Brett Jackson's two-rbi single with one out in the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and proved to be the game-winner. Zach Jones had tied the game at 3-3 for the Cardinal with a three-run homer in the top of the seventh. 2007 Results: (Non-Conference at Stanford, March 2-4) Stanford 1-0, Stanford 5-4, Stanford 9-7; (Conference at California, April 20-22) California 3-0, Stanford 4-3, California 13-5 Stanford swept a non-conference home series betwen the clubs with a pair of one-run victories and a two-run win to complete the sweep that was also the 2500th in school history. Jeffrey Inman and David Stringer combined on a three-hit shutout in the opener, while Stanford scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning of the middle game to erase a one-run California lead. Two of the three conference games at California were also tight. Tyson Ross and Matt Gorgen combined on a five-hit shutout of the Cardinal in the opener before Stanford scored twice in the top of the seventh in a one-run victory in the middle game as Brian Juhl's clutch two-out single scored Adam Sorgi with the winning run. California scored eight runs in the bottom of the first and won the rubber game, 13-5. Current Game Win Streak: California 2 (April 22, 2007 March 4, 2008) Current Series Win Streak: California 1 (April 20-22, 2007) Current Season Series Win Streak: Stanford 1 (2007) Series Notes: Stanford and California will be playing for the 456th time in recorded history on Monday. Stanford has a 23-game advantage over the Golden Bears all-time but the teams have played nearly evenly over the last four seasons with Stanford holding a slim 10-9 lead. California won the opener this year after Stanford had won four of the six games played between the teams in 2007. The teams split six games in each of the two previous seasons in 2005 and 2006. Stanford had won an amazing 18 straight games against the Golden Bears from March 10, 2002 through the first game of a doubleheader on March 6, 2005, before California finally broke the skid against the Cardinal with a victory in the doubleheader nightcap. NOTES Stanford Back In Top 10 After Taking Two-Of-Three From No. 1 ASU - Stanford moved up three more spots to No. 10 in the latest Baseball America poll released on Monday, April 7, after taking two-of-three from No. 1 Arizona State at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond this past Friday-Sunday. The Cardinal dominated action on Saturday (12-2) and Sunday (10-2) after dropping a 6-4 heartbreaker in 10 innings Friday evening. Stanford is actually ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation by Rivals.com. Stanford is ranked No. 17 by Collegiate Baseball. New polls by USA Today/ESPN and the NCBWA have yet to be released. The victory moved Marquess into a tie for 10th on the all-time win list for NCAA Division I coaches. Marquess' current total (all at Stanford) also ranks him sixth among active coaches. His accomplishments were featured in an Associated Press article that ran on March 26. Stanford Wins Ninth Straight Series - Stanford extended its current string of regular season three-game series victories to nine by taking two-of-three against top-ranked Arizona State last Friday-Sunday. The current streak is Stanford's longest regular season three-game series win streak since the Cardinal won 15 straight regular season three-game series from May 3, 2003 - May 4, 2004. Avoiding Big Losing Streaks - Stanford has not lost more than two consecutive games all season. Stanford Perfect On Several Accounts - Stanford has yet to suffer a loss on the weekend with a perfect 10-0 mark as the Cardinal is 6-0 on Saturdays and 4-0 on Sundays. Stanford has also not lost in a rubber game (5-0), a three-game series finale (6-0), when ahead after eight frames (14-0) or in a one-run game (3-0). Home Advantage - Stanford has had a nice home field advantage at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond throughout the years. The facility has served as a host site for 13 NCAA Regionals, as well as NCAA Super Regionals on five occasions. Stanford has clinched 10 of its 15 trips to the CWS at Sunken Diamond. Stanford has had 43 consecutive winning seasons at home and recorded at least 17 home wins in each of its last 12 campaigns with an amazing 320-106 (.751) home mark over the last 12-plus seasons. Stanford has never had a losing season at Klein Field At Sunken Diamond in the school's recorded history. The Cardinal is off to an 11-6 start in its first 17 home games of 2008. Road Win Streak Snapped - Stanford had won four in a row away from Klein Field at Sunken Diamond before falling at Sacramento State, 5-3, in its most recent road game on March 25. Busy Schedule - Stanford is 12 games into a stretch where the Cardinal will play 29 contests over a 37-day period from March 21 - April 30 that includes five consecutive fivegame weeks. Starting Rotation Pitching Well - Stanford's three primary starters have pitched well in 2008. Jeremy Bleich (2-2, 1.38) equaled his win total in all of 2007 with victories in each of his first two outings of 2008. Although Bleich has suffered losses and a no decision in his last three starts, his ERA has actually gone down 81 points in those three starts as only one of the 12 runs scored against him was earned. Erik Davis (4-1, 4.46) struggled early but has been excellent in his last three starts, combining for a 3-0 record and a 2.52 ERA with two complete games and 23 strikeouts in 25.0 innings. Jeffrey Inman (4-0, 1.80, 30.0 IP, 18 SO) has given up just two runs in his last three starts with 18.1 frames, scattering 19 hits with 13 strikeouts over the stretch. Freshmen Making Their Mark - Stanford has had a total of 12 freshmen play over the first 24 games. Zach Jones (.263, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 4 SB) and Jake Schlander (.216, 11 RBI, 2 SB) have made the biggest impact among position players with Jones starting 21 of the last 22 games and Schlander starting all 24. Although Schlander has struggled offensively, he has made just two errors in the field in 97 defensive chances for a.979 fielding percentage as the team's shortstop. He has also raised his batting average 31 points in the last three games by 4-for-9 with a double and three RBI in those contests. Drew Storen (1-2, 3.72, 2 SV, 19.1 IP, 18 SO) has arguably been the team's top reliever and co-leads the team with two saves and nine appearances. Alex Pracher (0-1, 8.71, 1 SV, 10.1 IP, 10 SO) has equauled Storen's nine appearances, while Danny Sandbrink (0-0, 1.69, 10.2 IP, 3 SO) has also been effective. Fifth All-Time Winningest Program - Stanford is the fifth all-time winningest program in college baseball history with a record of 2533-1587-32 (.614) in 4152 games over 115- plus seasons. Stanford has won two College World Series titles in its 15 trips to Omaha and finished second on three other occasions. The Cardinal has added five NCAA Super Regional titles, 14 NCAA Regional crowns and 20 conference championships. Stringer Nearing All-Time Save List - David Stringer has 10 career saves and is now just one shy of tying Aaron Dorlarque (1989-92) for 10th place. Starting Strong - Stanford has outscored its opponents in the first inning this season, 32-8. Stanford Baseball (Champions 2 CWS, 5 Super Regional, 14 Regional, 20 Pac-10)

Stanford has recorded a 4.10 ERA that is 1.89 points better than the 6.01 the team recorded as the worst mark in school history in 2007. The Cardinal's.974 fielding percentage is 11 points ahead of last year's.963 and only.003 points shy of the school record.977, while the team's.305 batting average is also equal to last year's.305. Huge Roster And Pitching Staff - Stanford has 45 players on its 2008 roster with 23 of those listed as either a pitcher or a two-way player. Stanford may need a lot of depth, especially on the mound, in the first year of college baseball's condensed season as the Cardinal is still scheduled to play 56 regular season games in approximately three weeks less time than the club has in the past. Five Two-Way Players On The Roster - Stanford has five two-way players listed on the roster in Brendan Domaracki (OF/RHP), Michael Marshall (1B/RHP), Sean Ratliff (OF/ LHP), Drew Storen (RHP/3B) and Austin Yount (3B/RHP). Ratliff and Yount have both already contributed on the mound and at the plate. Domaracki has played but yet to pitch, while Storen and Marshall have both pitched but yet to play a position or hit. Sean Ratliff On Wallace Award Watch List - Sean Ratliff is currently on the Wallace Award Watch List for the honor given annually by the College Baseball Foundation to the top college player in the nation. Ratliff was a First Team All-Pac-10 choice in 2007 when he hit.339 with 12 HR and 45 RBI. He is on pace to produce similar even better numbers this season as he is hitting.337 with eight homers, 26 RBI and three stolen bases in his first 24 contests of 2008. Day And Night - Stanford has been much better this season in day games (12-3) than in night contests (3-6). Better Against The Best - Stanford has played better against the best teams in the country, going 8-3 against ranked squads (according to Baseball America at the time of the game) than unranked clubs as the Cardinal has posted just a 7-6 record against teams not in the Baseball America poll at the time of the game. The Cardinal is coming off a two-of-three series victory against Arizona State from April 4-6. Upcoming Games - stanford will play eight of its next 10 games and its next two Pac-10 series on the road after wrapping up an eight-game homestand with a three-game set versus Arizona State from April 4-6. Stanford starts the stretch with a single game at California on Monday, April 7 (2:30 pm, PT), before hosting UC Davis on Wednesday, April 9 (6 pm, PT). The Cardinal then has back-to-back Pac-10 road series at Oregon State (Friday-Sunday, April 11-13, 5 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT) and UCLA (Friday-Sunday, April 18-20, 6 pm, 2 pm, 1 pm, PT) sandwiched around a pair of non-conference home games against Santa Clara (Monday, April 14, 6 pm, PT) and San Francisco (Wednesday, April 16, 6 pm, PT). Stanford ends the current road run with a game at Santa Clara (Monday, April 21, 5 pm, PT) that will be televised live nationally by CSTV. Marquess has won more games than any coach in any sport ever at Stanford with the amazing numbers he has posted during his long tenure on The Farm. Marquess reached his most recent milestone on April 6, 2008, when he won his 1300th career game (all at Stanford) when the Cardinal defeated top-ranked Arizona State, 10-2, in a rubber game against the top-ranked Sun Devils. Marquess has a 1300-654-5 (.665) all-time record in 1959 career games, as well as equally impressive marks in postseason (112-52,.683), NCAA Regional (68-25,.731), NCAA Super Regional (10-4,.714), CWS (34-23,.596) and Pac-10 (514-344,.599) action. He is currently ranked sixth among all active NCAA Division I coaches in victories and tied for 10th on the all-time list among Division I coaches. Previous recent milestones included win No. 1000 with a victory over Florida State on February 9, 2001. Just over two years later, he picked up win No. 1100 versus Nevada on February 17, 2003. He became the 16th NCAA Division I head baseball coach to win 1200 collegiate games just over another two years after that when the Cardinal defeated California at Sunken Diamond on March 5, 2005. He also won his 100th career postseason game in Stanford's NCAA Super Regional clinching victory over Long Beach State (June 7, 2003). The 1969 Stanford graduate has led the Cardinal to two CWS titles and three runner-up showings in five CWS championship appearances, as well as 13 College World Series trips, five NCAA Super Regional titles, 14 NCAA Regional championships and 12 Pac-10 crowns (includes Southern Division and shared titles). Stanford's two CWS championships under Marquess came in back-to-back fashion in 1987 and 1988 as the Cardinal is just one of four teams to have ever won back-toback Division I College World Series titles. The three runner-up showings have all come this decade with the Cardinal taking second in Omaha in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Maybe even more amazing, all 13 teams that Marquess has taken to the College World Series have won at least one game. Stanford has qualified for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship 24 times in the first 30 seasons under Marquess with a current school record run of 13 straight appearances in postseason play. He has been named NCAA Coach of the Year three times and has received Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division Coach of the Year honors on nine occasions, most recently with his Pac-10 selection in 2003. The Cardinal has been at.500 or better in 30 of the first 31 campaigns under his leadership. His clubs have finished either first or second in the prestigious NCAA DIVISION I BASEBALL ALL-TIME COACHES WIN LIST Coach, Current or Last School (Yr.) Wins 1. Augie Garrido, Texas (40th) 1650 2. Stanford has had 139 players drafted by professional baseball in the past 23 campaigns, including 18 in the last 21 years that had players were either drafted in the first round or as a Compensation A pick. Stanford has had more first round picks (6) since 2000 than any other school in the nation, most recently with the selection of Greg Reynolds as the No. 2 overall pick in 2006. A member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Marquess was the head coach of the 1988 United States Olympic baseball team that captured the gold medal. He was also an accomplished football and baseball standout on The Farm, and is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame. He is one of only 10 people to have ever both played and coached in the College World Series. Marquess was the starting first baseman and a First Team All-American on Stanford's 1967 CWS squad and played four seasons in the minor leagues with the Chicago White Sox organization. STANFORD COACHING STAFF Dean Stotz is in his 32nd season with Stanford Baseball and his ninth as the team's associate head coach after he was promoted to the position prior to the 2000 season following 23 years of service as an assistant. Stotz currently coaches third base while also handling various offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Dave Nakama is also in his ninth campaign over two stints as an assistant, while Jeff Austin is in his first season as the team's pitching coach. 8 Stanford Baseball (Champions 2 CWS, 5 Super Regional, 14 Regional, 20 Pac-10)
