GAME 1: Washburn 65, Rollins 42 LAS VEGAS, Nev. (November 8, 2013) Rollins was slow to get out of the gate and never got rolling as the Tars fell to Washburn 65-42 Friday at the Las Vegas Tip-off Classic. Chris Uhle led Rollins (0-1) with nine points, three rebounds and three blocks. Mitch Woods added six points and four rebounds with Scott Schuette and Jeff Dirkin each scoring five. Schuette also hauled in a team-high six rebounds. The Tars defense was stout to start, but it took nearly six minutes for the first field goal of the season as a Woods 3-pointer broke the streak and closed Rollins to within 9-4. A Schuette triple midway through the half closed Rollins to 15-9 before the Icabods rolled off a 12-3 run over the next five minutes and led 27-12. Adam Allen stopped the spurt with a layup, but the Tars again went cold and went into halftime down 37-20. In the second half, it took Rollins 9:26 to find its first field goal while Washburn pulled away to a 51-24 lead. The Tars then amped up the defensive pressure and took advantage of turnovers, cutting the deficit to 56-36 with 5:35 to play. That would be as close as Rollins would get the rest of the night as the Tars dropped their season opener for the second straight year. Rollins shot just 25 percent (13-of-52) from the field and 11 percent (3-of-26) from long range. Washburn hit 23-of-53 (43 percent), including 9-of-18 (50 percent) from beyond the arc. The Tars were outrebounded 44-33 and committed 22 turnovers while forcing 18. GAME 2: St. Marys 55, Rollins 54 LAS VEGAS, Nev. (November 9, 2013) Rollins was down 17 in the second half and nearly came all the way back, but fell 55-54 to St. Mary s (Texas) on Saturday, closing the Las Vegas Tip-off Classic. Mitch Woods led the way for the Tars (0-2), netting 12 points and gathering three rebounds. Alex Blessig added nine-points and four rebounds with Jeff Dirkin and Chris Uhle each chipping in seven points. Rollins had a much better start than in the opener the previous day, using a 7-0 spurt early in the half to lead 16-9, nine minutes in. The offense then went ice cold as the Rattlers came back and took a 27-18 advantage with 2:44 left in the half. Rollins was able to right the ship and closed to 30-25 at intermission. In the second, St. Mary s quickly jumped out to its largest lead of the night, 43-26, with 13:11 left. A Uhle 3-pointer at the 12:58 mark got the Tars going down the comeback trail as they crept back and made it a 53-50 spread after a Woods layup with 2:13 to play. The Rattlers added a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession, but a Blessig bucket, defensive stop, and Woods free throws pulled the Tars to within one, 55-54 with 48 ticks on the clock. The defense then came up big again as Rollins took possession with 22 seconds left. After a timeout, the Tars couldn t convert on a final play and left Vegas winless. The 0-2 start is Rollins first since the 1993-1994 season. GAME 3: Rollins 83, Palm Beach Atl. 61 WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 12, 2013) Rollins showed no symptoms of jet lag from a weekend trip to Las Vegas, beating Palm Beach Atlantic 83-61 Tuesday in the Tars home opener. Seniors Adam Allen and Mitch Woods were stellar for Rollins (1-2), who struggled to score points in the first two games of the season. Allen tied a career high, which was set against PBA last season, with 20 points. He shot 8-of-14 from the field and hit three from beyond the arc. Woods added 17 points and five assists behind a 5-of-6 night from 3-point range. Chris Uhle chipped in 11 points and six rebounds while Jeff Dirkin netted 10 points to go along with three blocks and two steals. Allen found his stroke early and helped push Rollins out to a 19-7 lead midway through the first. The Sailfish closed the gap to single digits later in the period before a Tars barrage of 3-pointers extended the advantage to 40-19 with 2:53 left in the half. Palm Beach Atlantic would then close the first on a 12-0 run and cut Rollins halftime lead to 40-31. The Tars allowed the Fish as close as seven early in the second, but back-to-back Woods 3-pointers again ballooned the lead to double-digits, 50-39 at the 15:50 mark. A put-back dunk by Lukas Winegarner five minutes later gave Rollins a 63-45 lead and sealed the game as PBA would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way. Rollins shot 51 percent (31-60) in the game and hit 15-of-33 from 3-point range. The Tars came into the game with a.303 shooting percentage over the first two games. PBA shot 20-of-50 (40 percent) from the field and outrebounded Rollins 33-32. The Sailfish also committed 17 turnovers to just 10 by the Tars. He was a key player on the first two Tar squads that made the NCAA tournament in 1974 and 1976. He is a member of the Rollins 1,000 point club with 1,006 career points. After his playing career, Klusman began coaching in 1978, assisting Bobby Marr at Winter Park High School, followed by three seasons at Rollins as an assistant under Mark Freidinger. He was named head coach in 1980 at the age of 26, the youngest in school history. In his first five years, he led Rollins to a combined record of 75-59 while instilling the program with his brand of basketball. In 1986-87, Klusman and the Tars posted a record of 21-8, the first 20-win season in school history. Also in that year, he became Rollins winningest coach, surpassing Boyd Coffie s 94 wins. In 1990, Klusman again led the team to new heights, posting a record of 20-8 and winning the program s first Sunshine State Conference title. The following year, the Tars again won the SSC, picked up the programs first conference tournament crown and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in more than a decade. The Tars again reached 20 wins in 1995-96 and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Tom Klusman Head Coach 34th Year Rollins College 76 In 2003-04, Klusman s squad set the Tars standard for success. That unforgettable team set school records in wins with a 27-6 record, and winning percentage, at.818. That team won the Sunshine State Conference for the second straight season, earned the sixth NCAA Division II playoff berth in Rollins history and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. These accomplishments earned Klusman SSC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season and for the fourth time in his career. He led the Tars to a school record-tying 27 victories, both SSC regular season and tournament titles and a trip to the championship game of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. During 2010-11, the Tars were once again the class of the SSC, winning the season and tournament championship and earning the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. Their record of 25-7 marked the third consecutive 20-win season. Klusman was named the SSC Coach of the Year during the season, for the sixth-time in his career. He also mentored possibly the best player to ever wear the Blue and Gold in guard Nick Wolf. Under Klusman s tutelage, the Cincinnati native was named All-America three times, twice the SSC Player of the Year and left Rollins as the only player to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Under Klusman, Rollins has been known for great shooting and tough defense. Klusman s teams are constantly among the conference and national leaders in one of three shooting categories. Rollins led the nation in three-point percentage during the 1990-91 season, when they made 278-of-585 of their shots from behind the arc for a blistering 47.5 percent. During the 1995-96 campaign, Rollins became the first team in the 20-year history of the Sunshine State Conference to lead the league in all three shooting categories. In the 2002-03 season, the Blue and Gold ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 59.8 points per contest. One of Klusman s all-time greatest marksmen, Daniel Parke, holds a record that stands on every level of the NCAA basketball. In Parke s four years at Rollins from 93-97, he hit at least one three-point field goal in 93 consecutive games. Klusman attended Finneytown High School in Cincinnati. Klusman received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration in 1976 and his MBA in 1978, both from Rollins. He is married to the former Jennifer Murray of Winter Park. They have a daughter, Maggie, and twin sons, Brian and Perry. Maggie attends Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., Brian is a student at Birmingham Southern and Perry stayed close to Winter Park and attends Rollins.
