2012-2013 Women s Softball Head Coach~Matt Houseman Matt Houseman is coaching his seventh season of Jayhawk softball. He has taken a program that struggled in the past and transformed it into a league power. When Coach Houseman took over at MCC his goal was to compete for a National Title within five years and he surpassed that goal by winning a National Championship in 2010, just his fourth year in charge. Under Coach Houseman s direction the team also won its first state and regional title in 2010. In 2011, the Jayhawks again were cochampions of the MCCAA West Division before bowing out with a third place finish in the regional. In 2012, the Jayhawks again won the state and regional titles to earn a trip to Clinton, MS for the NJCAA World Series where placed a respectable 6th in the nation. Matt has had the opportunity to coach 9 NFCA or NJCAA All- Americans and two student athlete of the year award winners at MCC. When asked how the program has reached the championship level, Coach Houseman answered we operate as a family and really work on life issues and the softball comes with that. Don t get me wrong We try to outwork every other program in the country; our kids bust it every single day. They work extremely hard in the classroom, on the field and in the community to give Jayhawk softball a good name! Asked about his staff, Coach Houseman stated I get to work with my best friends that have a huge passion for our kids and the game of softball. There is no way we would be where we are without Colleen, Ryan and Kelsey! The coaching staff was named the NFCA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2010 & 2012. They were also honored to except the NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2010! Coach Houseman is a graduate of Muskegon Catholic Central. He played baseball at and also at Olivet College. He has coached baseball at Muskegon Catholic Central, and Muskegon Orchard View. Matt also helped his wife Heidi with the Muskegon High School softball team prior to being hired again at MCC. Coach Houseman is also on several committees for the NFCA and currently holds a seat on the board of directors for the NFCA. He is co-owner of Michigan Blue Chip Softball Camps and he has taken a position at Extra Innings where he is director of operations. Matt is supported at home by his best friend and wife, Heidi, and their four children; Jacob, Emma, Megan, and Mattie. They make their home in North Muskegon and are members of Fellowship Reformed Church.

2012-2013 Women s Softball Assistant Coach~Ryan Schalk Coach Schalk is starting his fifth season with the Jayhawks and his first as the Assistant Coach. He works primarily with the infielders and bunter/ slappers while coordinating multiple fundraisers for the team. Ryan has worked with both boys and girls of all age groups as a basketball, baseball and softball coach. For the past four summers Ryan has organized and run the Lakeshore Summer Softball Camp at. He also previously organized a basketball camp at Oakridge High School. This past year, he became the Director of Fast Pitch Softball at Softball World in Muskegon. He started a fall fast pitch league for middle school and high school ages this past year and will be expanding on that this year including running an 18 and up fast pitch league. He is also an instructor for Michigan Blue Chip Softball Camps which is a camp business that runs college exposure camps throughout the state of Michigan. Ryan graduated from Oakridge High School in 2005 where he played basketball and baseball for four years. His baseball career was highlighted by advancing to the State Semi-Finals in 2004. His Senior year he earned various honors including all conference, all district, and all area as an infielder. Ryan was nominated as the Male Athlete of the year for the Muskegon Sports Hall of Fame as well as Showcase Athlete of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year at Oakridge High School. He was also Academic All Conference in basketball and graduated 8th in his class. Ryan attended where he received his Associates degree in Science and Arts in 2008. He currently attends Grand Valley State University where he is pursuing a degree in education.

2012-2013 Women s Softball Assistant Coach~Kelsey Bandstra Coach Bandstra is starting her second season coaching with the Jayhawks after previously playing for two years for Coach Houseman. She was part of the 2010 National Championship Team, and in 2011 the team finished as Co-Conference Champions. Her responsibilities this year are working with pitchers and helping the team in any other way. She also is a pitching instructor at Extra Innings where she trains pitchers of all ages. Kelsey graduated from Rogers High School in 2009 where she played softball and bowled for four years. Her Junior year her softball team finished Runners- Up in the State Tournament. She was named First Team All Conference for 3 years, and First Team All State her Junior and Senior year. Her bowling team made it to state all 4 years for team event and individuals. Every year her team finished in the top 8, and she individually finished in the top 10. After high school Kelsey played on a Big- League World Series Team in 2010. Her team went on to win the World Series beating the Philippines 14-4. Kelsey currently attends finishing up her associates degree, and plans to attend Davenport University to study Sports Management.

2012-2013 Women s Softball Assistant Coach~Colleen Morse Coach Morse is in her second stint with the Jayhawk softball program. Previously she served as both the assistant coach and as the head coach. She got her start in coaching at Oakridge High School, where she had the opportunity to coach JV softball. She has also been a volunteer with the Athletic Department for many years. Colleen has been employed at Muskegon Community College for 32 years. She is a graduate of Oakridge High School where she excelled at basketball and track for four years. She has played recreation softball for over 30 years and has been a part of a number of teams that have competed and won state championships both in women s softball and co-ed softball. She is married to Rick and has one son, Ryan Schalk, who is a student at GVSU.

2012-2013 Women s Softball Assistant Coach~Maygan Copenhaver Maygan Copenhaver is enjoying her second season of being a part of the Jayhawk coaching staff. Her primary focus is working with pitchers. Maygan has worked many summers helping with camps and training younger generation of softball players. She also coached one season of JV softball at Shelby. Maygan graduated from Shelby High School in 2007 where she played basketball, volleyball, and softball throughout her high school career. Maygan was recognized as a three year varsity softball player, and she was recognized with various honors throughout her time on the field as both a pitcher and middle infielder. She was first team all-conference, all-district, all-area, and all-region as an at-large player. During her time at Shelby she broke records for most perfect games pitched in a season as well as strike outs. She was twice voted by her teammates as an MVP. Maygan received a softball scholarship to play for Matt Houseman at where she was a part of the team for the 2008 & 2009 seasons. During her time at Muskegon she helped her team to both a regional and state qualification. Maygan received her Associates Degree in Health Science in 2010 and is currently attending Baker College to further her education.
