Texas State has clinched the No. 1 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament and its first regular season title with a 14-1 record in league play and 20-8 record on the season. The teams lone SLC loss of the season came back on Jan. 26 to UTSA. Since the Bobcats have won nine straight games. Senior Joyce Ekworomadu leads the Bobcats and ranks second in the conference with 18.3 points a game, while reigning SLC Player of the Week Ashley Cole contributes 11.7 off the bench. Series History with the Bobcats... This will be the 51st meeting between the Mavericks and Bobcats. TXST leads 30-20 in the series, but UTA holds a slim 10-9 lead in games played at Texas Hall. The Mavs have won four of the last five meetings with the Bobcats. The Coaches... Samantha Morrow became the eighth head coach in UT Arlington women s basketball history in May. She has posted a 17-9 record in her first season coaching at the collegiate level after amassing a 413-77 (.843) record at the high school level. Suzanne Fox has posted a 145-165 record in 11 years as the Bobcats head coach. Looking Ahead... The Mavs will be heading to the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas. This years tournament will be played at the Merrell Center with the women s tournament beginning on Wednesday. March 12 and the men s action kicking off on Thursday, March 13. After establishing herself as one of the most successful high school basketball coaches in Texas, Morrow take over the reigns of a Maverick program which went 24-9 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time. Morrow s high school coaching career is legendary with an.843 winning percentage, a record of 413-77 over 14 seasons, four consecutive Class 5A girls state championships, 10 district titles, 13 playoff appearances and posting eight seasons of 30-or-more wins while the coach at Mansfield and Mansfield Summit High School. She led Mansfield High to four consecutive Class 5A state championships from 1999 to 2002. For her efforts, she was named the 2002 National Federation of High School (NFHS) Coaches Association s National Coach of the Year. Morrow continued her success when Mansfield was expanded to Summit, guiding the Lady Jaguars to the playoffs every year since the program s inception, including a berth in the state tournament last March.

Abanobi came into the game with 989 career points and it took a blocking foul in the final minute of the game to get her 11th point of the night. After scoring the first seven points of the game, UTA (17-9, 12-3) went on to build up a 33-8 lead over SFA in the opening 15 minutes of the first half. Senior Tiffeny Riles, who finished the day with 9 points and 10 rebounds, hit a jumper at the 3:34 mark to spark a 6-1 Maverick run to closeout the half up 39-14. UTA held SFA to a 5-for-32 (.156) first-half performance, while UTA connected on 16-of-31 shots in the opening half. The Mavs came out of the locker room and did not miss a beat extending their lead to as many as 40 points by connecting on 9-of-their-first-10 shots in the second half. UTA connected on 51.6 percent of their shots for the game compared to 26.9 percent for Stephen F. Austin and outscored the Ladyjacks 41-20 in the paint. UTA won the battle of the boards with a 55-34 margin with a big contribution coming from junior forward Erin Dixon with a career-high 16 rebounds. Four players scored in double figures for the Mavs led by freshman Tamara Simmons with 16, fellow freshman Shalyn Martin added 13 points and dished out a season-high seven assists in the win. ABANOBI JOINS 1,000 POINT CLUB Senior Maryann Abanobi scored her 1,000th career with 44 seconds left in the Mavs 77-49 win over SFA in their second-to-last game of the regular season. Only 13 other players have scored 1,000 plus points in their careers at UTA. Abanobi has become the 14th to join this exclusive list. Last years leading scorer, Terra Wallace leads the pack with 1,751 career points.

THREE-POINT STREAK REACHES 194 The Mavs have extended their consecutive game s streak with at least one three-pointer to 194 games when it connected on 8-of-19 triples against Stephen F. Austin. The last time UTA went without a threepoint field goal was Jan. 10, 2002 against McNeese State when the team went 0-for-11 from behind the arc. 500 IS SWEET UT Arlington women s basketball program captured its 500th all-time win on Jan. 26, 2008 with a 54-41 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Last seasons 24 wins marked an all-time high for the Mavericks and drove the teams all-time record to 490-493. ABANOBI NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT UT Arlington senior guard Maryann Abanobi was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 Women s Basketball First Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday, Feb. 7. She joins Sarah Pfeifer of Arkansas, Danielle Green of Oklahoma State, Ashley Paris of Oklahoma and Twiggy McIntyre from the University of Houston on the district six first team. Abanobi, who plans to go to medical school after graduation from UT Arlington in May, has a 3.51 grade-point average and is earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Chemistry. Abanobi is no stranger to academic honors, earning SLC Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2005-06 and 2006-07. Along with the five first-team members from each of the eight districts, Abanobi, is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration. MORROW SIGNS FIRST EVER COLLEGE RECRUIT UTA head coach Samantha Morrow has signed her first ever recruit as a college coach. Nicole Terral a 5 7 guard from Mansfield Timberview High School has signed a NLI to join the Mavericks for the 2008-09 season. HEART OF A CHAMPION Junior Candice Champion kicked off the 2007-08 season with back-to-back record games. In the Mavs season opener at Northern Arizona she led the Mavs by scoring a career-high 14 points and pulling in 6 rebounds. In UTA s home opener on Nov. 12, Champion led the Mavs yet again upping her career-best to 18 points and added a career-high five steals in the match-up with Pittsburg State. Champion s production came off the bench in both games. Champion recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Marshall on Dec. 18 at Texas Hall. Abanobi went 2-for-2 from beyond the arch on Nov. 29 at Texas for her 100th made 3-pointer to claim 6th place, and Players in UTA Career Record Book Maryann Abanobi 3-Point FGs Made...121 (4th) 3-Point FGs Attempted...376 (4th) went 2-for-5 against Marshall (Dec. 18) to move up to 5th on the list. Hitting 2-of-3 at Nicholls State (Jan. 17) she took over No. 4 from Dani Galbreath with 112 made. She currently has 121 3-point field goals made in her career. She has also moved into a tie for 4th place with Natasha Johnson for 3-point field goals attempted with 356 career attempts, after a pair of attempts on Jan.31 against Sam Houston State. She currently has 376 3-point attempts in her career. MAVS HAVE RECORD NIGHT AGAINST BEARKATS The win kept the Mavericks in first place in the Southland West Division and was the team s 22nd win in its last 23 conference games dating back to last year. The Bearkats, for the game, only grabbed 28 boards while UTA totaled 64 rebounds, five shy of the school record. The 54 UTA points at halftime is the fourth time in school history the women s basketball team has scored as many points in one half. NEWCOMERS SEE PLAYING TIME Freshmen Shalyn Martin and Tamara Simmons both saw action in the Mavericks exhibition games. And both true freshmen continue to see action as Martin has played and started in all regular season games and Simmons has started in all but one game this season. MANSFIELD REUNION The Mavericks new head coach Samantha Morrow comes to UTA after a very successful career as a girls high school basketball coach in the Mansfield ISD. But, Morrow is not alone, she is joined on her coaching staff and team by six Mansfield ISD products. Assistant coach Erin Grant and Director of Basketball Operations Ashley Purgason both played for Morrow at Mansfield High School when they won four consecutive Texas State Championships from 1998-2002. Morrow s other assistant coach Shane Laflin played boys basketball at Mansfield High School and graduated from there in 2000. Three players on this years squad also played for Morrow after she transitioned over to coach at Mansfield Summit High School when it was built in 2002. Sophomore LaTosha Duffey is reunited this season with former Summit teammates Shalyn Martin and Tamara Simmons, both are freshmen. ABANOBI NAMED SLC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR JAN. 2-7 UT Arlington guard Maryann Abanobi was named Southland Conference player of week after averaging 17 points a game and shooting over 50 percent from the floor in four games over the Christmas Holiday. Earning her first honor of the season, Abanobi led the Mavericks in scoring on the season with 15.9 points a game and extended her consecutive double-digit scoring steak to eight. Abanobi scored 26 points in a triple overtime loss to Marshall on Dec. 18 hitting 11-of-19 from floor and 2-of-5 from beyond the arch. In the Mavericks come from behind victory at Charlotte on Dec. 21, she secured the win scoring the final four points of the game. The senior remained tops in the SLC for free throw shooting hitting 11-of-13 from the line over the break.
