It marked the secondstraight win for the Hurricanes over the Hokies and the thirdstraight meeting for the teams in postseason play with the Canes getting the best of the Hokies on their third attempt. After enjoying a first-round bye, the top-seeded Blue Devils defeated Virginia, 57-46, in Friday s quarterfinals. With Friday s win over Virginia Tech, Miami notched its second 20-win season in the last three years improving on its 19-13 mark one season ago, despite losing three starters, including two-time First Team All-ACC pick Jack McClinton. Miami has posted the tourney s top-two offensive performances with 83 points versus Wake Forest and 70 versus Virginia Tech. The winner of the Miami-Duke game advances to Sunday s ACC finals. THE SERIES Although Duke leads the all-time series versus Miami, 12-2, the last three meetings have all been decided by single digits including the 81-74 Blue Devil win on Feb. 17, 2010 in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes last defeated Duke, 96-95, on Feb. 20, 2008, at home and followed that up with a 78-75 overtime loss at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Feb. 7, 2009. In the team s lone meeting this season, Kyle Singler scored 22 points as No. 6 Duke rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Miami, 81-74. Jon Scheyer missed his first nine shots and Nolan Smith missed his first six for the Blue Devils, who shot 31 percent in the opening half to fall behind 37-25. But Duke outscored Miami 29-9 to start the second half and shot 9 for 15 from 3- point range after halftime. Despite their poor starts, Smith finished with 21 points for Duke, and Scheyer scored 15 despite shooting 3 for 15. Dwayne Collins had 21 points and nine rebounds for UM, and Durand Scott scored 19 points. Scheyer was 1 for 12 before sinking 3-pointers on consecutive possessions for a 64-59 lead with five minutes left. Smith's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run that put the Blue Devils up 69-59, and the margin was at least five the rest of the way. Duke went 9 for 10 from the free-throw line in the final 90 seconds to seal the win. Smith was shut out for the first 18 1/2 minutes. Scheyer struggled even longer, finally scoring 24 minutes into the game to pull Duke even at 39. Duke missed nine of its first 11 shots, and Miami scored 11 consecutive points eight by Collins for a 15-6 lead. Scott sank a runner at the buzzer to end the half to put the Hurricanes up 37-25, their largest lead of the game. Delaney missed two shots on the same possession with under a minute left and Virginia Tech (23-8) trailing by one. Scott hit two free throws at the other end, and Terrell Bell missed a tying 3-point attempt to end the Hokies' hopes. With the win, Miami improves to 6-0 on the year in neutral site games. The Hurricanes went 3-0 in November to win the Charleston Classic. Miami advances to the ACC Tournament semifinals for the first time in school history. It is the first time Miami has advanced to a conference tournament semifinal round since 2001-02, when the Hurricanes knocked off Georgetown, 84-76, in overtime to move on to the BIG EAST Conference semifinals.

With the victory, Miami posts its second 20-win season in the last three years. Miami s win marks just the second victory for a #12 seed against a #4 seed in the ACC Tournament. Since 1994, of the 482 teams seeded 10th or below in conference men s basketball tournaments around the country, Miami will be the 28th 10-seed or below to advance to a conference semifinal just the second 12-seed to do it in ACC history and the third ACC team seeded 10th or below. The Hurricanes out-rebounded the Hokies, 46-29, and earned a 24-12 advantage in bench scoring. Miami led on the boards 20 times this season, winning 16 of those contests. With a team-high 17 points, freshman Durand Scott scored in double figures for the 15th time this season, including in seven of the last eight games. He scored nine points in the final 2:42 including hitting all four free throw attempts during that span to help secure the win for the Hurricanes. Malcolm Grant (4-4) and Durand Scott (5-5) each finished perfect from the foul line on the day combining to knock down the game s final six free throws to ice the victory for the 12th-seeded Hurricanes. The Miami defense limited the Hokies to just two made field goals over the final 7:35 of the game. Despite missing Dwayne Collins in the post, Miami earned a 30-24 advantage in points in the paint against the Hokies. Miami has outscored all three opponents in points in the paint without Collins in the lineup. James Dews who grabbed a career-high nine boards suited up in his 129th career game, ranking second alltime in career appearances by a Hurricane. With an appearance in Saturday s semifinal, he can tie the school record of 130 career games played set by former teammate Brian Asbury last season. Adrian Thomas who leads the ACC in three-point field goal percentage has knocked down a three-pointer in 10 consecutive games for the third-longest active streak in the ACC. He finished 2-of-4 from long range versus Virginia Tech. For the first time in his career, DeQuan Jones posted back-to-back double-figure scoring games, finishing with 14 points on a career-high tying six field goals versus the Hokies to follow up a 14-point performance over Wake Forest. In addition, he was Miami s leading scorer in the first half for the second-straight game, turning in 11 points in the first stanza. SAY WHAT? Cyrus McGowan s three-pointer with 2:17 remaining in the first half helped Durand dur-ran UM erase a 10-point deficit, giving the Canes a 33-32 advantage. It was McGowan s sixth trey of the year, and his first since facing Virginia Tech (Jan. 31). Quigtar KWIG-tar Garrius GARY-us Reggie Johnson, who went 3-for-4 from the line, converted 14 straight free DeQuan duh-kwon throws before missing one in the second half. He has hit on 15 of his last 17 and 60 Haith rhymes with Faith of his last 72 free throws and is shooting 82.8 percent from the line this season versus ACC opponents best among the ACC s big men. He also grabbed a career-high Jorge George 12 boards and put up three blocks. 2009-10 HURRICANES NO. NAME POS HT WT CL HOMETOWN (LAST SCHOOL) 1 Durand Scott G 6-3 195 FR New York, N.Y.
