Memory Games! You are sitting on your horse in the marshalling area, you ve groomed him until he shines, you ve dusted off your boots, picked the bits of lint off your chaps, double checked your tack you are ready until your mind goes blank! You are about to enter the ring for your pattern class, and you can t remember what comes first. It s one of the biggest fears people have about showing, but with practise, you can overcome it. Here are some tips to help improve your pattern memory: 1. If you get the chance to walk the pattern, take it. Walking through the pattern at least once will help to imprint the path in your memory. 2. Use visualization techniques. Find a quiet place to close your eyes and imagine yourself going through the pattern. Try to make your images as detailed as you can. Studies have shown that the mind can t distinguish between vividly imagined images and the real thing! 3. Break the pattern down into small pieces. It s easier to remember individual small parts than the whole thing. You can even make a copy of the pattern and colour code each section to help jog your memory. 4. If you make a mistake, forget it and move on. There is always another show! Carla Wennberg, an AQHA judge and former director of reining for the US Equestrian Team says, If you blow your pattern, forget it. Don t crucify your horse for any mistakes. Every time you school and scare your horse, you take away from the trust you need in the show pen. Remember to stay calm and breathe. Your memory works better when you are relaxed.
