COACHES WEARING PINS SATURDAY TO BRING AWARENESS TO AUTISM: Through the efforts of National Basketball Coaches Association members Tom Herrion, head coach at Marshall University and Pat Skerry, Towson University s head coach, the National Association of Basketball Coaches is proud to support the first Autism Awareness Day in college basketball on Saturday, Feb. 1. The Nevada and the Air Force coaching staffs will wear lapel pins on Saturday in support of Autism Speaks, an organization whose goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism now affects 1 in 88 American children, and is four to five times more common among boys than girls. It is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States, and costs affected families an estimated $60,000 annually. Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases. There is currently no medical detection or cure for autism. NIGHT OF THE 30 POINT GAME: At Fresno State, senior Deonte Burton and sophomore Cole Huff accomplished a feat that has not been achieved in at least in the last 14 years at Nevada as two Pack players scored 30 points in the same game. Both posted career-highs with Burton totaling 32 points and Huff 31. The 32 points is the top scoring game in MW play this season and the 31 by Huff is tied for the second highest game in conference play. It was Burton s third 30-point game as he had 31 at USF earlier this season and versus Washington his sophomore year. He made 14-of-20 shots, dished out five assists, blocked two shots, grabbed five rebounds and had four steals in a career-high 49 minutes. The 14 field goals made is a career-best and the 20 attempted tied his career-high. Burton also sent the game into overtime with his layup with 8 seconds to play to tie the game at 76. In his career night Huff made 11-of-19 shots including 6-of-10 three-pointers and had eight rebounds in a career-high 47 minutes. The six three pointers is tied for the most made in MW play this season and the second most in the conference this year. Huff set person highs for points (31), field goals made (11), field goals attempted (19), three-pointers made (6), three-pointers attempted (10) and minutes played (47). He also forced a second overtime period with a layup with 1 second to play in the first overtime to knot the score at 82. WOLF PACK TURNS UP THE DEFENSE IN MW PLAY: After allowing teams to score 80.1 points per game and shoot 48.3 percent from the field including 36.9 percent from behind the arc, Nevada turned it around once Mountain West play began. After eight MW games Nevada is second in the conference in field goal percentage defense allowing teams to shoot just 38.7 percent. The Pack is third in the conference allowing teams to shoot just 29 percent from behind the arc. Nevada leads the league averaging 6.3 blocks per game and totaled 12 at Fresno State which is the high in MW play this season. At UNLV the Pack had 10 blocks which is tied for the second best total in MW play this season. Opponents are scoring 65.5 points per game which is fourth best in MW play. BURTON LOGGING HEAVY MINUTES: Senior point guard Deonte Burton is second in the country averaging 38.8 minutes per game. At Fresno State he played a career-high 49 minutes of a possible 50 in the double overtime win. With the return of sophomore Marqueze Coleman, Burton has been able to get some rest and played a season-low 32 minutes at UNLV but delivered a game-high 29 points. Burton entered the UNLV game having played ever minute in a five-game stretch which included all 45 in the overtime game with Long Beach State. Going back to the 11:29 mark of the first half at Cal, Burton played 240 minutes and 22 seconds consecutively. The streak ended when he left the UNLV contest at the 13:09 mark of the first half. In a seven game stretch that started at UC Davis and ended versus Wyoming he played all but 82 seconds. In the UC Davis overtime contest on Dec. 7 he played all but 54 seconds. At Cal on Dec. 10 he received 28 seconds of rest. At Bakersfield he played all 40 minutes. EVANS RETURNS TO FORM: After a hot streak senior starting guard Jerry Evans, Jr. struggled the first four games of Mountain West play failing to score in double figures and was averaging 5.3 points and shooting 21.6 percent from the field. He made one of 16 three-point attempts. At UNLV he scored a season-low two points, making 1-of-12 field goals. Evans has bounced back the last four MW games scoring a team-high 17 versus Boise State, had 15 at Fresno State, 14 at Wyoming and 16 in the Colorado State game. In the last four contests he is averaging 15.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and is shooting 46.9 percent. His 13.4 points per game is second on the team and 19th in the MW. The 6.3 rebounds per game tops the squad and is 13th in the MW. Evans put together a career-high stretch of five consecutive double figure scoring games just prior to the start of MW play. In those five games Evans averaged 21.2 points and six rebounds while shooting 64.8 percent including 54.2 percent from behind the arc. He also made 85.2 per- 6

cent of his free throws. In eight MW games he is averaging 10.4 points and is shooting 36 percent from the field. He has made 9-of-34 three-point attempts. Despite the offensive struggles he ranks 15th in MW averaging 6.4 rebounds per game in conference play. Evans recorded his first career double-double with a team-high 21 points and a gamehigh 11 rebounds against Long beach State. The 6-8 guard is stepping up his game in his final season. Evans has played in 115 games during his career and made 96 starts. Always asked to slow down the opponents top scorer or rebound, he has increased his offensive game this season averaging 13.4 points per game. Last season he averaged 7.5 points per game and has a career average of 7.5. In 14-of-20 games played Evans has scored in double figures and four times scored 20 or more points. All four of his career games of 20 or more points came in a seven game stretch that started with 20 versus #19 UCLA and concluded with his 21 points at home against Long Beach State. At UC Davis he scored a career-high 25 points. He posted team-highs with 25 at UCD, 24 versus Omaha and 21 against LBSU. The 20 points against UCLA tied Deonte Burton for team-high honors. PEREZ ADDS OFFENSIVE PUNCH: Junior guard Michael Perez has added offensive punch to the Pack lineup this season averaging 11.7 points, 4.1 and 3.2 assists per game. Perez, a transfer from UTEP sat out last season under NCAA transfer rules. He has filled the spot at shooting guard after the graduation of three-year starter Malik Story from last year s squad. The 6-3 guard has scored in double figures in 13 games on the season and made a threepointer in every game but two, versus Utah State and Colorado State. Eight times in the last 12 games he scored in double figures. In addition to the ranking third on the team in scoring he is second dishing out 3.2 assists per game and tied for third in rebounding. At Fresno State he had a season-high seven assists and totaled six against CSU. Perez scored a season-high 18 points three times; at UNLV, vs. #19 UCLA and at Cal. From the field he shoots 38.7 percent and 33.3 percent from behind the arc. HUFF HAS BREAKOUT GAME: Sophomore forward Cole Huff s breakout offensive game came at Fresno State when he nearly doubled his previous career high with 31 points in a career-high 47 minutes. Huff also set career bests with field goals made (11), field goals attempted (19), three-pointers made (6) and three-pointers attempted (10). His previous high was 16 points which he accomplished twice the season. With 1 second to play in the first overtime his layup tied the game at 82 to force second overtime period. The 31 points is tied for second best individual scoring game in MW play to teammate Deonte Burton s 32 that also came in the FS game. The six three-pointers made is tied for the top outing in MW play and tied for the second most made in the MW this season. Huff is fourth on the team averaging 11.4 points per game and is second grabbing 5.4 rebounds per game. Starting all 21 games he has scored in double figures 11 times and six times led the Pack in rebounding. For the first time in his career he led the team with 16 points versus Utah State. The 16 points also is the only time this season Deonte Burton or Jerry Evans, Jr. did not top Nevada in scoring. Huff recorded his first career double-double and first of the season by a Pack player with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the Iona game. The 10 rebounds is a career high and he equaled it with 10 at San Jose State but fell two points short of a second double-double against the Spartans. In eight of the last 13 games he has scored in double figures, twice he had nine points and twice totaled eight. Twice he produced a career-long three consecutive double figure scoring games. 2013-14 Preseason MW Media Poll Rk. Team (1st-place votes) Points 1. New Mexico (23) 263 2. Evans has scored in double figures in 14-of-20 games played. All four of his career games of 20 or more points have come this season. In conference play he averages 10.4 points per game. Junior newcomer Michael Perez is third on the squad scoring 11.7 points per game. Perez has reached double figures 13 times on the season and scored a season-high 18 three times. In MW action he averages 10.6 points per game. The fourth player averaging double figures is sophomore forward Cole Huff who scores 11.4 points per game. Huff scored a career-high 31 points in the double overtime victory at Fresno State. In conference play he averages 13.5 points per game to rank 16th in MW play. WEST PROVIDING INSIDE PRESENCE: Junior forward AJ West has provided the Pack an inside presence defensively and offensively. The 6-9 shot blocker had eight at Fresno State which is the top outing by a Nevada player in 14 seasons. West also grabbed a team season-high 13 rebounds playing a season-high 38 minutes. The eight blocks is the top performance in MW play this season and tied for the top outing in the conference. In 10 games in the Silver & Blue, after being cleared by the NCAA to play, West is averaging 8.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 26.8 minutes per contest. West scored in double figures the first four MW games. In conference play he averages 9.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in 28.4 minutes per game with a shooting percentage of 56.6. The 3.0 blocks is tied for third in the MW and 8.5 rebounds is seventh. At home against Wyoming he recorded his first double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Three times he finished a rebound short of double-doubles with nine at SJSU, at UNLV and versus Colorado State. At UNLV he scored 11 points, had nine rebounds and blocked a five shots. He has a block in ever game except the home Wyoming game and two or more in six games. In his first game against Iona, West scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked a shot in 17 minutes. Against LBSU he made his first start in which he scored six points, had five rebounds and blocked three shots in 24 minutes. West averaged 10.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and 5.1 blocks his sophomore year at Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y. One piece of irony is that West s first game for the Pack came against another school from New Rochelle, N.Y. The Iona and Monroe College campuses are located 1.3 miles from each other. COLEMAN RETURNS: Sophomore guard Marqueze Coleman scored seven points on Wednesday versus Colorado State in just 13 minutes of aciton. The seven-point game came after he did not score for the first time this season in game at Wyoming. It was also his best offensive outing since returning from an eye injury that required surgery and caused him to miss five games. His return has allowed Deonte Burton to get needed rest. Burton played every minute in a five game stretch and just over 240 consecutive minutes played going back to the Cal game when Coleman was injured. Coleman is averaging 6.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game. He earned two starts early in the season and has scored in double figures four times including a career-high 15 against #19 UCLA. BURTON TWICE NAMED MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nevada senior guard Deonte Burton has twice been named MW Player of the Week this season and three times in his career. Burton was named Nov. 18 MW Player of the Week after averaging 26.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.5 steals as Nevada won a pair of road games, defeating Cal Poly (60-58) and San Francisco (92-90). 8

The most recent honor came on Jan. 13 when he averaged 21.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while leading Nevada to a 2-0 record in conference play. The Pack won 74-71 at UNLV and defeated Utah State 62-54 at home. His game-high 29 points at UNLV moved him past 1,800 career points at Nevada. CARTER PASSES JOHNSON: The victory at SJSU gave fifth-year head coach David Carter his 80th career win at Nevada which moved him past his mentor Trent Johnson (1999-04) for eighth most in school history. Carter is now 85-68 at Nevada and Johnson went 79-74 in his five seasons leading the Wolf Pack. Johnson brought Carter to Nevada as an assistant coach. Pat Foster (1993-99) is seventh with 90 wins. STEVENS, JR. OUT: Junior forward Ronnie Stevens, Jr. has missed the last 11 games after having surgery to repair a stress fracture. Stevens is expected to return but a date has not been set. He earned three starts and is averaging 4.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game. BURTON MR. CLUTCH: Nevada fans have come to expect senior guard Deonte Burton to come through down the stretch as he has done throughout his career. Against Wyoming Burton did it once again scoring the go ahead basket with 32 seconds to play to give the Pack a 59-58 lead over the Cowboys. A Wyoming shot with 4 seconds to go was no good and two free throws by Michael Perez sealed the victory. Burton s second game-winning shot of the season came versus Chattanooga on Nov. 22 as he hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Pack an 83-81 victory over the Mocs. He scored a gamehigh 28 points. Burton s heroics closed out the game at Cal Poly as he drove the lane and hit the bucket with 6.6 seconds to play to put the Pack up 59-58. He converted the free throw after being fouled and Nevada led 60-58. Burton was not done as he stole the ball and dunked it as the clock expired. The dunk did not count but put a cap on the comeback as Nevada scored the final six points after being down four with 17 seconds to play. His junior season he produced three game-winning shots in front of the home faithful. In the World Vision Classic with Nevada trailing CS Fullerton 77-75 on Nov. 16, he drove the lane, scored and converted the free throw after being fouled to put the Pack up 78-77 with 14 seconds to play. It was not all offensive as he blocked a potential game winning layup at the other end of the court then sealed the victory with two more free throws to give him the last five points in a 80-77 Pack victory. He delivered the next night against Green Bay hitting a game-winning three-pointer from deep behind the arc with 2 seconds on the clock to give the Pack the 71-69 victory over the Phoenix. This coming after GB had just gone ahead 69-68 on a three-pointer. Burton s three-pointer gave him exactly 1,000 career points in the Silver & Blue. Against UC Davis on Nov. 28, 2012 he hit a jumper in the lane with 3 seconds on the clock to give Nevada an 84-83 victory over the Aggies. He finished with a game-high 26 points. It started his sophomore year with a game-tying three-pointer to force overtime versus Washington. A game, the Pack would win 76-73 in overtime as he scored 8-of-10 points in the extra period. The first game-winning shot of his career was a three-pointer as a sophomore with 11 seconds on the clock at home against Utah State giving the Pack a 53-52 victory.
