Hiddenbrook Hurricanes Swim Team Wrap-Up Labor Day always brings the two surest signs that summer is over: the start of school and the closing of the pool. What seems like so long ago, at the end of July, the Hiddenbrook Hurricanes Swim Team completed another very successful season. After finishing 5-0 in division 12 in 2015, and winning Relay Carnival, we were moved up to division 9 last year, and again we went 5-0. After that success, the league moved us up another 3 divisions for this summer, to division 6. For the third consecutive year, the team finished with a 5-0 record, and won the division Relay Carnival again as well. We re all holding our breath to see where we end up next year! There were 13 new team records set this year, 6 individual and 7 relays. Bianca Gattoni set a new record for the 8u girls 25m back. Aidan Deege broke the 15-18 boys breast record. Noah Dyer set 2 new records, for the 11-12 boys 50m free and 50m fly. Lauren Blevins broke 3 records, 13-14 girls 50m free, 50m fly, and 100m individual medley. You can see all of these record breakers on our web site, at http://hiddenbrookswimteam.com/2017- record-breakers/ We had 6 kids qualify for NVSL All Stars this year: Harper Freeman, Brice Maxey, Bianca Gattoni, Noah Dyer, Lauren Blevins, and Sena Elston. To give some perspective to this accomplishment: There are 102 teams in the NVSL, with about 17,000 swimmers total. Fewer than 500 of them made it into the all-star meet this year. Congratulations to these great swimmers! Our successful season can be directly attributed to the depth of our team. Although we have some stand-out stars, we also have lots of kids in every age group who contribute. Including our Waterspouts program, this year we had 183 kids on the roster. Many of our swimmers, including our All Stars, started out in Waterspouts. We had lots of kids improve greatly throughout the season. We had lots of team spirit, and lots of fun social activities enjoyed by kids and parents alike. We may have added a couple of trophies to the case, but for me the real measure of success was that a fun time was had by all. I m already looking forward to next year! Marcel van Vierssen 3
Fairfax County schools are back in session. Please exercise caution while driving in the neighborhood and watch for students walking to/from school or bus stops. You can also help by trimming bushes that have grown into the sidewalks and low branches over the sidewalks. Be especially mindful at intersections and driveways where students may be crossing. Thank you for helping keep our students safe! When approaching a school bus with flashing red lights, drivers must stop in both directions, unless separated from the bus by a median. Here are the four simple rules: From www.fairfaxcounty.gov 4
