February 2018 Presidents Message The New Year started off busy for many Zoomers members. We had a fun bike ride to Boca Grande on New Year s Eve hosted by Zoomers members Steve and Stacey Holmes. On January 6th, we held our annual Zoomers Banquet, everyone who attended enjoyed the event and loved the race/door prizes thanks to our event coordinator Roxanne Gillen. Durti Runners Race Timing was presented the 2017 Zoomers Business Sponsor of the year award for all they ve done for the club. Throughout the month of January, our members participated in events from Key West to Palatka, from 5k s to 24 hour Ultras. Zoomers purple left an everlasting positive impression in the events our members participated in. Zoomers hosted two successful free events in January. The Multi-Sport Clinic kicked off the 2018 Tri Season. Swim portion was conducted by sponsor Charlotte County Blue Fins Swim Masters; and the bike and run were hosted by sponsors Florida Hand Center and Coldwell Banker. Zoomers member Ed Gillen hosted the Myakka What Chee fun trail run at Myakkahatchee Creek Park. Zoomers members gathered together to run anywhere from 2 to 18+ miles, and enjoyed food, drinks and socializing after. On Jan 17th, Zoomers sponsored the Puna Gorda Pub Run at Scotty s Restaurant in Fishermen s Village. Raffle prizes such as Zoomers mugs and free memberships were donated to the event. We plan to have more Zoomers fun events throughout the year. Don t forget to join Zoomers Thursday night fun runs at Englewood Beach hosted by Sally Labonati or Thursday evening Triathlon training at South County Pool in Punta Gorda hosted by Rusty Starcher. Both of these events are free and all levels/paces are welcome. With the new year comes the 2018 Running and Multi-sport race series. Last year we had a total 111 participants between the two series, we hope to double that number this year. If you haven t done so already, please go to Zoomersrun.com to opt into one or both series. Lastly, this time of year it s starting to stay lighter longer. However, it still gets dark much earlier than in the summer and with the season, it brings significantly more traffic. So please be prepared when you are out running and biking. Make sure you have bright clothing and lights! Safety first is safety always. Happy Racing, Pat Vasquez, President 3 Zoomersrun.com

High School Student Spotlight Our Student Athlete this month is Isabella Grace Coogan. She is 17 years old, in 11th grade at Charlotte High School, and has been a Zoomers member for three years. Her mom, Christina Coogan, is an avid runner and also a Zoomers Member. Isabella has been a runner religiously for three years. She is a part of the National Honor Society, Interact Club, Charlotte High School Track, and the Tarpon Leadership Academy. Her favorite road race is the Firecracker 5k in North Port, because she thinks it is such a fun way to start out the fourth of July. It really gets you in a festive mood, and there are always many familiar faces to run with and to cheer you along. The longest distance Isabella ever ran was 14 miles, but that was by accident. She had to run to the start of the Brooklyn Half Marathon so they could make it to their corral on time! Her 5k PR is 18:23 and her 13.1 PR is 1 hour and 32 minutes. She enjoys running because it makes her feel free. When she runs she can forget about any other problems she is having, or things she needs to do. Running is a way for her to reset and ground herself. Some people think it is crazy to run, but they should see her when she doesn't run, that s crazy! (Her words) ~Denise Costa~ 4 Zoomersrun.com

ZOOMERS MULTI-SPORT CLINIC The Zoomers Multi-Sport Clinic held on January 20, 2018 was a great success. Our members braved the cold to help kick-off the 2018 Multi-sport season. Twenty-five members attended the event. The morning started off with a one-hour swim session hosted by Zoomers sponsor, Charlotte County Swim Masters Blue Fins, Coaches Danielle Chance and Shelley Valik. Members received training on proper technique and swim drills. Swim portion was followed by a 13+ mile bike ride presented by Zoomers sponsor, Florida Hand Center, Stephen Helgemo and Zoomers President/sponsor Pat Vasquez, Coldwell Banker. Cyclists were broken into two groups and received hands on interval instructions. After the bike, members ran three 1-mile laps around South County Park, some ran at their own pace, others completed builds or intervals. During the clinic, Charlotte County Swim Masters Blue Fins, was presented a $100.00 donation from Zoomers to the Charlotte County High School swim team. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this fun event. We look forward to doing more team building clinics. ldi 8 Zoomersrun.com

Zoomers member: The Carpenter Family Our member spotlight is a little different this month, instead of spotlighting one member we picked the Carpenter family, Todd, Talley, Couper, Isabella and Sophia. Todd likes the simplicity of running, but age makes it more difficult to run regularly so the cross training of swimming and biking works well for him and he finds that he is a better triathlete than runner. Todd s training is all about getting the most gains with the least amount of training. He swims mostly at home on a tether, bikes on a trainer and most runs are at home with his training partner and fellow zoomers member Brian Ward. It s all about efficiency and spending the least amount of time training while still getting gains. This coming tri season will be Todd s 3rd. His first triathlon was TopGun Fort Desoto 2016. Our family has been active in 5k races for over 5 years and we enjoy doing them together. Talley is working toward doing her first Triathlon this year. Talley really enjoys trail runs and xterra races in Alifia Park. Talley spent the last 4 years finishing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy so hasn t been as active with racing but has been the support person at the races. Triathlon is a little more exciting than running but it s not easy getting everyone and their equipment to the start line! It s a really great feeling when you re in the same triathlon as your kids and humbling when they kick your butt in the swim lol! The kids are more experienced with triathlons and were members of the trimonsters for a few years and that is what got us as a family into triathlons. We have lived in florida for 11 years, immigrating from New Zealand in 2007. We are pretty busy so we don t train together as a family as often as we would like. Every now and then Todd will go mountain biking with Couper or a road ride with Isabella and Sophia. The kids will go on runs with Talley here in the neighborhood. Sometimes we will join another triathlon family, the Briggs at Manasota beach for an open water swim. 16 Zoomersrun.com

Todd and Talley have 3 children. All of the kids are active and the family enjoys racing together. Isabella Thompson-Carpenter is 14 years old and in 9th grade at Venice High School. She comes from an Athletic family who run and competes in Triathlons together. She has been a Zoomers Member for 5 years. She has been a swimmer and runner since she was 6 years old and started triathlons at age of 10. She is a member of the Venice High School Varsity swimming team as a freshman. Her favorite swim stroke is breast stroke. The longest distance she has completed is a 10k race and adult Sprint triathlons. We look forward to watching this young athlete as she competes during her next four years of high school swim team and as a local triathlete. 17 Zoomersrun.com

From the Editors Desk I had the privilege of running a little bit with Craig Smith in the Hands Across The Harbor 1/2 marathon. Craig is a local runner who during the race in 2017 went down on the course and suffered a heart attack. This year he was determined to cross the finish line on foot and I am proud to say, he did it. Craig is back running, not competitively like he would like to be. Up until last year Craig was focusing on running a marathon in all 50 states. Today is just happy to be able to run again. If you would like to submit an article to The Finish Line Newsletter, please email it in Word format to zoomersnewseditor18@gmail.com by the 20th of the month preceding this monthly newsletter. Please submit to newsletter by February 20th for the March issue. We welcome you to share your personal experiences (running or otherwise), family vacations, photos, etc. Please do keep in mind there is a 300 word limit on all articles. ~Gail Marinari ~ 27 Zoomersrun.com
