Again this year we decided to feed our Iowa Angus Bull Test Bulls at Werner Feed Efficiency Center. We did this so you as a buyer could get more information on the bulls that will be selling. Below is a short explanation of data that is listed on page 10 in the catalog. The Werner's will be in attendance sale day to help answer any questions pertaining to feed efficiency. Thanks again to Joe, Clint & Jim Werner as well as Bonnie Larson for all there help this year! First, we would like to thank the Iowa Angus Association for testing their bulls at our facility this year. It has been an honor to work with such dedicated producers and such great people. After testing cattle for feed intake for over ten years, the data has become second nature to us. However, it is relatively new in the seedstock industry and we would like to take this opportunity to explain the data. Terms used in evaluating feed intake data are: Residual Feed Intake (RFI), Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), Dry Matter Intake (DMI), and Feed:Gain (F:G). The number that does the best job defining feed efficiency in our opinion is Feed:Gain (F:G). And more precisely, Adjusted F:G which accounts for the size of the cattle in the pen. The Adjusted F:G number tells you how many pounds of dry-matter feed the animal had to eat to gain one pound. For example, if the animal s Adj. F:G is 5.0, that animal ate 5 pounds of feed to gain one pound. A lower Adj. F:G is desirable as the less an animal has to eat to gain a pound the better. (The industry average F:G for cattle is around 6.) We then take Adj. F:G one step further by figuring each animal s Cost of Gain (COG.) To figure COG, we multiply the average cost of feed during the test by the Adjusted Feed to Gain (Adj F:G). And this is where the data really hits home to me. The spreads we see within a pen of cattle are amazing. It is very common for the most efficient animal in the pen to cost half as much to feed as the least efficient bull in the pen. The fact that feed efficiency is a moderately heritable trait shows the importance for testing. We can make strides in the industry by identifying and selecting for efficient cattle.
