UNIVERSITY BLUES DOWN MONASH Melbourne High Lose Third in Row o Leaders Beaten By GEORGE McTAGGART Monash University lost their chance of slipping into the four last Saturday when they went down to University Blues in a low-scoring game. Ormond kicked three goals against the wind in the last quarter and beat Melbourne High by 26 points. It was High's third successive defeat but they held their place in the four as a result of M,anash's defeat. Geelong went furhher ahead in B Section where there are now four teams equal second - Old Scotch, St. Bernard's, University Blacks and North Old Boys. Two leaders, Fairfield and Power House Reserves, were beaten and eleven other teams in the four suffered defeat, while another could manage only a draw. The wind played havoc with the Monash-Blues game. Monash opened with two quick goals and led by 4 points at half-time. Blues crept up to level the scores at the final change and added 3 goals in the last quarter to take the points. Melbourne High's defence did well to hold Ormond when they had the wind in the first and third quarters. Ormond led by 2 points at the interval and were 31 points in front at three-quarter-time. It was by no means an impossible task for High but they failed to finish on. Old Paradians gave Coburg quite some trouble for three quarters and led by 4 goals at three-quarter-time but Coburg kicked 7-8 to one point in the last term and won by 25 points. A 7-goal burst in the second quarter carried Ivanhoe to a 2-goal lead over Collegians at half-time, but Collegians recovered in the second half and their defence held Ivanhoe out in the last quarter to win by a single point. This win lifted Collegians off the bottom of the list to eighth and pushed Ivanhoe down into the relegation zone. But the two teams to go down will probably not be finally decided until the last home-and-home round next week. Caulfield Grammar looked to have De La Salle's measure when they led by 4 goals at half-time but "De La" hit back after the interval and Caulfield scored by only 17 points. University Blacks gave Geelong some anxious moments, leading by 20 points at the interval but Geelong emerged clear winners by that same margin. North Old Boys beat Old Xaverians by only 9 points and St. Bernard's accounted for Kew by 20 points. Old Scotch were much too strong for Footscray Tech. and moved up to second place while Commonwealth Bank, with 12 goals in the second term, made themselves safe from relegation with a big win over Alphington. St. Kilda CBC` kept in the running for the four with a sound win over Assumption (second), the margin being 38 points. Old Melburnians sneaked home by 5 points from Old Haileybury who are now only fourth on percentage from O.M.'s and St. Kilda. Uni. High overwhelmed Hampton Rovers and Old Carey scored a big win over Power House, while Tooronga-Malvern beat National Bank by 8 points. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-AUGUST 8, 1970 Page 3

Old Geelong dented AMP Society's final four hopes when they won by 22 points, and St. Kevin's, with a big win over Glenhuntly, are still in the running being only a game outside the four. Leaders, Fairfield, went down by 10 points to West Brunswick, and now hold top place only on percentage from Old Trinity. Parkside (secund) can blame poor shooting for goal for being able to manage only a draw with Old Brighton. Old Trinity beat St. Pat's by 2 goals in a high-scoring game - 19-12 to 17-12. Brunswick crushed State Savings Bank by more than 9 goals to push Bank out of the four, their place being taken by Old Camberwell who scored by 21 points from ANZ Bank. Dookie and Longerenong surprised Old Mentonians and won a low-sccring encounter by 17 points, and in another low-scorer, Reservoir Old Boys beat La Trobe University by 9 points. In the Juniors, Ormond crushed Old Scotch to the tune of 19 goals and University beat Ivanhoe by nearly as much. Melbourne High finished well to score comfortably over Old Paradians. Army Apprentices suffered their first defeat on the field when they went under to Old Brighton by 9 points. Elsternwick were the unlucky side -they kicked 20-14 (134 points) and were beaten by a point, as West Brunswick kicked 19-21 (135). Notable results among the Reserves were the Blues' 11-point win over Monash, Old Scotch's comfortable win (4 goals) over Footscray Tech., and Power House's 17-point defeat by Old Carey. Reservoir Old Boys beat La Trobe by 13 points and Brunswick beat State Savings Bank by 16 points, The Monash backline stood up well under great pressure last Saturday, Tim Collie, Stuart Galbraith and John Kelly turned Blues out well all day, using intelligent football in co-operating with the half back line of Phil Knight, John North and Rod Lane. Well done fellas! Keep it up! It is good to see Jeff Brown back in action for Ivanhoe after many weeks out with an ankle injury. Brownie is a man of few words, but on the football field his actions speak for themselves. DUTIES OF RUNNERS The duty of an Official Runner is to carry messages from the coach to players and NOT to engage in altercations with players. The runner, in carrying such messages, must take the shortest possible route to the player concerned, and leave the field immediately after delivering the message. MPIRE'S CQ 1960 WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR Because in that season we gained the services of the following sportsmen who in 1970 become life members of the Umpires' Association. We offer them our congratulations. Leo Bohan (taxation officer), commenced his sporting career as a player with V.F.L. team Hawthorn, where he played League football in 1949-50-51. After 6 years' umpiring in the C.Y.M.S. competition, Leo transferred to the V.A.F.A. and quickly reached A Section. For personal reasons he decided a few seasons ago to umpire only in Reserve Sections, where his undoubted ability and knowledge of the game is greatly appreciated. Dc,n Brown (school teacher), is another footballer turned umpire, transferring from Caulfield Grammarians to Hawthorn in the V.F.L. He umpired in the V.F.A. as boundary and then field umpire, and after 5 seasons Don came over to the top Association in 1960. A family man, Don has a 40-mile return trip twice weekly to training, shows a good turn of speed over 440 yards. David Doherty (Accountant), came to us 10 years ago from the V.F.L. Reserves. He is one of our quiet men, doesn't say much, but is always ready and willing to help. An A Section umpire, David has been to Perth for the past 6 weeks. With a wife and family of 4, we don't know how he got a leave pass. Bill Mason (Senior Constable in Police Force). One of our fittest whistle blowers, Bill has the unique distinction of winning the fairest and best medal when playing with Ivanhoe Juniors. Unique! Because he only played 6 games. Also had 3 seasons with V.F.L. side North Melbourne, but owing to recurring injury became an umpire. After 3 years he got itchy feet and played with Nagambie where he won the Club President's Trophy and was also runner-up in the League best and fairest award. Now a top A Section umpire, Bill is also Vice-president of the Umpires' Association. Spends his spare time looking after a lovely wife and two budding young footballers. Norman Sharpe (Sales Manager). Another of our very fit men, is also Secretary of the Umpires' Association. Norm spent 5 years as a player with former V.A.F.A. club Murrumbeena, also played country style with Mansfield. A pretty good player he was coached by Bill McGrory (win: ner of 4 V.A.F.A. fairest and best awards) and also by Keith McKenzie, present North Melbourne mentor. A very fastidious dresser, Norm is always immaculate on and off the field. He is full of personality and is very popular with umpires and players. Ron Saunder (Computer Specialist), is a former Ormond and East Malvern player. Another of our quiet men, Ron was a member of Ormond's only A Section premiership team which won the flag in 1950. As a player with Ivanhoe Juniors in 1948 and 1949 Ron kicked 88 goals in one season, including 15 in one game, in a year when that team was premiers and champions. Father of two girls and two boys he plays cricket with Waverley where he shines as a spin bowler. "Yes 1960 was a very good year." Congratulations to Greg Wade playing his first game for St. Bernard's Reserve grade team last week, who continued his fine form from the juniors and looks to be a star for the top side in the future. If some of the older players in both reserves and senior side show the same determination and dedication as the new young players 1970 could be the most successful in the club's history. BALL BRIEFS Bad luck for Monash when Pete Lamb and Chris Cole sustained bad injuries last Saturday. Both were playing brilliantly until late in the third quarter. Chris broke his thumb, and early in the last quarter Pete's ankle collapsed under him and he went off on a stretcher. With Sam's threat of doing the statistics looming like the sword of Damocles, I know that you'll be back in the very near future, even if it means using only one leg and one hand! Hope your recovery is speedy! Paul Peasnell and Bog Spurling were once again the backbone of North Old Boys win against Old Xaverians last week. They created many oppa:tunities, and capitalised on many others, coming from players such as Lucio Rovis and "Dooza" Athurson who gave great drive from their respective wing positions. People are still debating the distance of the kick by George Howard for Commonwealth Bank last Saturday. This scribe says 65 yards, Steak and Kid said 70, some players said 80, and one drunk said 120. George believes the drunk! Congratulations to Russ McPhee and Roger Gamble of Old Carey on playing 50 games for the club. Roger will be on the sidelines for a week or so with an old injury. Russell is having a good year and is proving a very serviceable ruckman. Those who saw the Power House game will long remember the great mark he took over the pack. It was a pity it wasn't televised. Keep it up Russ. Power House were sorry to see the departure of Ron Stapleton last week. Ron. who has been with the club for three seasons, has moved to Sydney to take up the position of Sales Supervisor with Campbell's Soups. Ron was vice-captain this year and has played over 40 games with the club. Best wishes for the future from all at Power House. O.M.'s Firsts won a "cliffhanger" to keep their final four chances alive. Peter "Pizza" Woodbridge hit form at the right time in the back pocket, Rob Thompson likewise hit his straps in the centre and Russel Weir put in his best performance for the year, winning kicks all around the ground while roving. Coach Dick Hallo playing his 50th game for the club dominated the ruck duels. Bruce Niemann once again played well at full-forward, his constructive play providing many opportunities for others around him. Gary Austin continued his good form at centre half-back, his timely marks thwarting many attacks. Congratulations to Old Haileyburians' Barry Gartner who plays his 50th game today. Barry is a great clubman who always gives 100 minutes each Saturday. U.H.S. Sall Briefs - continued It was good to have a win for a change, and Tooronga-Malvern nearly kicked their chances away with a long string of points. Noel Graham showed the benefit of a training run and took the opposition apart, including that great one handed mark on the boundary. Gordon Jones, Ian Cameron and Alan Cockerel played well, and Ross Wilson gained a yard with his hair cut! Not one bad player and 99.5 minutes of determination and concentration saw St. Kilda CBOC advance to the edge of the four with a win over the third top side we have played in the last few weeks. To mention any player would not do justice to the other seventeen. Suffice to say that the same application for the next two weeks should see us into the finals, from where we will be return to "B" grade. Assumption missing the focal points of its attack in Dyer and Tuck, and bamboozled by the windy conditions, were very poor imitations of the previous week's great side. The only notable occurrences being the fine game played by Des "Jesse" James, who got more kicks than the back of the milking stall on a cold morning, and the fact that half the goals were kicked by players more accustomed to the backline. Now that Kevin Bristntiv has ruined the theory that he can't kick goals, this title may have to pass to a certain rover who hasn't "dobbed" one for more weeks than he would like to admit. Collegians v. Ivanhoe, what a finish to remember with time ticking away and with either side a straight kick from victory and possible relegation, at long last it was over with Collegians in front by a point. Our best (although it was a team effort) came from Phil Pryor, Wes Roach, who spearheaded the attack at full forward (4 goals), Daryl Tucker, Rick Read (who gave an exhibition of high marking), Rob (the Rock) Webster, and Chris Roach. Who was the most relieved person when it was all over? The Collegian timekeeper, the Coach, or the Umpires, you as spectators. Peter Henderson, one of the most dedicated clubmen at Ivanhoe, seems to have found his niche in the forward pocket. "Hendo" has been stiff not to have "dobbed" a couple in the past few weeks, Sorry we missed it last week but "Fatz" Whelan played his tenth game for De La Salle and with a bit of luck could make it twelve before the season finishes. Notice the correct spelling "Fatz". Peter Sherman is to be commended on his efforts as goal umpire for the Reserves and he certainly shows fine club spirit in doing the job while recovering from his injury. Hope you are back soon Peter. Well done Peter McInerney. This winning a place in an All-Australian side now puts you in a very select group at Ormond and we are all very proud of you. We always knew the class was there and as they say - class always wins out!! Congratulations Macca. Some of the highlights of Old Geelong's "Black Tie" were the "musical" items provided firstly by Bobby Mims and the Hunglows, telling us of such club exploits as Law's sleeping habits and captain Mick's big handball. These were followed by Lonnie Donnie and the No-tunes who assured us that "Ber-lack tie nights are better than P-P-Pie nights." To top off the evening Reserves full back, and champion rover Ian Farran scored himself a free dinner, while Mick Crawford actually interrupted his evening's activities to get up and dance. Ball Briefs - continue d With Ron Bloss in the `van' (6 goals), A.M.P. Reserves scored a comfortable victory over O.G.G.S. Dave Grant was unbeatable in the middle, and Terry Booth played strongly all day. "Moose" Bucknall and "Mouse" Sirrianni returned to their best form, and Stevie "Wonder" did his bit. Roger Garfield and Peter Henderson showed glimpes. All members of the club wish Barry Long a speedy rerecovery following his accident last Saturday night. Nice return to match play by Merv "The Voice" Day with Fairfield Reserves. Merv has been out for a few weeks now with a bad knee injury and 7 goals in your debut is a good effort. He was ably supported by the Red Terror, Gil "The Otherone" Grace who got a million kicks. Congratulations to Helen and Len Stenlake from all Parksiders on the birth of a daughter to this couple two weeks ago. This production has now entered them in the baby stakes with the Rodda, McNamara, Rice and Welsh families. Old Trinity's Dart Brothers both put in fine performances last week. Tony in the reserves roved strongly all day with some fine marks and a great play-on game. Brother Dick in the seniors played well too, ending up at full forward, and scored four good goals. St. Pat's (Ball,) "old age pensioner" Jock Lardener won the best and fairest award last Saturday. He was heard later discussing at great length - pharmacy, trotting, housing loans. and jolly good beer. John "Percy" Whybrow did add a comment or two, here and there but generally remained quiet. Seems pharmacists aren't getting a fair go these days. Brunswick's big men Lee Gordon, and Keith Weybury gave a very capable display of ruck work and high marking against some very stiff opposition to create many opportunities for their team-mates. What looked like being a dismal defeat at half time for Old Camberwell last week was turned into a good win with a five goal burst in the last few minutes of the third quarter. Peter Hanson got proceedings under way with a 30 yard run topped off with a goal from 50 yards out. Then Ken Wood marked on the hack line, handpassed to Dave Tucker and the ball was shot into the forward line for another goal. Three more goals followed in quick succession and 'Camberwell led by that margin at three quarter time. In the last quarter the defence led by Tucker and Hewitt kept ANZ out despite the strong wind for a two goal victory. A get-well message to 3 of R.O.B.'s players. Don Scott (fractured ribs), Ron Jackson (dislocated elbow) and Kevin Poon (a hard knock). Make sure you all recover quickly chaps, because we are going to need you all for the finals. Best on the day for La, Trobe Uni. were: "Old Man" Sceney - a great captain's game, "Sparkes", the Sgro and "Daisy Daryl" Leorke. A determined Coburg pushed St. Bernard's Juniors hard all the way. Greg Hogan kept the home side in it with a good display of roving, Santamaria and Rahill were solid in defence and Peter Hogan despite a solid knock early gave a sound display in the second half. John Black played an outstanding game for Tooronga-Malvern Juniors, never putting a foot wrong all day. Bill Leifting gave another grand display in attack, John Tink and Andrew Lingard made welcome re-appearances with the side, both playing strongly. Sall Briefs continued University Juniors had a comfortable win against Ivanhoe last week. Things looked grim, however. in the second quarter when the side had 1-17 on the board. Burly full forward "Liquor" Lowe exposed his goal kicking and point kicking talent once again. Despite a heavy Friday night Robert Jeremiah turned in a good game. Another heavy drinker "Dirty Dave" King played another fine game on the wing. It was very heartening to see Tony Gobbo play so well when he came on after being out injured for the last few weeks. National Bank Juniors after a lapse have shown renewed interest and are looking forward to next season. Players, John Leeman, Morgan and Ryan have all kicked on and should be a force in 1971. Big plans are in the melting pot and should round off a successful season. Brian Park, Footscray Tech's winger played a fine game while on the ground last week. He kicked 2 great goals before being carried from the ground on a stretcher with another knee injury, Ian Murley battled hard all day and helped keep his side in the game until three quarter time only to see the whole side collapse in the final term, and scoring only 3 behinds with the wind while Old Scotch raced on nine against it. It's good to see Cliffo hasn't forgotten the Blacks. For the past two weeks he's come down from Broken Hill to support the team. A great clubman and handy player. Cliffo is being missed by the Blacks. He told our correspondent that the rucks are losing badly in his absence. Perhaps we could see Leigh back on the football field before too long. Well Glenhuntly, if we all give 100 minutes as Ian Nathan does each week and take advantage of the brilliance of David Morgan (improving each week) a win is assured, Hayden Bristow made his presence felt on return with some strong work and long kicking. Tony Marcucci plays his 50th game with St. Kevin's Old Boys this week. In his three seasons with the club Tony has played many great games and last year won the club's best and fairest award. A player with fine ball control, he has the ability to really fire the side and in recent weeks has shown glimpses of his best form. Keep up the good work Tony and we'll make the finals for sure. Congratulations to two St. Bernard's players who play their 50th games today Paul "Dina" Daffey and Brian `Loughy" O'Loughlin. Both players over the years have been fine team players and very good clubmen. However, if "Dino?' was half as good as he tells us he is then probably, he would have an average of more than one kick per game. "Louchy" undaunted by his size will go in any direction for a kick, but has been known to go in the wrong direction for a ground. Hi ya Pussy Cat and Gympie. It was ice a dixie ice weather last week, I see. I sea. Parkside players, Graeme Dryden. Dennis Thomas and Mario Sammut thrived in the conditions, and I guess the strength got some "action" from Edwards, and the "Deacon" shone like a beacon. Hope you both had wins, "B" with you soon, Poison Pen. St. Pat's (Ball.) reigning beauty - the lovely Coleen - once a Mercedes passenger has changed places for a newly painted light blue jeep. While Peter "The Chop" Hynes was spraying the jeep, evervone commented on the number of Bacardi and Cokes Mick "The Tig;er" Murrihy was seen buying our Coleen. 161=11 Briefs - continued A big double was landed at Brunswick last week when both the home sides won well in adverse conditions. Both teams were a credit to their respective coaches whose hard work is bearing fruit, Dick Mullett and Brian McPhail were the outstanding players in Old Camberwell Reserves win last week. Dick rucked well all day, took numerous marks and notched three handy goals two of them against the strong wind. Brian who was roving combined well with Dick and had a ton of kicks. Others to do well were Ian Edgar who was always going through to take the handpass and open up the game, Paul Erskine who gave great drive from centre half forward and John Wood who spent more time flying in the air for marks than he did on the ground. Congratulations to Fred "Chewy" Tuininga of R.O.B.'s on another fine game last week against La Trobe. Also Pete "Foot" Clarke, Hans Duke, Bob Craven, Jeff Parry, R. Jackson and Alan Ashworth on their fine games in the first eighteen side for some time. It just goes to show what a good reserve side we have when we can call on players like this. The lack of really tall timber has not helped St. Bernard's Juniors this season but Dessy "Warhorse" McGowan has done a wonderful job taking on all comers. Congrats. Des we might even buy you that seeing eye dog yet. Still striving to make the finals, Tooronga-Malvern Juniors gave a grand display against Parkside, handling the conditions, which were marred by a strong cross wind, very well. Eagerness to go in and get the ball, and using it to the fullest advantage were the features in their victory. Footscray Tech failed to live up to their previous week's form against Old Scotch last week. We appeared to be in a winning position at three quarter time but we fell apart and suffered another defeat. With "C" Section staring us right in the face we have nothing to lose by really having an all out effort against Blacks today. One solitary point stood between us and victory against Uni. Blacks last round. The Blacks may be having a lean trot as far as wins go at the moment, but there's nothing lacking in spirit. Credit must go to Peter O'Donoghue who really has the players behind him. Thanks are also due to Dr. Brian Costello, Keith Horsley and Alex Johnson for their weekly support. Maurice Dunlop is having a "good year" at Glenhuntly and got plenty of kicks last week. Jimmy Londkowski, Neil Alman and Tom McIntosh all did well and it's good to see Paul and Denis supporting from the other side of the fence. North Old Boys Reserves staged a gallant comeback in their last quarter against Old Xav's, but the leeway was just a little too great to make up. John Elderfield and Peter Rafter battled hard all day and it wasn't their fault that a three minute lapse at the end of the third quarter by the team brought about the eventual defeat. OM's Reserves ended a losing sequence by winning comfortably last week. Once again Harvey Tartakover showed out at centre half back and was well supported by Ross Campbell and Tim Moore. Les Caldwell approximately the sixteenth full forward tried this year played well and may be the answer to back Barry Wilson's dilemma who came out of retirement for the third time this season and has quickly hit form. Ball Briefs - continued As promised the car trial organised by St. Kevin's Old Boys social secretary Doe Doherty was a great success last week. The fantastic Oakley-Molan combination took off the major prize. This makes it two successive wins for Molan - he's a really good navigator. There were some notable performances. "Stinkin" Jack O'Connel and Neil Shepard who couldn't even interpret the panic envelope ; Mick Meyers who couldn't get rid of five cars following closely ; " Bomma" O'Malley who spent over half an hour trying to find lot 232 after he finally found the housing esate; Peter Randles and Tom Kehoe (and Margaret) who couldn't find the answer to any of the vital crossword clues. Well it's happened at last! Popular Old Haileyburians captain Andy Home is to be married next Monday. Congratulations from all the "Bloods" best wishes for the future and make sure Andy that you get back for the finals. "President" Liddell was starring for T-M's Reserves until he forgot to duck, and another veteran Brian Conquest really played his heart out. Super veteran "Johnno" kicked but one point, and is probably saving himself for an all out effort with "Gympie" after the next delegates' meeting. Another interesting feature was the return of the "Beast" and his mate. Failure to handle the blustery conditions and lack of team play saw the end of St. Kilda CBOC's Reserves finals hope. Few players showed determination for the four quarters with MeBurney, Harrison, Selkrig and Kennedy battling hard for most of the game. Assumption Reserves found no difficulty in again accounting for St. Kilda. In extremely difficult conditions they controlled the game throughout and with two accurate forwards in Noel O'Connell and John Shaw the result was never in doubt. Big Mike Canavan controlled the ruck all day and showed great judgement in keeping Wally Arnott away from the ruck for most of the day. That doyen of tomfoolery (who reaches his half century of appearances today) epitomised his aptitude for imbecility by accurately placing his only hit out for the day forty yards downfield - the wrong way. He attempted to smooth over his mistakes, by switching the conversation to building blocks! (?) Collegians Reserves deputy coach popular John, Moodie has at last announced his engagement as official the charming lass is the lovely Lynn Castles. Our club sincerely congratulates both of these young people and wishes them every happiness for their future. Another helper for the afternoon tea brigade Three "new chums" turned in the best performances in Ivanhoe's desperate effort to win against Collegians last week. Grant Borchers and Barry Hecker, after well deserved promotions from the reserves, both dominated their positions. Ron Baker, back after a spell in the juniors, showed he is back to his best. De La Salle Reserves are down but definitely not out. Players who fought the game out to the finish are to be commended Ricky Beers never gave up all day and was named our best player. Others who supported him were Gerald Hale, "Polly" Perkins and John Rathjens. In a close game all day De La Salle just failed to get the four points against Caulfield Grammarians. Chris Lofts did a great job in the ruck and resting in the back pocket. He was supported by Mark Janson on the wing, Tony Hunt at half forward and Shane Wright all over the ground. Reserve Section Finals now reads:- A player who has been a member of a senior team of any club in nine or more matches during the home-andhome matches in any season shall not be eligible for inclusion in the reserve team of a club taking part in a final match in the same season unless both the senior and reserve teams are participating in a final match on the same day. Provided that no player shall be eligible for inclusion in a reserve team taking part in a final match in any season unless such player has been a member of such reserve team in at least TWO home-and-home matches during the said season. (b) Which club will supply goal flags, time bell, numbers for scoring board etc. Check with the home club of the ground being used whether these items are available. FROM HERE AND TH E 250 GAMES AT HAMPTON Congratulations to Milton Beattie who will play his 250th game for Hampton. Rovers today. Milton commenced his football career with the club in the Juniors, and worked his way up into the Senior side where he played many fine games. In his later years with the club Milton played in the Reserves where he has led the side to three premierships in a row. Milton's football ability has left nothing to be desired and he has been an inspiration to his fellow players. All at Roverland congratulate Milton on his service as a player and a great clubman - what about that 300? 150trh TO ALPHINGTON PLAYER (?) When a player asks if he will reach 150 games before the end of this season, it behoves the researcher to reach for his spects. "Whizzer" Blegg should reach this mark today, but because his job takes him off on occasional Saturdays, we cannot be sure. This also qualifies him for life membership of Old Carey. Ross is the 4th member of the club to reach this milestone. The occasion was a double celebration for Ross as he announced his engagement last Saturday to Jeany Brewer. 100 UP TO OLD IVANHOE UTILITY MAN For the second week in a row Old Ivanhoe has a 100-game player. This time it's Doug Cuttriss. Doug has played all over the ground, starting at full back, then to full forward, back to the backline, and now in the centre. A versatile player and a good clubman. Well done Doug. CENTURY TO ORMOND RESERVE CAPTAIN Congratulations go to Neil Le Pag e of Ormond on playing his 100th game for the club. The "Copper" has been a great trier and grand clubman. This year as captain of the Reserves he looks like he could bring off a good double as captain of a premiership team and heading the goalkicking list for the Reserves. Well done Neil and here's to the next 100. TAKE A BOW VIC's (We don't usually take much notice of anonymous letters but this one is a little different. -Ed.). The Editor, As a Victorian supporter who viewed the carnival in Perth I would like to express my thanks to those players and members of our team who represented our State. In view of the team's MANY AD- VERSE circumstances compared with other visiting State sides, I am auite sure they acquitted themselves admirably, and were not entirely to blame for not winning the flag. Thanks to those stalwarts who did so much work for the team, and, after seeing our players I must say they were a terrific lot of fellas. Comments overheard from W.A.A.- F.A. officials and players regarding our boys were only good, and I am quite sure this trip has strengthened the bonds between them. From Here There nti" u The Geelong players can thank the following officials who have given extensively of their time and energies to the Senior XVIII in order that they can represent the club untrammeled by the worries of it's management Coach, John Vautier; Trainer, Ron Garner; Manager, Bob Poulton; Timekeeper, Bruce Collins ; Factotum of Jumpers, Mrs. R. W. Poulton. Reserve team can add to this list Mick Meagher, their Coach and David Leigh, officially their Manager, but actually the rest iolled into one. How D. Leigh does it, no one knows. He must have a tolerant, and, good lad y players Scott and Andy Jenkins, the Woods-men Grant and Graham. Rob McGregor and John Macgregor always cause problems with variations in spelling, as do club stalwarts Dave McInnes and Rob McGuinness. Probably the most famous pair is Terry "Best in Australia" Brown and goalkicking hackman Rod Brown. Memo to all footballers. - Never dry out wet boots on a Warmray. Fairfield has a player who did just that, and turned a dozen stops into one gooey mess. He didn't get a PAT on the back from his wife, either. Hello Poison Pen, Bleeder, Pussy Cat. We are now virtually safe from relegation with a crushing win over the 'tonners. Commonwealth Bank were always going like winners and their rugged tackling was worrying Alphington. The second term was one of our finest when, with lightning football, we slammed on 12-6 to 2-2. The last half was virtually a repeat of the first, and we ran out winners by 70 points. We played so well that bad players were non existant, but some stars who took my eye were Keith Imbery (7 goals), Richard Horban, Wayne McCrimmon, Tony D'Orsa, Ray Edwards (8 goals), Jim O'Brien (4 goals) and George Saynor. The Reserves could only field 17 men, but that's no excuse for them kicking 7-20. John Pretty, George Howard and Jeff Langsworth stood out as best players. An unusual circumstance at Old Geelong is the sets of players with the same or similar surnames who are not related. There are the Reserves ' CAR PARKING Cars must be parked as directed at Elsternwick Park, otherwise they will be refused admittance to the ground. Glum greetings, Bleeder. Another disappointing effort from our Senior team puts Parkside right in the hot seat. Best afield "Wee Willie" Rodda would be glad to hear I gave my votes to a pocket way-back player last week - that's a deep darkie one quote from Africa for education, "Willo'^ Norm. A "String-gur" barks Wayne, a real powerhouse player from their Juniors, has rubbished our under 19's at work, but I advised that players Greg "Cath" Chisholm, David "Killa" Kildea, Denis Baker, "Ricky" Datson, and others, would develop with experience and guidance from the Senior one to become the nucleus of future Parside's teams in generations to come. Our Reserves look s;-t for a flag this season if their good form of recent weeks continues, and the old fellow Brian "Harry" Lauder, who has played in more positions on the field than a wharf-labourer has shift sand moves as well as any of the younger brigade, including Peter Dryden and Ron "Yarh Yah" Moore, can keep kicking a few between the big sticks. From Here and There continued Greetings P.P. & G. & P.C., tis B. The smile has been wiped from my face by West Wicka's who incidentally played an extra good game to come out victors. Fairfield were very disappointing, but that's football. I must pay tribute to the efforts of Clifford "Biscuits" Guest who never gave up trying all day (how's that, Cons.?). "Bomber" Kenney was a fighter also, as too, was "Squirrel" Carmichael, whose mark and resultant goal in the last quarter was a gem. As from now I'm going on a diet of salty biscuits so I will be prepared for my encounter with Poison Pen and his pals on Saturday. Next episode will probably be written with a very shaky hand.
