Bulldogs Struggle at Winthrop Asics Classic Brendan Kight led The Citadel men for the fifth consecutive week while Sarah Strickland paced the women as The Citadel cross country teams competed at the 2008 Winthrop Asics Classic in Rock Hill. The men s team finished third while the women finished fourth. Kight, a junior from Sumter, ran 20:29 in the 6k race as he finished 19th overall. Kight has been the top finisher for the Bulldogs in every meet this season. The women s team struggled without top runner Katheryn Gatewood, who had led the team in every meet this season. Senior Sarah Strickland led the Bulldogs with a time of 16:02 in the 4k race, placing 14th. Anderson, Gay Set Personal Records at FLRunners.com Invitational Alex Anderson and Suzanne Gay set personal records as the duo were two of the 14 Bulldogs to post season-best times at the FLRunners.com Invitational on Oct. 3 in Titusville, Fla. Anderson ran 28:04 and was the third finisher for the men while Gay ran 20:50 and finished fifth on the team for the women. Katheryn Gatewood led the women and Brendan Kight led the men for the third meet this season. Bulldogs Weather the Heat at Navy s Salty Seadog Invitational Katheryn Gatewood led the women s team with a 6k time of 25:35 while Brendan Kight led the men for the second straight week with an 8k time of 27:28 as The Citadel cross country teams competed at the Salty Seadog Invitational hosted by the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis Saturday morning. The women s team finished 12th while the men s team placed 14th. Temperatures rose to the low 90s with a high humidity for the meet, something The Citadel and Southern Conference foe Furman took in stride but many of the northern schools struggled with throughout the day. Juniors Lead at Eye Opener Junior Brendan Kight led the Bulldogs overall with a time of 27:11 and finishing 34th as The Citadel cross country teams opened the 2008 cross country season at the Eye Opener Meet in Spartanburg. Junior Katheryn Gatewood led the women with a time of 20:02, placing 59th. runner for The Citadel, passed away Sunday, Sept. 7 from a hit and run that occurred the previous Thursday evening in Columbia. Wilson had just recently turned 24. Wilson was riding his bicycle in Columbia when he was hit by a vehicle. The driver left the scene of the accident but turned himself into police hours later. When he graduated in 2007, Wilson was in The Citadel record books multiple times, running the anchor leg of the second-fastest indoor distance medley relay team in school history. Wilson also holds the ninth-best 3,000m steeplechase performance in school history, running 9:47.32 at the Military Championships at VMI on March 31, 2007. The Citadel Men Picked Ninth, Women Picked 10th for the 2008 Southern Conference Cross Country Season The Citadel men s cross country team was picked to finish ninth while the women were tabbed to finish 10th in a poll of the Southern Conference coaches, announced Tuesday afternoon by the SoCon Office. Both teams placed eighth at the 2007 SoCon Cross Country Championships. The Citadel women s team boasts a wealth of experience with three academic seniors and a pair of juniors that have all run some of the fastest times in school history.
