DIVOT DIGEST www.bccwv.com July 2014 Edition Caroline Wins Wins 12th Championship Congratulations to our own Caroline Ramsey for winning her 12th WV Women s Senior Amateur Championship! Caroline held off strong competition at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville to claim the title. Caroline and others played in sweltering heat that week, and she proved yet again that her steady, consistent play is just too hard to beat. Caroline shot a stellar two-day total of 150, 8 over par, to fend off second place finisher, Bobbie Karr who finished with a two-day total of 154. Caroline is not only a winner on the golf course, but in her stewardship of the game of golf. Thanks, Caroline, for your first class representation of our club and city! Unforgettable Member Guest The 2014 Member Guest will leave many with life-long memories, especially for Col. Ron Braddock and Ryan Mason, who claimed the overall title after closing the door on the competition in the first hole of the Sunday Shootout. Second were brothers Russ and Jeff Francis and third was Lenny Wilson and Mr. Potter. Members enjoyed breakfast and lunch for two days, a steak fry Friday evening, 3 full days of golf, open bars, and a great party Saturday night that roused the neighboring houses! Next year you may see a twist in the Saturday party, such as a pool bash with dinner and music, as well as an exciting change to our tee gift! Be sure to sign up next year you do not want to miss this exceptional weekend! dfdfd The prettier side of the Member Guest Some of the lucky player s dates. Message From the Superintendent Mother Nature has treated us well with her rain; it has helped keep our roughs green. With hard work from the crew, the course has been in good condition and the new greens are doing very well. We do have small areas on the new greens that will need time to recover and heal from the construction. July and August are always the most challenging months. We will utilize our irrigation system to keep the Greens, Tees and Fairways cool and watered. Depending on the heat, this may require daytime watering to cool them down please bear with us. Thanks for your cooperation in raking traps, fixing ball marks and replacing or sand/seeding divots. Please consider fixing an extra ball mark or divot if you see one. ~Steve M. First Hole-in-One on New #8 John Albert Markovich was the first to hit a hole-in-one on the new #8 green over the Member-Guest Weekend. On Saturday John dialed up a 6-iron from the back tee to a back-left pin. The ball landed just a few inches from the hole and bounced in the cup with barely a sound. On Sunday, in the last 9-hole match of the tournament, John almost hit another, hitting it within three inches of the cup! John Albert played with Mark Oliverio that weekend and finished second in the flight to overall winners, Col. Ron Braddock and Mark s nephew Ryan Mason. 2

LADIES GOLF REPORT The month of June was busy and interesting for the WGA, with a mix of unique playing formats of Penny Ante where you must pay your group for every three-putt, and Disaster, where points are awarded for common disasters such as 3-putts and hitting into a hazard. Rita Robbins, Gloria Hawkins and Becky Cropp managed to stay out of the most trouble on the golf course, at least with a score of only 2 points for only 2 mistakes! That s hard to beat! On June 24, the women held their President s Cup. Cindy Davis had the low net score to claim this years Cup! There was also a tee-to-green competition where Becky Cropp and Cindy Davis tied. Want to join in the fun, mark your calendars for every Tuesday at 9:00am. Or, come out for evening play on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, throughout the summer, starting at 5:00pm. A Message from the Board of Directors Wow what a difference a couple months makes. We have had almost 50 new members join BCC since the beginning of April. Our total membership now exceeds 330 and our full golfing member count tops 300. When you see a new face at the club, make sure you welcome them to BCC. New members don t be shy there are only a couple members that will bite ;-). Join your new fellow members in club events, from competitive golf to lawn parties. It s hard to believe we are half way through 2014. But, there is still a lot of summer left and a lot of activity at your club. Please check your bills for monthly calendars and your emails for alerts. For golf, we still have the Junior/Senior tournament, the Club Championship, the Senior Club Championship, and the Presidents Cup among others. All events are handicap driven and players are grouped with others of like skill, so don t hesitate to sign up and be part of the fun and competition. Participation is key to our club s success. Financially, the extended winter started us in a little hole but we are already working our way out. The membership numbers are now on target and our staff leaders are doing a great job controlling costs. Barring any unforeseen expenses, we will not have any member assessment for 2014. I think we can all agree that the new greens have come back great and the whole course is in awesome shape. Special thanks to Steve Marnic and crew for a great job! Our Food and Beverage staff has been incredible, as well - if you have not stopped out to enjoy a meal, you have only cheated yourself. Hats off to VJ Baldini, Barb, Steph, Deanna, and the rest of that team for a super job and product. I can Above #9 just 3 months ago. Below #11 just 3 days ago. also throw in the golf shop staff and the pool staff. Bottom line is - BCC is the best value club in the area and I am happy you all are part of it! So come on out and enjoy your BCC!!! ~Doug
