THE WRITE-UP How I Got Here. The AFM has always been about the camaraderie that can only be formed by weekends of elbow to elbow battles on the track. The friendly rivalries help to not only make us faster but ultimately better people. Every race weekend I walk around the paddock both when the track, tires, and emotions are hot as well as when everything - including the beer - has cooled down. Every weekend I see fierce competitors on the track helping each other in the pits. It could be something as simple as loaning a tool or as generous as repairing a rival s crashed bike so the battle can continue. The club has been a second family to me since I started hanging around back in 2007. I showed up on a Saturday to spectate with a group of friends I met on the Bay Area Riders Forum. I was not a track photographer back then and honestly had never heard of the AFM prior to that weekend. Sometime later that year I met Joe Salas of 4theriders fame and he let me hang around long enough to get hooked. I helped him take photos at the Sears Point rounds and he introduced me to some people that have become great friends. Eventually I, like baby birds every spring, had to spread my wings and fly. I started my own photography business in 2012, but it wasn t until 2013 that I became an associate member. I started to attend AFM board meetings that year and the extra time around the club combined with me doing more track days gave me the itch to go racing. I upgraded my associate membership to full racer status at round 7 of 2014 finishing not last in my first Clubman event. I am not sure exactly how it happened but after the season was over I accepted the nomination for the position of SF Chapter Director on the AFM BoRD. Surprisingly I won, and am now even more involved with the club that has provided more friendship, excitement, laughter, and memories than I could ever hope to return. For seven weekends a year I am transported to an alternate reality. One where everyone focuses all of their energy, most of their money, and all of their heart and soul on the same goal. Winning. Like baby birds every spring, I had to spread my wings and fly. The prize might be a plastic trophy, the number one plate, or simply a piece of paper with a personal best time on it. All are victories, but not everyone will walk away a winner. People crash, motorcycles break, and sometimes those times just don t fall. But still we come back. We work hard to repair our bikes, we strive to improve our times, and without any additional effort, we better ourselves.
