Camera! Action! The peak of Santa Monica tennis action will take place this September at our annual Club Championships taking place over the weekends of September 10 & 11 and 17 & 18. (Please make yourself available on all four days in order to participate in the tournament.) This is the Club s most exciting tournament of the year with players competing in FIVE events: Men s and Women s Singles, Men s and Women s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. This is everyone s chance to test their mettle, challenge past winners (or defend winning positions, as the case may be) at the most competitive tournament the Club offers. All events will be single elimination, best of three sets. Trophies will be awarded to all champions and runners-up. This is a members-only event. Players are welcome to enter more than one event, but must be prepared to play back-to-back matches if they do. For the first time in SMTC history, we re giving a price break for players entering more than one event. The entry fee for playing in one event is $25 per person; each additional event is only $15 each. This covers court time, balls, trophies and the ever-climactic after party which follows the final matches. Whether you play or not (or get eliminated in early rounds), please come watch the exciting final matches on Sunday, September 18th. Non-playing members and/or guests are welcome to attend the party for $10. Because of the complexity of preparing the draw for this event, entries must be received no later than August 28th. Simply send the enclosed entry form, along with your entry fee made payable to SMTC, to Elizabeth Dorzback, 1417 18th St., #6, Santa Monica, CA 90404. Many volunteers are needed to run the show, so please check the willing to volunteer box on the entry form if you are available. Get the word out - tell everyone you see to sign up NOW for the Club Championships, so that this year s event will be the most competitive and grandest of them all! See you on the courts! Halloween Interclub With Elaine s Tennis & Travel Group Mark your calendars because on Sunday, October 30th, Elaine is planning a ghoulish tennis round robin event in the afternoon (costumes required) at courts located in Studio City. Stay in costume and enjoy a catered party at Elaine s home in Tarzana following the matches. Details and entry form in next month s newsletter. Get Set for Casa Via Mar! Join us for a tennis weekend September 30 - October 2, 2005 at Casa Via Mar in Port Hueneme, south of Oxnard at the ocean. SMTC has been going to this cozy, hour-away resort for several years now, and it has become one of the favorite weekend trips. The reasonable cost for the entire package is only $115 per person for double occupancy, $189 for single occupancy. This low price, combined with the pleasant and efficient service, makes it an affordable and relaxing weekend retreat. The price includes a room for two nights, a cocktail party both Friday and Saturday nights, complimentary snacks, sodas breakfast both Saturday and Sunday mornings, lunch on Saturday, plus unlimited use of the swimming pool, jacuzzi, and movie library (there are VCRs in every room). On Saturday night, guests are on their own with various groups sampling some of the nearby eateries. Somewhere in between all this eating and drinking, tennis will be scheduled on both Saturday and Sunday. Players who arrive early Friday afternoon usually get in some open tennis. Sign up early as space is limited. We will try to match you with a roommate if you need one. Send the enclosed entry form, a check payable to SMTC, and a stamped, self-addressed #10 envelope to SMTC c/o Jutta Ruehl, 625 Midvale Ave., #4, Los Angeles, CA 90024. Malibu Racquet Club Interclub - Saturday, July 23rd - Cancelled Unfortunately, the interclub was cancelled due to the Malibu club being only able to field four teams. Thank you to all SMTC members who signed up for the event. Hopefully, the tradition can be continued next summer. In the meantime, mark your calendars for our upcoming interclub on Sunday, October 30th. Member Bulletin Board Male 4.5 looking for daytime weekday tennis. Singles, doubles, hitting, or drills. Hi All: I teach tennis to kids with severe disabilities at three high schools in the South Central Area: Locke HS, Jordan HS, and the new South East High School. These kids love tennis...and if you have used tennis balls, or racquets, please save them for the kids. I am trying to expose students with special needs to lifelong leisure activities. I will also be introducing them to golf this year...so if you have any golf equipment, please pass it our way. Thank you. - Marie Lafayette, Adapted Physical Education Specialist for LAUSD. Strangers Become Friends in the Heat of the Night We played a dynamic and faster-moving tournament in our last Friday night matches July 15th. It was again a kingof-the-hill format but we used no-add scoring and changed courts and partners after every seven games, with the hope that we would finish more rounds and not worry about tie-breaks. Fortunately there were some standby players because two players were late and two players left early. We were able to keep four courts full for the whole evening. Harry Weiss was the victim of bad timing - he started at Court 1 and was able to stay there the whole evening until he finally lost. However, just after that I announced it was the last round and he didn t have time to get back and claim the prize. Ted Malek and Katherine Spetner were the tournament winners. Afterwards a few of us went to El Cholo to cool down. - Bruce Schelden Spring Singles Round Robin 2005 Results Thank you to all participants for signing up for the first singles round robin. After 8 weeks of hard fought competition. The winners were: Men 4.5: Phil Flexo Men 4.0: Richard Levik Women 4.0: Nancy Greep Congratulations to you and a gift certificate to one of the sporting goods shop was sent as your reward for the hard work. Attention Members -- please notice the member list insert included with this newsletter. This lists all members who have joined since the 2005 membership handbook was printed. Please cut it out and staple it into your handbook for your reference. 2005 SMTC Board of Directors THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER BRING TEAM TENNIS TO SANTA MONICA Summer just isn t the same without Santa Monica Tennis Club s exciting Team Tennis Tournament. Held last Sunday, August 21st, eight teams (4 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon) competed against one another in a friendly rivalry for first place. Each team consisted of two men and two women, playing mixed doubles, ladies doubles and men s doubles against all the other teams. Accumulated scores were tallied up and announced after each round, causing the lead to shift from one team to another throughout the session. This made for a very exciting - and highly competitive - day of tennis for all players, resulting in the winners prevailing by a very close margin. Here are the results: In the morning session, the winning team with a total of 47 games was The Reedesigners made up of Cyrus Namini, Marguerite Jorgensen and her guests Pam Blakis and Marty Brickel. They narrowly (but decisively) won over The Mighty Mites team (Carol Reston, Laurie Drake, Joe Hanania and Anoosh Askari) which had a total of 45 games. Ironically enough, the teams playing in the afternoon session had almost the exact same scores! The winning team was The Raucous Rackets made up of Randy Chow, Candace Tysdal, Sherry Harrison and Bruce Schelden with 48 total games won, just edging out -- by one game -- last year s winners, The Dukes of SMTC (Stephen Olson, Ron Elmer, Linda Martin and Elizabeth Dorzback), who fought hard to defend their title. The members of each winning team received trophies, made of crystal this year, which players commented added a stunning touch of class to the event. In keeping with tradition, a prize was given, a prize was given to the team which had the most creative team name. Coincidentally, this prize (a new can of tennis balls to each member of the team) also went to The Reedesigners and Raucous Rackets, thus making both teams double winners. Thanks go to Ron Elmer, Marguerite Jorgensen and Gwendolyn Coleman, each of whom put in a full day s work to assist the tournament director Elizabeth Dorzback, who once again put on an action-packed, well-organized event. Thanks to all the players for contributing their positive enthusiasm both on and off the court, making for a great day of tennis for all. See you next year! Longtime readers of this space will recall Rick s adventures in Antarctica. But there is no truth to the rumor that he auditioned for a role in March of the Penguins. Those of you playing the summer round robin may be discovering that you can beat some of the people on these ladders. Why deny yourself glory (and a heck of a good time)? Challenge someone! 4
