THE GAME The Trenton Thunder continue a nine-game road trip Monday with a doubleheader against the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field. The Thunder, losers of 4 of 6 on the current road trip, are in the midst of a stretch during which they will play only Portland or New Britain for three weeks (from 6/23-7/15) - Portland 12 times and New Britain 11. Trenton will play Portland 12 times in 17 days between 6/23 and 7/9. They snapped a three-game losing skid by pulling out a 6-3 victory in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon. This is the 5th of 7 series (4 home, 3 road) and the 17 th and 18 th of 25 games that will be played between the teams this season, the most for any Thunder opponent. Trenton has won 12 of the first 16 meetings. In game one, All-Star RHP Brett Marshall will get the start for Trenton, his 16th of the season. Marshall, who returned from the DL last Wednesday to earn a victory at New Britain, has pitched at least six innings in 11 straight starts. Entering 21012, he was rated by Baseball America as the 11 th -best prospect in the Yankees system. Marshall went 9-7 with a 3.78 ERA in 27 games at Tampa in 2011. The 22-year-old, who had Tommy John surgery in 2009, is in his fourth full pro season (5 th total) and has an overall record of 24-18 in 78 career outings (76 starts). Marshall pitched 6 shutout innings vs. Portland on 5/10. RHP Ryan Pope gets the ball in game two, his third start mixed in with 23 relief appearances. On June 23rd against Portland, Pope tossed 2.2 innings and allowed 3 R (1 ER) with 4 K. His two starts in June were his first in over two years (since 5/10/10), and the team is 2-0 in those outings. The righty has now made 65 career starts including 34 with the Thunder (32 from 09-10). Pope, who was selected in the third round of the 2007 draft from SCAD, is in his fourth straight season pitching for Trenton. THUNDER CLAPS... TRENTON THUNDER GAME NOTES Trenton Thunder (45-35, Yankees) at Portland Sea Dogs (34-47, Red Sox) Games 81 & 82 of 142 Monday July 2, 2012 6:00 PM Hadlock Field Portland, ME Gm. 1: RHP Brett Marshall (8-3, 3.09) vs. RHP Chris Martin (3-4, 4.25) Gm. 2: RHP Ryan Pope (3-5, 4.76) vs. RHP Jeremy Kehrt (2-1, 5.36) Radio: 91.3 FM (WTSR) & 1490 AM (WBCB) (Josh Maurer) Trenton: Home (22-18), Road (23-17) Portland: Home (19-18), Road (15-29) ANOTHER WEEKLY HONOR: LHP Vidal Nuño was named the EL Pitcher of the Week for 6/25-7/1. In two starts last week (each against Portland), Nuño went 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in 12.1 IP. His 12 strikeouts tied for the league lead. He became the fourth Trenton player to win a weekly honor this season, following Player of Week awards for Yadil Mujica (4/23-4/29) and Ronnier Mustelier (4/30-5/6) and Zoilo Almonte (6/11-6/17). MORE PLAYER LOSSES: With reliever Ricky Orta going on the shelf Monday, the Thunder have now had 24 in-season DL stints between a total of 19 different players. 20 of the 36 players on Trenton s current roster, including seven of the nine in the opening day line-up, have gone to the DL at some point. 14 of the team s 18 current position players have spent time on the DL in 2012, most recently Abraham Almonte going on last week. LATE-GAME HEADACHES: Trenton has lost four games on a walk-off hit in the past 2 1/2 weeks (including two of the last four games). Six of the team s 13 losses in June came with the opposing team scoring the winning run in its final at-bat. The Thunder bullpen converted only three of nine save opportunities in June (and the pen is 0-for-1 in save opportunities thus far in July). THIS AND THAT: The Thunder have gone 7-0 in seven-inning contests, and are 9-0 in games played as part of a doubleheader (including rain-suspended contests). Trenton is now 16-11 in one-run games, but have dropped four straight (including three on the current trip). They are 34-20 against RHP opposing starters, but only 11-15 against LHP starters (including 2-5 against LHP starters in the last eight days). HEY NOW : Six Thunder players have been named to the Eastern Division All-Star roster, although three are currently injured. Outfielders Cody Johnson (injured) and Abraham Almonte (injured), infielder Kevin Mahoney (injured) and pitchers Brett Marshall and Kelvin Perez were selected for the July 11 th contest in Reading. OF Melky Mesa was added to the team as an injury replacement on Saturday. ARMS RETURNING: Last week pitchers Craig Heyer and Brett Marshall returned from the DL. Heyer now joins the bullpen. Trenton still has three starers (Aribso, Stoneburner and Romanski) currently out of action. 40-MAN MADNESS: After the addition of pitcher Dellin Betances, the Thunder's roster now includes four players currently on the Yankees 40-man. Trenton also has OFs Zoilo Almonte and Melky Mesa and INF David Adams. The 40-man roster is composed of all those in an organization who are signed to a big-league contract. POWER PACKED : Trenton by far and away leads the EL in home runs, as the squad has hit 91 in the first 80 games of the season. The next closest team (Bowie) has 63. The Thunder have hit multiple homers in an inning 13 times, most recently in the fifth inning on June 23 rd (Z Almonte, Mesa & Murton). The team has hit back-toback HRs five times (4/7 (3 straight), 5/3, 5/5, 5/12, 6/23 (3 straight)). On 4/7 vs. New Hampshire, Trenton set a new franchise record with seven home runs in one game. BACK TO THE FUTURE: Trenton s Tony Franklin has been selected as a coach for the U.S. Team in the upcoming All-Star Futures Game in Kansas City on July 8th. It will be Franklin s fifth time coaching at the game. 2012 Thunder Monthly Report April: 11-12, May: 17-10, June: 15-13, July: 1-0 6/30 @ Portland L 4-3 7/1 @ Portland (DH-1) W 6-3 (11) 7/1 @ Portland (DH-2) Ppd 7/2 @ Portland (DH-1) 6:00 PM 7/2 @ Portland (DH-2) TBD 7/3 @ Portland 6:00 PM 7/4 vs. New Britain 7:05 PM 7/5 vs. New Britain 7:05 PM 7/6 vs. New Britain 7:05 PM 7/7 vs. Portland 7:05 PM 7/8 vs. Portland 1:05 PM 7/9 vs. Portland 12:05 PM 7/10-7/11 EL All-Star Break 7/12 @ New Britain 7:05 PM 7/13 @ New Britain 7:05 PM 7/14 @ New Britain 7:05 PM 7/15 @ New Britain 1:35 PM 7/16 @ Binghamton 6:35 PM 7/17 @ Binghamton 6:35 PM 7/18 @ Binghamton 1:05 PM 7/19 vs. Reading 7:05 PM 7/20 vs. Reading 7:05 PM 7/21 vs. Reading 7:05 PM 7/22 vs. Reading 1:05 PM 7/23 @ Portland 7:00 PM 7/24 @ Portland 7:00 PM 7/25 @ Portland 6:00 PM 7/26 vs. Harrisburg 7:05 PM 7/27 vs. Harrisburg (DH-1) 6:05 PM 7/27 vs. Harrisburg (DH-2) TBD 7/28 vs. Harrisburg 7:05 PM 7/29 vs. Harrisburg 5:05 PM 7/31 vs. Altoona 7:05 PM UPCOMING PROBABLE PITCHERS Date & Opponent Time Tue Jul 3 at Portland LHP Shaeffer Hall (6-6, 3.97) vs RHP Anthony Ranaudo (1-2, 6.23) 6:00 PM Wed Jul 4 vs. New Britain RHP Mikey O Brien (4-2, 4.17) vs LHP Logan Darnell (7-6, 4.50) 7:05 PM Thu Jul 5 vs. New Britain RHP Dellin Betances (0-0, 0.00) vs RHP B.J.
