2016-17 GUSTAVUS MEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES SETTING THE SCENE The Gustavus men s basketball team is set for its second straight non-conference road game to start the 2016-17 season as it faces Simpson College on Nov. 26. The Gusties enter the game 0-1 after an 81-60 loss at Buena Vista on Nov. 18, while the Storm are 2-1 overall after most recently losing 67-59 to Waldorf on Nov. 21. Simpson started the season with wins over Monmouth (75-65) and Augsburg (95-71). THE SERIES Saturday s game marks the fifth meeting all-time between the Gusties and Storm on the hardwood. Gustavus is undefeated in the previous four meetings. The two teams faced each other last season on Nov. 21 in St. Peter as the Gusties claimed a 71-62 victory. In that game, the Gusties started the second half with the hot hand, going on a 19-6 run for their largest lead of the night at 53-33, propelling them to victory. ABOUT THE GUSTIES Head Coach Mark Hanson is in his 27th season at the helm of the Gustavus men s basketball team and his squad is looking to improve on an eighth place finish in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference a year ago when it went 9-11 in the league. Last season s team posted a 12-13 overall record, although Gustavus proved to be competitive while keeping a majority of games within single digits. The 2016-17 MIAC Preseason Coaches Poll ranked Gustavus seventh. Hanson strives for a style of play that is team oriented, pass first, with a cohesive offense that is hardworking and aggressive along with tough defense. The Gusties enter the 2016-17 season with big shoes to fill. Returners Riley Sharbono (So., Marshall, Minn.), Peter Kruize (Sr., Saint Peter, Minn.), along with senior captains Coleman Sweeney (Sr., Lake City, Minn.) and Alec Koster (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.), will be setting the expectations for this season. Koster, a senior wing, returns as the Gusties most experienced starter. Koster played in 22 games and started in 10 last season, averaging 2.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Last season, Koster ended with a 42.3 shooting percentage from the floor and shot 35.5 percent from the three-point line. Sharbono returns to the lineup after averaging 18.2 minutes a game last season, which is the most among returners. Sharbono played in all 25 games and averaged 7.5 points per game. In his rookie campaign Sharbono shot 41.9 percent from the field and tallied 188 points. Down on post, Kruize returns for his fourth season on the varsity roster. Kruize played all 25 games last season, averaging 6.8 points per game. The local Saint Peter product had the second highest shooting percentage on the team at 52.2 percent and posted an 87.1 free throw percentage. Other players returning from last year s team include Charlie Krambeer (So., Rushford, Minn.), Benjamin Lies (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.), AJ Hatchett (Jr., Powder Springs, Ga.), and Schuyler Thompson (Jr., Milville, Minn.). The large graduating class of 2016 made room for newcomers on the roster. Newcomers this season include Austin Goetz (Jr., Chaska, Minn.), Vannis Smith (Fy. Crystal Lake, Ill.), Spencer Tollefson (So., New Richland, Minn.), Jason Faul (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and transfer Kelsey Thomas (Jr., Wiesbanden, Germany). LAST TIME OUT The Gusties lost their season opener 81-60 at Buena Vista on Nov. 18. The Gusties kept the score close for most of the second half, but an 11-point run by the Beavers in the final three minutes sealed the victory for the home team. Gustavus was limited to a 31.4 shooting percentage from the floor, while Buena Vista shot 56.1 percent. Alec Koster led the Gusties with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting along with six rebounds, while Riley Sharbono added 11 points. Kelsey Thomas hauled in seven rebounds to lead the team. 2016-17 SEASON BY THE NUMBERS Largest Victory Largest Defeat 21; 81-60 @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Largest Halftime Lead Largest Halftime Deficit 10; 44-34 @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Most Points In Game 60; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Fewest Points In Game 60; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Most Points Allowed In Game 81; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Fewest Points Allowed In Game 81; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Highest FG % In Game 31.4%; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Lowest FG % In Game 31.4%; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Highest Opp. FG% In Game 56.1%; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Lowest Opp. FG% In Game 56.1%; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Most Points In First Half 34; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Most Points In Second Half 26; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Fewest Points In First Half 34; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Fewest Points In Second Half 26; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Most Points Allowed In First Half 44; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Most Points Allowed In Second Half 37; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Fewest Points Allowed In First Half 44; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Fewest Points Allowed In Second Half 37; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Highest FG% In A Half 40.0%; 1st @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Lowest FG% In A Half 22.9%; 2nd @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Largest Lead 1; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Largest Lead On Road 1; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Largest Lead At Home Largest Blown Lead - Loss 1; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Largest Deficit 21; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Largest Deficit On Road 21; @ Buena Vista (11/18/16) Largest Deficit At Home Largest Comeback (trail in 2nd half)

HEAD COACH MARK HANSON Mark Hanson is in his 27th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men s basketball program for the 2016-17 season. During his time as head coach, Hanson has directed his teams to 11 NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances, including reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history and placing second in the nation during the 2002-03 season. In the 2010-11 season, Hanson earned his 400th career victory with an 89-78 win over Saint Mary s on Gus Young Court. He became the 65th coach in NCAA Division III history, and 31st active coach, to reach the 400-win milestone. Research indicated that Hanson was the 14th fastest coach to reach 400 victories in Division III history, and became just the sixth coach from the MIAC to reach the 400-win plateau. Hanson, who has compiled a 480-230 overall record at Gustavus prior to the 2016-17 season, including a 362-159 record in the MIAC, has won seven MIAC Championships, and has been named MIAC Coach of the Year eight times. He has helped guide Gustavus to the MIAC Playoffs 21 times, reaching the finals 14 years and winning the MIAC Playoff Championship on seven occasions. His teams have reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament six times and the Elite Eight three times. Hanson has coached 30 players who have garnered 50 All-Conference honors, four MIAC Players of the Year, eight players who have received 13 all-region honors, and three All-Americans. In addition, Hanson has coached two Jostens Award Finalists (Trevor Wittwer, 2008; Marc Newell, 1999), which recognizes the top Division III men s basketball player in the nation based on academics, athletics, and community involvement.
