PO Box 2273, Bayswater Village LPO, Bayswater, 3153 www.knoxroadrunners.com Knox Roadrunners October 2008 newsletter Melbourne Marathon 2008 Sunday 12 October A tough day with heat and a strong headwind made the day hard for our runners. In great news, our men s and women s Marathon teams have both won first prize. Whilst the three times that counted were Tigger, Vic, and Anthony for the men s and Marie, Michelle & Nicole for the women, all of our entrants were part of the team and share the glory. Well done all. Marathon Net time Special mention Bryan Ackerly 2:54 2 nd M40 and 41 st male Vic Potter 3:12 1 st place M60 Marie Kavanagh 3:14 6 th F40 and 18 th lady Anthony Boulton 3:22 Michelle Tham 3:27 12 th F40 Drikus Dreyer 3:29 Nicole Diamond 3:41 17 th F40 Tom Boyd 3:42 Spartan Peter Bignell 3:46:00 Kathy Souter 3:46:01 10 th F45 Denise Hearn 3:47 John Signorini 3:48 Sandra Doyle 3:49 rookie Narelle Hart 3:50 rookie Bret Butler 3:56 Mike Bower 3:59 Milan Stanisic 4:09 Spartan John Raskas 4:14 Spartan, 20 th M60 Neil Woods 4:23:32 Helen Stanley 4:23:50 13 th F50 Gerry Verdoorn 4:30 Sarah James 5:00:29 Corne Smit 5:00:29 Chris Smit 5:00:29 Before we boarded the bus to the MCG feeling good Marathon Stats: 3750 entered Marathon 3321 finished 816 females & 2505 males finished Tom, Denise & Milan before the pain. www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 1

It was an early start at Bayswater for the bus to the MCG. Valet parking c/o IMG was special. We were chauffeured by Driver to the Stars Big Dave Weedon. The day was a shocker with 30 deg C for the first time since last summer and a head wind for the final 20k. The Half runners held up well but most of the Marathoners had days of hell. To our two Marathon rookies Sandy & Narelle, every Marathon is hard, this one was diabolical. John Dean who have now completed 31 MM s. Shirley & Ron Young an inspiration. Sandra in her first Marathon Friends note, Shirley Young began her 31 st Melbourne with the usual drive but struggled in the heat and after a fall late in the race, was unable to finish. Her record at this event is brave and strong and we recognise her achievement. We also recognise the 11 continuing Spartan Legends led by Narelle in her first Marathon It was wonderful to see so many KR Supporters on the course - including Karen, Fran, Jimmy, Chas, Bruce Edwards, Bronwen & Dave, Anna, Steve Harris, Phil & Fiona, Greg, plus Kim & Paul. There were also plenty of family members and friends attending & supporting a great atmosphere. www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 2

Nicole getting outside assistance from good mate Kim We are a real presence in the running community and especially at big events. Corne, Chris & Sarah crossed the line together and had the usual here come the famous Knox Roadrunners. We have had multiple contacts in the days since from runners that saw us in action and want to join us. Maybe it was the chicken, salad and drinks for $5 that enticed some. Special thanks to the Whites & Woods for arranging this a difficult job done well it sets a tough standard. Staying together at the end to cheer all our runners home and eating and resting is a pretty good finish. Half Net time Special mention Sam de Fanis 1:35 3 rd M60 Spartan Bruce Rattenbury Chris White 1:37:38 1:37:11 9 th M55 Peter White 1:49 Spartan Grant Scurry 1:55 David Thorn 1:57:03 David Souter 1:57:36 Derek Dawkins 1:59 Lesley Bower 2:00 Tom Richardson 2:02 Peter Vince 2:07 Spartan Ariana Senior 2:10 rookie Heather White 2:29 Peter Forrest 2:41 Chris White & Sam at the finish of the half The last word on this Marathon goes to Sandy Doyle. After completing her rookie Marathon she verbally attacked an ailing President with: Why do you encourage people to do this? I cursed you all the way up St Kilda Road. What are these two up to? Pete & Jimmy sampling the $5 lunch good value for a Scotsman. Note the pinky in the air true class. www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 3

Pilks in full flight as the Indian Denise introduced our KR Spartans, and Peter White introduced the KR entrants in the Marathon and Half for 2008. Little did we know what lay ahead. A grinning Gerry found 42k a laugh Other visitors included Ian Gainey until 2008 the only wheelie Spartan, and many of the Spartan Legends who have run all 31 MM s. John Dean as Spartan President is always welcome at Knox. Singlet looks fast & good Vic, but the hat needs work. First place in M60 was a great effort. Spartans Day Saturday 4 October Another big day on the calendar. Special guest John Pilks Pilkington started us well with stories selected from his 52 Marathons across the world including 26 Melbourne. His story of running as a Red Indian with an arrow through the heart for a 2:49 finish had us rolling in the aisles. We then had a 14km run to UFTG return and Ian joined us and kept Tigger busy at the front of the pack. Breakfast followed where tall tales and true were shared of success & failure past. Taper anyone? Our fast 14k in the morning of the Spartans run was not enough for Tigger. He headed into the Dandenong s for a tune up to www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 4

continue his taper for MM. He also had his usual orienteering planned for the Sunday and when he found a Sunday fun run at Westerfolds would fit nicely in on the way to orienteering, he could not resist. On a hilly 10k course, Tigger blazed around in a new PB of 35:17 winning the event and a major holiday prize. Maybe we should all do that prior to MM2009 NOT! Christmas Party Saturday 20 December @ 7.30pm We are again holding a party at the Bayswater clubrooms. This year it will be held on Saturday 20 December 7.30pm start. We will have finger food catered for, DJ music, and BYO drinks. We need a new theme so instead of green & red as per last year the new committee has suggested red & green this year. See what you can do. Bring your dancing shoes and a sunny disposition. This is a chance to get together to analyse the year, plan 2009, and enjoy the company of your running friends. Family and running friends are welcome. Cost will be finalised later but expect approx $20 per person for food & entertainment. Johnny s a happy boy. Pete s glad he can get some chicken & salad now More photo s: Kathy in a top 10 F45 finish 2008 is a good year. Sam & Bruce celebrate their good Half Marathons. AGM Saturday 18 October New committee voted in: President: VP: Secretary: Treasurer: Mike Bower Bret Butler Michelle Tham Neil Woods Committee: Helen Stanley Helen moving well in the Marathon. John Signorini Nicole Diamond Kim Wright Denise Hearn Thanks to retiring committee = Peter White, Gavin Morton, and Anthony Boulton. These are three fantastic members who have contributed much to our committee & club. Our new Secretary giving the Glam look. The new committee is keen and capable. We will advise of specific responsibilities after our first meeting soon. It s nice to get one of the early KR members in Cammo to join the committee. Welcome also to Denise. Some more Marathon day photos also courtesy of Paul Wright: The Doc is wired for sound in the Half. Maybe Nicole was the only one to run up St Kilda Rd www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 6
