 0-1 Indiana 1-2 7-6 Iowa 0-0 5-4 James Madison 6-0 7-1 Kent State 1-0 8-9 LaSalle 0-0 1-0 Liberty 3-0 3-0 Longwood 4-0 4-0 Louisville 3-1 3-1 Maine 0-0 0-1 Maryland 5-5 5-6 UMass 1-0 2-0 Miami (Oh) 1-0 14-40 BUSTIN VS.
