President s PERSPECTIVE By Molly Fine It s that time of year: Time to recruit new board members! Each year in October we hold elections for current board members who are coming up for reelection, as well as new board members to replace those who are giving up their positions. A board term is two years, and this year there are two positions up for re-election: President, and Vice President of Dressage. There are also several board positions opening that either have not yet been filled, or the individual currently in that position is stepping down. Board positions require attendance at 11 to 12 board meetings per year. Two of these meetings are face-to-face, while the remaining are conference calls. Most board members are involved in organizing and running the year-end banquet each year, in addition to other activities during the year. Minimum time requirements amount to about one to two hours each month, with approximately 10 hours spent on a project during the course of a year. You must be a member of the year before becoming a board member. If you are interested in becoming part of this leadership team, please let me know. You can reach me at 716-573-5390 or Mollymfine@gmail.com. On another note: I recently returned to the competition dressage arena after many years absence. What a thrill! I have been preparing for several months (actually, well over a year) and it all came together in the past several weekends. I competed at Lamplight at the end of July in the sweltering heat, and this past weekend at Silverwood, in much more pleasant weather. My goal was to earn my Silver medal scores, which I managed to do. I wore a Shadbelly for the first time in my life, and the entire experience was all that I had hoped for. My goals in these last two competitions were to stay on and in the ring for the entire test, and I m happy to report that I met and exceeded them! This past weekend, I actually remembered both tests, and only made a few mistakes. At Lamplight, I had forgotten the 4th level test, even with a reader kind of embarrassing! Oh well, life goes on. This show season has been a great experience on so many levels and I have a lot of people to thank: My trainer, Andi Patzwald, who has been supportive throughout, as well as our groom, Chito, whose help was indispensable. To Lisa Cannata and Lisa Froehlig at Silverwood, thank you so much for ensuring my place in your show after I messed up the entry. But the thing that surprised me most was the encouragement from the other riders, both young and old. Thank you, all! My reason for relating this experience is to encourage those that have not yet made the leap into competition in the first place, or who may have given it up: Reconsider showing again. I found it to be a thrill and great fun. It doesn t matter how old you are, it s still a rush! Get out there and try it. My next goal is to compete at Regionals we ll see how that goes. Until then, thank you all for your encouragement. The center is designed to help horses recovering from surgeries and injuries to heal more quickly and successfully. Ms. Wysocki earned her degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Colorado School of Mines and has worked as an engineer for fifteen years prior to returning her focus to riding and training of dressage horses. She has competed several horses to the FEI levels, winning many regional and local championships through Grand Prix level including her USDF Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. She has also successfully competed in the CDI arena with multiple horses. Kristi is a USEF licensed S Dressage Judge, R Dressage Sport Horse Judge and an FEI 3* PARA Dressage Judge. Her students have also competed successfully through the Grand Prix Level. Several students also have their bronze, silver, and/or gold medals. She has judged many USDF Regional Championships and Breeder Series Finals including Dressage at Devon, NEDA, CDS Region 7 Lamplight Region 3 and the new Global Dressage in Florida. She serves as the USDF Sport Horse Committee chair, is a member of the USDF Sport Horse Seminal Faculty, the USEF Dressage Committee, the USEF PARA Equestrian FEI PARA Equestrian FEI and National Affiliates Committee, and has been a member of the United States PARA Dressage Selection Committee. She takes a unique perspective when teaching, using both her engineering background and sport horse expertise to help her students understand the horse bio-mechanically. This can often simplify the concept for the rider and make it easier for them to understand and attempt the task at hand. She tries to help her students understand what is happening bio-mechanically so they in turn can communicate with the horse with more logical, clarified aids. Grant Program The Board of Directors has updated our Grant Program for our membership. We are very excited about this program and hope that more members begin sending in applications for upcoming clinics, whether, USEA, USDF or USEF sanctioned. As always, the funds must be used for tuition only. members can qualify every two years. To qualify for a grant, clinics must be with trainers from greater than 100 miles from the Chicagoland area. The clinics must be produced by, USEA, USDF, USEF or must be an approved clinic. In return, asks that the recipient of the grant write a detailed article about the clinic for the next issue of the Scribe. The article should be a minimum of one typed page and may include photographs (please provide photographer credit). Other qualifications are as follows: An applicant must be a member in good standing of for a minimum of six months at the time the clinic is to be held. An application and copy of the clinic entry must be submitted a minimum of 60 days prior to the opening date of the clinic. This will allow the Board of Directors enough time to review and vote on the applicant's request at the next board meeting. One grant per clinic may be awarded. Not every qualified clinic will be awarded a grant. The two main factors that will be considered when awarding grants are the following: volunteer hours totaling a minimum of 5 in the past calendar year and each applicant s past riding experience without regard for number of shows entered or success in the show ring. The amount funded by per clinic is $200, or the cost of the clinic tuition, whichever is less. The grant funds may only be used for the clinic the applicant anticipates participating in as a rider, and not an auditor. Funds may not be used for stabling, hauling or other associated expenses, other than the cost of the clinic tuition. Grant funding may vary each year depending on the amount available and number of qualified applicants, and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Funds not used in a given year will be rolled over to the next year. In cases where the grant recipient does not participate in the requested clinic or an article is not submitted within a month of participating in the clinic, the funds granted shall be returned to immediately. This will allow the money to be used for another applicant. All grant applicants will be notified of the decision by phone or email after the board has voted. Checks will be mailed to the applicant only after the Scribe article has been received. September 2016 Page 24
