a2016-17 Washington Men s Basketball Husky Notes Scoring Depth Despite losing their top three scorers from last year, the Huskies have had no problem fi lling the stat sheet as fi ve Dawgs are averaging over 10 points over the fi rst seven outings. Freshman Markelle Fultz leads the group at 22.7 and is joined by sophomores David Crisp (13.9 ppg), Matisse Thybulle (11.3 ppg), Noah Dickerson (11.3 ppg) and Dominic Green (10.9). Additionally, all five of those players have recorded at least one 20-point game this season. Scoring Up as a Whole Not only did Washington score over 90 points in fourstraight games for the first time since the 2005-06 season when they knocked in 99 vs. American (Nov. 19, 2005), 90 vs. Idaho (Nov. 22, 2005), 112 vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 25, 2005) and 99 vs. Gonzaga (Dec. 4, 2005) but Washington is second in the Pac-12 in scoring, averaging 88.1 ppg which also ranked 13th nationally. The Huskies also scored 86 points or more in fi ve-straight games for the fi rst time in the Lorenzo Romar era. Hot from the Field The Huskies have shot less than 45 percent from the fi eld in just one game this season and are shooting 49.2 percent in seven outings which ranks 32nd nationally. Take a look at some of the other hot shooting stats from the Dawgs this season: --UW s three-straight 50%+ shooting efforts to start the season marked the first time since 2013-14 that UW has shot that well in three-straight games. ( State, 2/22/14, 57.4%;, 2/28/14, 51.0%;, 3/6/14, 55.4%). -UW scored 90 or more points in four straight games for the first time since the 2005-06 season when they knocked in 99 vs. American (Nov. 19, 2005), 90 vs. Idaho (Nov. 22, 2005), 112 vs. Loyola Marymount (Nov. 25, 2005) and 99 vs. Gonzaga (Dec. 4, 2005). -UW is second in the Pac-12 in scoring, averaging 88.1 ppg which ranks 13th nationally. -UW s blistering 58.9 percent (33-of-56) from the fi eld against Yale was its highest single-game FG percentage since shooting 61.2 percent (41-of-67) against Long Beach State on Nov. 30, 2010. Length, Length, Length Washington s roster is quite lengthy and not because of quantity. Out of the 14 on the roster, six of the key players have wingspans that are at least four inches longer than their actual height. Senior forward Malik Dime s wingspan is eight inches bigger than his 6-9 frame at 7-5 while sophomore Matisse Thybulle brings a 7-0 wingspan on his 6-5 body. Take a look: Player Height Wingspan Malik Dime 6-9 7-5 (+8) Matisse Thybulle 6-5 7-0 (+7) Markelle Fultz 6-4 6-10 (+6) Dominic Green 6-6 6-11 (+5) Matthew Atewe 6-8 7-1 (+5) Bitumba Baruti 6-6 6-10.5 (+4.5) Thybulle Stepping Up Sophomore Matisse Thybulle, who is the only Husky to have started the last 41 games, has been very effi cient offensively this season. He s upped his scoring average by fi ve points and has made massive increases in shooting percentage. Take a look at his numbers compared to last year: Stat 15-16 16-17 PPG 6.2 11.3 FG% 39.7 47.3 3FG% 36.6 46.2 Flirting w/a Triple Double In the 115 years of Washington men s basketball history, there has yet to be a player to record a triple double. Freshman Markelle Fultz has been very close a few times this season just through seven games, take a look: vs. Yale 30 pts, 7 rebs, 6 assists vs. CS-Fullerton 16 pts, 8 assists, 7 rebs vs. W. Kentucky 10 assists, 9 pts, 8 rebs at TCU 21 points, 14 rebs, 6 assists Fultz s Accountability Freshman Markelle Fultz has had a huge hand in UW s scoring this season as he has been accountable for 44.2 percent of UW s 617 points between his 22.7 ppg and 6.6 apg. Take a look: vs. Yale 45 of 90 points (50.0%) vs. CS-Fullerton 49 of 104 points (47.1%) vs. NAU 36 of 92 points (39.1%) vs. LBSU 36 of 94 points (38.2%) vs. WKU 34 of 86 points (39.5%) vs. TCU 36 of 80 points (45.0%) at TCU 37 of 71 points (52.1%) Defensive Numbers vs. WKU UW held WKU to 47 points thanks to keeping the Hilltoppers without a point for 7:16 during the fi nal eight minutes of the game... WKU s 47 points are the fewest by a UW opponent since OSU scored just 43 on Jan. 15, 2015. WKU shot just 25.4 percent from the fi eld (17-of- 67), which is the fourth-lowest FG percentage by an opposing team during the Romar era and the lowest at a neutral or road site during that span... additionally, it is the lowest since Grambling shot just 23.3 percent on Dec. 17, 2014. UW held WKU to just 16 points in the second half, the lowest by an opponent since State had just 15 in the fi rst half on Jan.15, 2015 UW recorded 60 rebounds in its win over WKU for its most since 60 against Mount St. Mary s (11/19/15) Big Men are Back The Huskies boast their deepest big man roster this season with four players who have the chance to impact the game. The Dawgs return both 6-9 senior forward Malik Dime and 6-8 sophomore forward Noah Dickerson while adding in 6-11 freshman Sam Timmins and 6-8 junior transfer Matthew Atewe. Both Timmins and Atewe have been on campus since at least December of 2015 and have been able to practice and learn the UW system heading into this season. Block Party The Huskies tied the single-game school record for blocks against Yale as they tallied 15, tying the mark set a year ago against in Seattle (Jan. 20, 2016)... in the most recent NCAA Stats (through games as of Dec. 3) Washington s 7.7 blocks per game currently rank third in the NCAA while Malik Dime s 3.0 blocks per outing are tied for 15th nationally. Back-to-Back 30 Point Games Freshman Markelle Fultz became just the third Husky under head coach Lorenzo Romar to record back-toback 30 point games as he notched 30 in his freshman debut and 35 in the following game. He joins the company of Brandon Roy (35 vs. ASU and UA in Dec. 2005) and Andrew Andrews (33 vs. ASU and 30 vs. in Jan. 2016). Additionally, he s the only player in the NCAA to have back-to-back 30 point games this season. Fultz s Freshman Debut Freshman standout Markelle Fultz made his presence known during his Husky debut as he led the team in points (30), rebounds (7) and assists (6). He s the first Husky since Andrew Andrews had 30, six and five at State (Feb. 24, 2016) to lead the team in those three categories. His 30 points also tie for the most this early in the season by a Dawg - Isaiah Thomas had 30 as a sophomore on Nov. 13, 2009. Fultz Picks Up National Attn Freshman Markelle Fultz s meteoric rise to the top of the 2016 class has been well chronicled and the accolades didn t stop once he joined the Husky squad this summer. He has been named a preseason All-American and preseason Freshman of the Year by many outlets heading into the season. Take a look: USA Today Preseason Freshman of the Year CBS Sports Preseason Freshman of the Year CBS Sports Preseason First Team All-American Sports Illustrated Preseason First Team All-American Athlon Preseason First Team All-American USA Today Preseason Second Team All-American Watchlists for Fultz Along with earning recognition from the national media, freshman Markelle Fultz was also named to the watch lists for three national awards. He is one of 50 on the initial Naismith Trophy Player of the Year watchlist, one of 50 for the John Wooden Award, and is one of 20 on the initial Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year watchlist. He s one of four freshman to earn a spot on all three lists joining De Aaron Fox (Kentucky), Lonzo Ball () and Dennis Smith (N.C. State). Australia-New Zealand Recap The Huskies were able to take their every-four-years foreign tour this summer and spent 12 days between Melbourne, Christchurch and Sydney. The Dawgs went 3-2 in their fi ve games against professional teams down under and were led by freshman Markelle Fultz who averaged 21.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in those outings. He also led the team with 23 assists and added six blocks. Sophomore David Crisp averaged 13.2 points while sophomore Noah Dickerson averaged a double-double with 11.4 rebounds and 10.6 points while playing an average of 20 minutes per outing. Additionally sophomore Dominic Green added 11.2 points per game. Returning Experience Despite losing its three top scorers from a year ago, Washington returns a wealth of experience as four players return that averaged over 20 minutes a game a year ago in Matisse Thybulle (24.1), Noah Dickerson (22.3), David Crisp (21.4) and Malik Dime (21.1). Thybulle is the only player returning that started every game a year ago but Crisp and Dime also saw action in all 34 games. Dickerson is UW s returning leading scorer as he averaged 7.5 points and 5.2 rebounds last season. Coaching Updates During the offseason, Raphael Chillious, who was integral in bringing standout Markelle Fultz to Washington, was elevated to Associate Head Coach for the Dawgs. Additionally, head coach Lorenzo Romar hired Michael Porter from Missouri as an assistant coach and former assistant Brad Jackson is now the special assistant to the head coach. Additionally, former Husky Will Conroy is now in his second year with the Dawgs as an assistant coach. 2016-17 Husky Basketball

a2016-17 Washington Men s Basketball Husky Notes Exh Recap: 109-106 Over WWU Washington prepared for their season with a 109-106 win over Western Washington University that saw six players reach double-figures including three of the fi ve starters. Sophomore Dominic Green led the team with 25 points and tied the team-high with seven rebounds while adding two assists. Sophomore David Crisp added 23 points as he went 13-of-15 from the FT line. Sophomore Matisse Thybulle racked up 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting including a 3-of-5 mark from 3-point range and added six rebounds in 27 minutes. The Dawgs shot 53.2 percent from the fi eld (33-of-62) and 40.9 percent from 3-point range (9-of-22). Washington-Based Roster This year s squad includes six players from the state of Washington and over the last 14 seasons, Romar has had at least six players from the state six times. Those fi ve teams have combined for three NCAA tournament appearances, two Sweet 16s and two Pac-12 titles (one regular season, one tournament). Huskies in the NBA Washington s presence in the NBA remains strong as the Huskies boast eight former players currently holding spots on rosters in the league this season - Marquese Chriss (Phoenix Suns), Spencer Hawes (Charlotte Hornets), Justin Holiday (New York Knicks), Dejounte Murray (San Antonio Spurs), Quincy Pondexter (New Orleans Pelicans), Terrence Ross (Toronto Raptors), Isaiah Thomas (Boston Celtics) and C.J. Wilcox (Orlando Magic). Washington also had two players drafted in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft marking the second time two Huskies have gone in that round under head coach Lorenzo Romar. Atewe Available Auburn transfer Matthew Atewe, a 6-8 forward, is now eligible to play for the Huskies after sitting out last season. Atewe spent two years at Auburn but was injured following an exhibition game his sophomore season causing him to the miss the year. The last time Atewe played in a regular season collegiate game was March 12, 2014 and when he stepped on the court against Yale (Nov. 13), it was 977 days in between his last regular season game. Class of 2017 The Huskies signed their highest ranked class under head coach Lorenzo Romar on Nov. 9 with fi ve agreeing to join UW for the 2017-18 season. The class, which features three players ranked in ESPN s Top 60 is ranked No. 2 overall by ESPN and is third by both Scout and Rivals.com. It s the second time in three years UW has brought in a top 10 class and the third time in as many years that UW s recruiting group has been ranked in the top 20 nationally. a2016-17 UW Men s Basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar Coach Lorenzo Romar (15th Yr. at Washington, 21st Yr. Overall) Just completing his 14th season, Lorenzo Romar has led UW to 10 post-season appearances and has registered winning records in 13-straight years. Romar, the 18th head men s basketball coach at Washington, has earned Coach of the Year three times (2012, 2009 & 2005) and is the dean of coaching in the Pac-12 having spent more seasons at UW than any other current coach at their school. Romar owns a 293-177 (.623) record at Washington and is 386-265 (.593) in 21 seasons overall. The fi rst African- American head basketball coach at UW, Romar is second all-time in victories at UW and reached 200 wins second fastest. Washington has won its fi rst two outright conference titles (2012 & 2009) since 1953 under the direction of Romar. He has led UW to six NCAA tournament Appearances -- all in spurts of three-consecutive seasons (2004-05-06 & 2009-10-11) -- and the school s fi rst back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances (2005 & 06). Overall, he has led Washington to three Sweet 16 appearances. In 2012 he led UW to the semifinals of the NIT, a fi rst in UW history. He was the 2005 Pac-10 and Black Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Romar played point guard for Marv Harshman s 1979 and 1980 teams and spent fi ve years in the NBA after college. Prior to UW, Romar served as the head coach at Saint Louis (1999-02) and Pepperdine (1996-99) and was an assistant coach at (1992-96). He helped lead the Bruins to the 1995 national title. Romar s influence extends beyond the college court as he is on the USA Basketball Men s Junior National Committee, starting in 2009 and running through 2016. A native of Compton, Calif., he graduated from Pius X. Romar and his wife, Leona, have three daughters: Terra, Tavia and Taylor. Unprecedented Success Under Romar The Huskies are enjoying their greatest stretch of success in team history under the direction of Lorenzo Romar. Besides three Sweet 16 appearances, three Pac-10 tournament championships, two regular-season conference titles & three NIT appearances -- including the 2012 semifi nals -- the numbers show Romar has entered unchartered territory.
