In our house my family is already planning back to school activities and related obligations. These required deadlines remind us that August provides an excellent time to enjoy the pool, tennis courts, golf course and dining at the BBC. While I love fall at the club, summer at BBC usually provides a somewhat slower, more relaxed pace. We have been fortunate to be in the midst of enjoying another season with amazing facilities and outstanding conditions. The weather, unfortunately has interrupted more days on the courts and course than anyone would have liked. Our incredible membership seems to be as pleased as ever with the club and I love hearing all of the positive comments about our staff and campus. As we seek to continue to enhance the experience for all of our members, we are taking a balanced approach to club improvements. The Board of Trustees has been steadily refining the plans that we shared at the Annual Meeting in which we conveyed steps to address dining, tennis and golf priorities. Thank you for the support of our excellent management and dedicated staff and do not hesitate to reach out to me, or any member of the Board of Trustees, to share your thoughts and ideas. GOLF AND GREEN COMMITTEE WHY AERIFY WHEN THE GREENS ARE PERFECT? The short answer is the fact that they are healthy and are vigorously growing, which makes it the best me for healing. The sooner the pu ng surface is back to championship condi ons the be er for all involved. We are now catching an unusual weather pa ern for this me of year and we will fully take advantage of it. The long answer is golfer expecta ons for how fast a green should roll, no ma er the environmental factors, puts the grass plant at a disadvantage without the proper maintenance program. That program can be compared to a world class athlete. We provide them with a complex diet of all the necessary nutrients to handle mowing heights of a tenth of an inch or less. So why cul vate/aerate? The USGA website has numerous ar cles to explain in depth as to why aerate under Serving The game Course Care. Adam Mueler, BBC s consultant and USGA Agronomist, has a few good ones. h p://www.usga.org/content/usga/home page/course care/ forethegolfer/why do golf courses aerate so much.html The greens aera on just completed on Monday July 30 and Tuesday July 31 was completed using a 3/8 coring ne with 1 1/2" spacing and 2 1/2" depth. The coring is followed by sand topdressing, brushing, and soil spray with micro and macro nutrients. The moist soil should facilitate healing and expected healing me is 10 14 days with reasonable weather. This same process done in the early spring and can take 3 4 weeks to heal over, depending on weather. Soil temperature, whether it s too low or high, can make all the difference in the world as to when the turf will heal. Soil temperatures too high (80+) would have the same healing me as soil temperatures in the 40 s. The Golf and Green Commi ee & David Walsh GCS Core aeration is critical to turf's health and performance. Aerating when grass is at peak health will encourage quick recovery and minimize playing surface disruption.
