Griz Basketball Notes Page 6 Coach Wayne Tinkle Quotes: ON UND GAME: It s another league game first of all, but there was some excitement there when they beat us last year and they talked about beating a premier program in the Big Sky. Coach Jones has done a nice job there, and they have some talented players and play a nice system. We are looking forward to going there. We know it s going to be a chore. They are coming off a road split. I know they took one on the chin at Weber (a 95-63 loss), but Weber seems to be doing that to a lot of people. It s going to be a real challenge. The travel there is difficult. But, we are excited to be back on the road in conference and playing again. ON NC GAME: They ve got a lot of talent. I picked them in the top three or four. It s young talent, but the (Derrick) Barden kid is averaging dang near a doubledouble (10.9/7.3). They ve got some pieces to the puzzle, and they are still trying to develop and jell. What we re going to hope for is to go out and have a successful road trip and develop some momentum, because when we come back (to Missoula) we have a nice little home stand. (UM s next four games after this road trip are all in Dahlberg Arena). So, it s a big trip for us. We ve had some really good ball games down to the wire in Greeley, and we ll expect nothing different this time. We did have the two early road wins (at NAU and at Sac State), which I think will bode well for us on this trip. We know what went into those two victories. Then we have a nice little four-game stretch at home. It s still too early to cause a ton of seperation (in the league race), but we certainly can build some momentum for the second half of conference, which will be here before we know it. ON THE GRIZ SO FAR THIS SEASON: Our team has really changed from week-to-week with some of the injuries and illnesses that we ve had. Will s been back, but today Jordan Gregory takes one (was injured) on the knee, and we don t know what his outlook is going to be. We ve got illness right now, with Hutch (junior center Eric Hutchison), who was not on the floor today because of an illness. It seems like this year we ve had to deal with a lot of adversity. But the one thing that we haven t done is really get freaked out about it. We ve continued to roll with the punches. If we don t have certain guys on game night, we ll come with some other guys and ask them to step up. That s kind of become the MO of this team. No matter who is thrown out there, they are expected to do the job. I think if we can hang in there, and stay resilient, it s going to make us tougher for the stretch run later in the year.

Played for Pump N Run AAU team in Spokane. Time/Score A RECAP OF UM S LAST TWO GAMES: At Montana 81, EWU Eagles 66 : Jordan Gregory and Spencer Coleman combined for 32 points to lead the Griz. The closest the Eagles got in the final half was when they cut the Grizzlies lead to five points (47-42) with 14:13 left to play, on a three-pointer by senior forward Collin Chiverton. But, the Grizzlies broke the game open after Chiverton s trey, out-scoring the Eagles 17-3 over the next six-plus minutes, and when guard Keron DeShields nailed a three-pointer with 7:43 left to play, and Montana took a commanding 64-45 lead. After that the Griz led by at least 14 points the rest of the way. Jordan scored a career-high 17 points, while Coleman tallied 15. DeShields and Mike Weisner added 9 points each, while senior guard Will Cherry scored 8 all from the line. Talented freshman forward Venky Jois led EWU with 16 points and a game-high 7 rebounds, while Chiverton scored 15, and Reuter chipped in 14. The Eagles were missing their leading scorer (14.7 ppg), junior guard Justin Crosgile, who reportedly had recently quit the team. Both teams went to the line a lot and were very efficient there, as the Griz made 28-of-34 (82.4%) charity shots, and the Eagles made 20-of-24 (83.3%). Montana was 25-of-29 (86.2%) from the line in the second half (EWU was 7-of-10). The Griz out-rebounded the Eagles 31-28, and out-boarded them 21-11 in the second stanza. Montana had just 5 turnovers (EWU had 11) in the game. At Montana 62, PSU Vikings 55: UM s Big Three combined for 41 points as the Griz remained undefeated (4-0) in Big Sky play. Cherry, junior guard-forward Kareem Jamar, and senior forward Mathias Ward, Montana s three returning starters from its 27-5 and league championship team from a year ago, tallied 16, 14, and 11 points to lead the way for the Griz. It looked like the Griz had the game in hand early in the second half, as when Ward nailed a threepointer he gave Montana a 17-point lead (40-23) its largest of the game with 16:35 remaining in the game. The Vikings whittled the Grizzlies lead down to just six points with 1:01 to go, but Cherry converted two free throws in a one-and-one situation, and Gregory had two -one-and-one opportunities in the late going, and he made all four of his attempts to thwart PSU s comeback bid. Gregory and DeShields added 6 points each for the Griz, while Jamar pulled down a team-high 7 rebounds, and Ward and Gregory had 6 caroms each. Junior forward Aaron Moore led PSU with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Grizzlies, who entered the game ranked seventh in the nation in free throw percentage, were 18- of-20 (90.0%) from the line (PSU was 11-of-16 for 68.8%). Montana made 11-of-12 (91.7%) charity shots in the second half. The Vikings out-rebounded the Griz 34-30.
