AUSTRALIAN FORMULA JUNIOR ASSOCIATION Email: afja@iprimus.com.au www.australianformulajunior.com Executive Committee Chairman Ian Bailey 02 9411 4251 Secretary Kelvin Prior 03 9707 1652 Vic. Rep. Neil McCrudden 08 9364 7467 PITSTOP WINTER 2004 EDITION - NUMBER 27 The AFJA is endeavoring to arrange combined Formula Junior with Formula Ford events at major national historic meetings. It seems that Formula Ford are being squeezed by promoters wishing to cater for more entries by filling race grids to capacity, and we the AFJA are trying to establish FJ only events with insufficient numbers. FJ like FF have restrictive regulations with similar performance, and most owners would prefer to avoid being forced to compete with V8 Brabham's and GT sports cars in group or divisional events. From our discussions with FF group reps in Vic. And NSW it would seem that this proposal offers them the opportunity to remain apart from incompatible mixed grid events, and we gain the kudos that we seek in a safer environment. Past member Nick McDonald has agreed to update the AFJA Pictorial Promotional document conceived by him, namely, "Formula Junior in Australia." The current version will have information on 64 race ready cars available for major events in Australia, and when completed, the committee hopes to use these documents to promote Formula Junior in each Australian state. In recent years, AFJA member and NSW rep. Peter Johnson, has produced various items of apparel for members to help promote the AFJA. The latest additions to the range of garments is a sports cap, and just released an attractive poly/cotton polo shirt, both navy blue with embossed logo. These are available from Peter Phone (02) 9699 4372 KELVIN C. PRIOR SECRETARY/TREASURER AFJA

Doug Bradhurst has restored the car to original specs with modest engine for the present. TORQUE AROUND THE PITS The early FJ built by Stan Brown and driven by Alex Lazich called "Piranha" is currently owned and raced by Dennis Lesslie in NSW. The car is presently in its later guise, but Dennis hopes to return it back to FJ specs in the near future and be a part of the AFJA. Welcome Dennis.

In 1962 Frank Matich won the Australian Formula Junior Championship at Catalina Part Katoomba on 28th October in an Elfin. At the time he had in his possession cars 625 and 627. One an 1100 cc Formula Junior and the other a 1500 cc Formula Libre. After considerable research the current owner of car 625, Ed Holly, believes his car was originally fitted with 1500 cc engine even though it competed later in FJ events during the period. If Ed is correct in his assumption regarding which car won the championship in 1962, then car 627 owned by Charlie Mitchell in W.A. can now re appear as a Formula Junior and an important one at that. Had an email recently from England concerning the MRD Brabham BT1 owned by John Best. It appears there may have been more than one chassis frame built at the time, however, after some discussion it was agreed there was only one MRD built by Brabham in 1961. John is aware of his cars importance being the first Brabham built, and is currently restoring the car to its original specifications with the help of son Roy. "Work in Progress" The ex Charlie Chrichton/Stewart Cooper T59 Formula Junior being restored by current owner David Reid. 12 months ago AFJA member John Medley wrote me about an Australian built FJ in Qld. Doug Mason created the car with sleeved back Peugeot 203 engine and VW trans. It appears that John Holmes from Toowomba acquired it in 1987 in poor condition. The car is still in desperate need of serious attention, and John who recently retrieved the car from someone else's paddock, assures me the car will live again. How's this for a twist of fate. Mike Shearer the AFJA rep. For Sth. Australia and proud owner of the ex Tim Mayer Cooper T59 recently changed jobs, and now works for Cooper ales. Spoke with Colin Sullivan at Winton Historics about his Elfin Catalina that was damaged at Eastern Creek. It appears the car is in the assembly stage, and hopefully will be ready by years end.

Dick Willis (Ausper) informs us that the new engine for his car is producing the right quantity of HP, and will certainly improve his position on the grid. Whilst talking HP Don Thallon (Cooper T56) has extracted more performance from his BMC engine judging by how it was going at Winton Historics, and he assures us that there is more to come. Sadly, Peter Strauss (Brabham BT6) damaged his engine in private practice before Winton Historics, and we understand that FF guru, Peter Larner is rebuilding a new engine for the car. Heard a rumor recently regarding the Brabham 1 litre BT15 F3 car purchased by Ed Holly. It appears the car raced with a Lotus twin cam engine during its history, and whilst we would welcome the car in its current guise the alternative configuration would be more exciting to drive.
