TIPPING OFF Rice University men s basketball closes out its regular season non-conference schedule on Saturday with a home tilt against Harvard. The Owls are 3-2 at home on the season, including a two-game winning streak at Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice continues to lead Conference USA in defensive rebound percentage, hauling in 75.7 percent of opponents missed shots. The Owls allow fewer than 9.0 second-chance points per game. Sean Obi stands fourth in the league in rebounding with 9.4 boards per contest. The freshman ranks fifth in C-USA with a 60.0 percent field goal mark as well. LAST TIME OUT The Owls suffered a 66-44 setback at Texas on Monday, as the squad struggled to find its shooting touch against the Longhorns. Sean Obi led the squad with 10 points and 12 rebounds to record his fourth double-double of the season, but the outside shooters connected on just 6-of-29 three-pointers. Texas also benefitted from a 42-29 rebound margin and a 27-7 advantage in free throw attempts. TOO CLOSE TO CALL Rice has played eight games that have been decided by four points or less this season, including five of the last seven. Rice is 3-5 in those games, with six of the eight coming away from Tudor Fieldhouse. The only four-point game was an overtime setback against Rider, making all seven games come down to one possession in regulation. Rice matched the longest game in program history with a three-overtime win against South Alabama on Dec. 7. DOUBLING UP Freshman Sean Obi notched the first doubledouble of the season at TAMU-Corpus Christi with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the win. He followed that performance with a monster game against South Alabama, including 25 points and 19 boards in the three-overtime triumph. The rookie made it two games in a row with a double-double when he notched 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Northwood. Rice is 3-1 when Obi records a double-double after the setback at Texas, in which he tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds. Obi has had nine rebounds and at least nine points in two games as well. Max Guercy tallied 17 points with a careerhigh nine assists at Texas A&M, nearly accomplishing the feat for the first time in his career. He also had 20 points and nine boards against South Alabama, another near-miss. Tamir Jackson had two double-doubles for Rice last season. C-USA ACCOLADES Sean Obi carried on the recent tradition of Owls winning Conference USA Freshman of the Week honors when he picked up his first award from the league on Nov. 25. For the week, he averaged a double-double with 12.5 points and 10.0 rebounds. He gave Rice the lead for good and earned the gameclinching rebound at TAMU-CC, where he led Rice with 16 points and 11 boards. His nine points and nine rebounds against Princeton were also team highs. Max Guercy was honored as a member of the Conference USA All-Freshman team for his outstanding rookie campaign. The point guard started all 31 games and scored 9.5 points per game to accompany 2.5 assists and an 80.5 free throw percentage. Guercy earned five C-USA Freshman of the Week awards. CABLE CAR CLASSIC Rice continued its recent trend of tight games as it traveled west for the Cable Car Classic over Thanksgiving weekend in Santa Clara, Calif. The Owls set a program record with 18 threepointers against Rider in the opening round, but fell, 97-93, in overtime to the Broncs. Austin Ramljak knocked down seven threepointers in the game for a career-high 25 points, while Seth Gearhart was 6-of-10 from downtown for 20 points. The Owls 25 assists in the game were the most since 2009, when the team matched that total against Southern Miss. Sean Obi then paced the team with a seasonhigh 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting in the consolation game against host Santa Clara. The Owls maintained a lead throughout the game before the Broncos gained an advantage for the first time with 6.9 seconds to play. Keith Washington then took the ball the length of the court for the game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds remaining for the 67-66 win. SIX MAKE C-USA HONOR ROLL Among Rice s 215 members on the 2012-13 Conference USA Commissioner s Honor Roll, six men s basketball players made the list by posting a cumulative grade point average above 3.0. Bahrom Firozgary, Seth Gearhart, Max Guercy, Dan Peera, Austin Ramljak and Ross Wilson were each honored by the league for their success in the classroom. Rice s six honorees were the most by any conference program, followed by UCF s five. There were 34 total honorees in the conference. GP-GS CAREER STATS VS. HARVARD EARLY SIGNEES, 2014 Rice announced the signing of two players in the early period in November. Jordan Reed (G, 5-11, Lucas, Texas): As a junior, Reed earned first team all-district 13-4A honors and was also named to the academic all-district team and was the school s defensive player of the year for head coach Kyle Herrema. He averaged 10.3 points, 2.6 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game with a 50 percent shooting clip from the field and 80 percent from the foul line. Maurice Rivers (6-7, F, Atlanta, Ga.): Columbia advanced to the state championship game last season, and has won five of the past eight Georgia state titles. As a junior in 2012-13, Rivers averaged 12 points and nine rebounds per game for coach Kerry Sandifer. KARASCH DIET Thanks to a lot of hard work as well as direction from strength and conditioning coach Rick Karasch, freshman Andrew Drone last lost more than 35 points since the fall semester began. On the other hand, Bahrom Firozgary has bulked up by more than 20 pounds this year. Head coach Ben Braun has publicly lauded Karasch, now in his first full year at Rice, as helping the entire team work into great shape. JACKSON BEGINS PRO CAREER Upon graduating from Rice in May 2013, Tamir Jackson stood in the program s top 10 in several categories for his outstanding career. Jackson first signed on to play in the NBA Summer League with the New Orleans Pelicans in Las Vegas. He saw limited action for the team as the squad featured numerous draft picks and new players with the organization. Following that experience, he signed a contract with Israel s Elitzur Yavne and traveled overseas to begin the season in late September. HARRIS RETURNS TO THE ASSOCIATION Mike Harris, Rice s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, signed a contract with the Utah Jazz in the preseason and has already made his mark with the team in the regular season. Harris previously played in stints with the Houston Rockets and Washington Wizards. FG-FGA PCT 3FG-FGA PCT FT-FTA PCT REB-AVG. AST. SCHOLAR-ATHLETES Rice is the only team in the league to have at least one scholar-athlete named to the Conference USA All-Academic Basketball Team each of the past seven seasons after economics major Seth Gearhart and psychology major Austin Ramljak earned the honor on March 8, 2013. Rice has had two honorees each of the past four seasons. In order to be named to the Honors Court, student-athletes had to meet a set of standards including being either a junior or senior, have a cumulative 3.20 or higher grade point average and have matriculated at least one year at their NCAA or NAIA institution. Rice was one of 28 NCAA Division I institutions to have multiple honorees on the NABC Honors Court. The Owls got an early start on the 2013-14 season with a summer tour of Canada. Rice began holding practice in July and spent seven days in British Columbia, playing three exhibitions against local college teams. Despite working seven newcomers into the rotation, the Owls looked sharp throughout the week and defeated all three opponents - University of British Columbia, University of Fraser Valley and Capilano University - by 22 points or more. In the first game of the tour, Rice came together to sink 16 three-pointers en route to a 96-70 win against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Senior Austin Ramljak knocked down 7-of-10 threepointer to lead the Owls with 25 points, while newcomer Marcus Jackson added 22 points of his own in his first unofficial action in the Blue and Gray. Answering the question What s your college? starts as soon as a new Rice student walks through the sally port of iconic Lovett Hall the first night of O-Week (new student orientation). One of the unique aspects of Rice University is the residential college system. Students often cite the college system as one of the best, most rewarding things about Rice. All students are randomly assigned to one of 11 self-governing residential colleges. More than just a residence hall, Rice s colleges are students primary place for dining, studying and socializing. CANADA 2013 SUMMER TOUR WHAT S YOUR COLLEGE? QUALITY OF LIFE AND HAPPINESS Rice University grades its students throughout the school year, and now the students have graded Rice via the Princeton Review s annual survey. Rice received a solid A in the form of top rankings for quality of life and happiest students in 2013. For the past few years Rice has ranked first or second in the categories, and that tradition continues in the Review s The Best 378 Colleges. Rice is No. 1 for best quality of life and No. 2 for happiest students. Rice has ranked No. 1 for best quality of life four times before and No. 1 for happiest students the past two years. The Princeton Review surveyed 126,000 students at 378 top colleges about their schools academics and administration, life at their college, their fellow students and themselves. The guide lists the top 20 schools for 62 categories, and Rice appears on nine of the lists. Just one day later, the Owls took to the road to take on the University of Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford. Rice maintained its hot shooting touch from the night before, sinking 11 of its first 15 three-point attempts and knocking down 15 for the game. Sophomore Keith Washington stepped up and led the team with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting in the 88-62 triumph. The final game of the trip proved to be the most tightly contested as Rice and the Capilano University Blues battled back and forth for the better part of three quarters. The Owls then opened the fourth quarter with a 14-4 run to break the game open and cruise to an eventual 73-51 win. Mvax Guercy led Rice in scoring with 20 points, including five three-pointers. Members of the Rice basketball team represent eight of the 11 colleges. Below is a breakdown of the Owls squad list by college: Baker: Drew Bender, Marcus Jackson Duncan: Joey Burbach Hanszen: Austin Ramljak, Keith Washington Jones: Hunter Eggers, Sean Obi Lovett: Nizar Kapic, Ross Wilson Sid Richardson: Denzel Davis, Andrew Drone Wiess: Bahrom Firozgary, Max Guercy Will Rice: Seth Gearhart, Dan Peera BEN BRAUN Head Coach Wisconsin, 1975 Sixth Season At Rice: 61-112 Overall: 613-501 Early in his tenure, Rice University basketball coach Ben Braun positioned the Owls for the future. The success on the recruiting trail, work on the practice court and efforts in the community have certainly come to fruition. With an incredibly young roster in 2012-13, the Owls relied on Tamir Jackson while the younger portion of the roster quickly gained collegiate experience. The senior worked his way into sixth on the program s career scoring list and into the top four in several other offensive and defensive categories despite a challenging 5-26 record. Braun also mentored rookie point guard Max Guercy to five C-USA Freshman of the Week awards and a spot on the league s all-freshman team. The Owls capped off the year by being one of just 21 NCAA Division I programs to earn the inaugural NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, given to programs with a cumulative grade point average above 3.0 for the full season. Among the highlights of the season were memorable comebacks by the resilient Owls. Rice s furious rally from 15 points down in an eventual 79-69 win over Houston ranked among the greatest comebacks in program history. The Owls overcame other double-figure deficits on the season, including 18 points in the C-USA Championship opener. Noting Coach Braun Rice head coach Ben Braun completed 2012-13 with a 608-494 (.552) all-time record. The 608 victories rank him 12th on the active NCAA Division I Coaching Win List. Has had student-athletes named to conference all-academic teams 26 times over the last 17 seasons. Has coached 17 players who have been NBA Draft picks or gone on to play in the NBA. One of nine active Division I head coaches who currently has three or more assistants serving as head coaches at Division I institutions. Fifth-youngest coach in NCAA history to reach 500 wins. Has posted 14 20-win seasons during his career. A four-time conference coach of the year at the Division I level. Has led 17 teams to the postseason, including two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances as well as an NIT championship. RiceOwls.com - 5 - RiceBasketball
