4 Taken Taken from PCAV November Newsletter 2007 Equestrian peak body representatives from PCAV, VAS Ltd, Horse Riding Clubs Association of Victoria and Equestrian Federation Australia met with Dr Roger Paskin, Principal Veterinary Officer Epidemiology and Samantha Forrest, Industry Liaison Officer with the DPI on 16 th November. The peak bodies were provided with an update of the current situation in NSW highlighting that things are looking positive in reducing and possibly of eradicating this virus from Australia in the future. Whilst Dr Paskin gave the peak bodies some confidence in returning to activities in the New Year, he informed the group that the Christmas holiday period could prove to be of higher risk, due to the large number of people travelling interstate to visit families for Christmas or take a vacation. Owners must remain vigilant with people moving onto their properties over this festive season. A gradual return to events during the start of the New Year was recommended with the size and number of events increasing as the risk continues to recede. The peak bodies along with the DPI are in the process of reviewing the bio security guidelines for holding equestrian events. The peak bodies envisage there will be some minor changes that will assist event organisers on the bio security side of things. However the contingency planning in the event that horses are required to remain at a venue will still be a major hurdle for many organisers. Despite the risk of shutdown being reduced it is something that organisers cannot afford to ignore. DPI anticipates that bio security measures and contingency plans will be with us well into 2008. The peak bodies have agreed that it is reasonable to facilitate a return of events in the New Year providing the present trends continue and Victoria remains EI free. The peak bodies will meet again on 13 th December to review preparations for the expected return of activities.
5 The Camp is on, the grounds are cut, the hay will be baled, the Christmas rally is on (without horses) the girls have done their K certificate exam (and passed) and it looks like things are starting to come good again in the world of pony clubs. Latrobe Group Annual Camp for 2008 will still be going ahead as planned. The Organising Committee will be reviewing the situation at their December meeting. All forms and payments should now be in. In the event that camp is cancelled or postponed due to the Equine Flu, even at the last minute, all monies received will be refunded in full. There will be working bees leading up to the camp and you will be notified of these as the dates are made. Please make every effort to attend. Remember that old saying... Many hands make light work! At this stage we are still looking good for our annual pilgrimage to pony club camp. As you can see from the spot to my left the camp is a goer at this stage. Please be aware that there will be notice sent out soon advising of the outcome of the December meeting and when the working bees will be held. I ask that every family attending the camp make themselves available to assist with the working bee. They re generally not overly hard work, more or less a bit of a tidy up of the area. Make sure you do take the fly repellent though. Those black budgies are mighty friendly. Our grounds have been cut and we will soon bale. An email will be sent out with the details shortly for those who wish to buy some bales. Congratulations to Emily Clifton and Kellie Armistead on their success with the K certificate exam. Good luck with the ride element and to those who will soon sit their C certificate. Thank you to Shelley Vidler, Mikayla Milbourne and Marnie Ellis for helping clean up the grounds prior to Spud Ellis coming in to cut it. Look forward to seeing everyone at the Xmas Rally. Merry Christmas and safe New Year to all. Giddy up, Andy. BIRTHDAY S Happy Birthday to Emily Clifton, Georgia Everett, Krystal Pattinson and Victoria Ludlow all celebrating their birthdays in December. Happy Birthday to all of you

As you would know due to the EI outbreak and the grounding of all horse movement in Victoria, we were not able to run the event on the scheduled date of November 11 th. The organising committee are looking at alternatives at the moment. These alternatives include a new date of February 17 th 2008, or cancelling it all together for 2007. The issue we have is that a terrific amount of sponsorship money has been pledged and if we don t run the event that money will have to be returned to our sponsors. The committee are looking at applying for Government Grants at the moment to try and offset the loss of funds. The other issue that has to be considered seriously is the why the gymkhana would be run as there would have to be strict bio-security measures adhered to. These security measures in themselves may be enough to cancel the event for the year. As soon as all the various avenues have been explored a decision will be made.
