Page 1 Alfalfa County Cooperative Extension News August September 2018 New contest at Oklahoma State Fair to showcase 4-H creativity Although Oklahoma is still dealing with hot summer weather, preparations for the Oklahoma State Fair also are heating up and will feature a new 4-H contest in September. The Cupcake Wars competition was a big hit in its inaugural appearance at the 2017 Oklahoma State Fair, with 32 teams competing. Building on that momentum, club members this year have the opportunity to participate in the first-ever Fruit/Vegetable Sculpting/Arrangements contest slated Sept. 23 in Oklahoma City. Jim Rhodes, West District 4-H program specialist for Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension, said this new competition falls right in line with the programming goals of the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development Program. Everything we do in 4-H provides club members with opportunities to learn life skills such as public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork, said Rhodes, who serves as superintendent of the 4-H division at the Oklahoma State Fair. In this new competition, participants will have to think quickly on their feet, communicate with team members, plan their design and be prepared to present their creations to the judges. Each team will have 30 minutes to prepare the dish/ sculpture, clean up the preparation area and be ready to talk to the judges. Teams comprised of two or three members can bring one photo no larger than 8x10 inches of what they are going to create, along with their presentation scripts. There will be three heats of 10 teams each. In addition, teams also will practice proper food safety and be prepared to discuss food safety practices they used while creating their entry during the group s presentation to the judges. Team members will discuss two of the major nutrients in the foods they used, as well as talk about food preparation principles. No electricity will be available during the contest, so teams should make their recipe selection with this in mind. The neat thing about this is seeing the amazing creativity these 4-H ers have. Last year at the first Cupcake Wars, I was blown away at what these teams created out of plain cupcakes and some frosting. They really did think outside of the box, he said. Adding this new competition of carving and arranging fruits and vegetables I can only imagine what they ll come up with in the new contest. The competition is limited to the first 30 teams to register. Registration, which is $15 per team, will be open Aug. 1-31, or until the spots are filled. Please contact Rhodes at 580-233-5295 or jim.rhodes@okstate.edu for additional information. Registration checks should be made payable to the West District OSU Cooperative Extension and mailed to Jim Rhodes, West District OSU Cooperative Extension 4-H Program Specialist, 205 W. Maple, Suite 510, Enid, OK 73701. If you re going to be at the Oklahoma State Fair, make a point to stop by the Oklahoma Expo Hall to see these 4-H ers in action, Rhodes said. If you can t be there Sept. 23, consider coming by Sept. 22 as our club members compete in the second Cupcake Wars competition. Take some time to browse through the building and see all of the 4-H exhibits while you re at it. Seeing all of the exhibits gives everyone a better understanding of the variety of projects available in 4-H. We truly offer something for everyone. Oklahoma State University, U. S.
