Wilson led the team with six birdies on Saturday. He shot a bogey free 32 (-3) on the front nine and a 1-under 34 on the back. Keenan Huskey finished T-9th in his second SEC Championship appearance after shooting 3-under for the tournament. The Greenville, S.C., native shot a 2-under 68 on Saturday. After posting three bogeys on the front nine. Huskey was bogey free down the backstretch with two birdies. He leads the team this season with 20 rounds of par or better. Huskey surpassed a single-season high set last season with his sixth top-10 finish of the year today. Sophomore Scott Stevens carded a 1-over 71 to finish T-23rd in his second career appearance at the conference meet. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, was 1-over heading into the final nine holes and shot 35 (E) on the back nine. He made a huge eight foot birdie putt on the Par 3 17th. Sophomore Will Miles made the turn at 6-over today but bounced back in a big way on the back nine, grinding out a 1-under 34 with three birdies. The Hilton Head Island, S.C., native, T-53rd at 11-over par. Fellow sophomore Ryan Stachler shot an 81 (+11) in the third round to finish T-64th. Both players were making their SEC Championship debuts. No. 3 Vanderbilt shot a final round 272 (-8) to run away with first place in the stroke play portion of the event and earn the top seed in match play. No. 15 Texas A&M was the runner-up at 5-under. No. 7 LSU shot 3-under and fended off the sixth-ranked Gators for third. 18th-ranked Alejandro Tosti of Florida took home medalist honors after defeating 12th ranked Patrick Martin of Vanderbilt in a sudden-death playoff on the second hole. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- It was a back-and-forth battle all morning as South Carolina came up just short in the SEC Match Play Quarterfinals, falling to No. 6 Florida 3-2 on Sunday. Sophomore Scott Stevens (2&1) and sophomore Ryan Stachler (3&2) each won their matches, while sophomore Will Miles upset bid versus individual stroke play champion Alejandro Testi fell short on the 20th hole of the round in a sudden death playoff. Stevens shot 1-over on the backside, where Carolina started the day, and was one down for six straight holes before squaring his match after a birdie on the par-3 third. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native, was in command down the stretch and went 2-up after a birdie on hole six. Gordon Neale took advantage of an errant tee shot and pulled back within one with two holes left in the match. Stevens stripped his tee shot down the middle of the fairway on eight and stuck his approach within 3 feet of the pin. Neale conceded the birdie putt to Stevens and he won the match 2&1 on the 17th hole of play. Ryan Stachler bounced back from a tough third round in stroke play nearly leading wire-to-wire in his win vs. Jorge Garcia. The Alpharetta, Ga., native dropped a shot on the opening hole but squared the match back up on hole 11 with a par. He then took back control and won the next two holes with consecutive pars to take a 2-up lead. Stachler led by two or more the rest of the way. After a great approach from the bunker, he won 3&1 with a par on hole seven. Miles gave 18th-ranked Tosti all he could handle the entire day in one of the most entertaining matches of the quarterfinals. Tosti went 2-up early with a par on hole 14. Miles then squared the match with consecutive birdies on 16 and 17. He went 1-up early on the back nine with a birdie on the par-4 second hole, but Testi answered with a birdie on the par-3 third to square the match back up. They shot even par down the stretch in the final six holes, heading to a sudden death playoff back on the 10th tee. Each player carded par on the 10th and Testi won the match 1-up with a par on the 12th hole. Freshman Jamie Wilson fought tooth and nail with No. 22 Sam Horsfield. The Mount Pleasant, S.C., native, who was fresh off a career-best 66 in the third round of stroke play on Saturday, trailed by two with two holes to play after gaining a shot back with a birdie on the par-5 7th. Wilson hit a great shot out of the greenside bunker on the right, but he was unable to hole out for birdie. Horsfield, who is the No. 3 ranked amateur in the world, took the match after sinking a 50-footer for birdie. Junior Keenan Huskey, who was battling an arm injury, was unable to get things going on Sunday in his match versus Andy Zhang. He trailed for most of the day but made things interesting late. He won two holes down the stretch and like Wilson, was two-down with two holes left to play. Huskey was unable to get the birdie he needed on hole eight and Zhang won the match. SEC QUARTERFINALS 1. 2007 NCAA West Regional Champions South Carolina finishes 44-under-par to set course record en route to program s first regional title TEMPE, Ariz. Behind a record-breaking performance, the South Carolina men s golf team claimed a two-stroke victory over UCLA to win the 2007 NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course (Par 72, 7,057 yards) in Tempe, Ariz. The Gamecocks recorded a three-round score of 820 to finish 44 strokes under par and set a course record. The guys were focused all week and nothing fazed them, South Carolina associate head coach Bill McDonald said. I kept talking about winning the tournament, not so much advancing (to the NCAA finals). I wanted them to taste victory. I felt like we were good enough to win earlier in the season. We had some opportunities and didn t get it done. I am proud of the effort they gave. South Carolina entered the final round one stroke behind regional leader and No. 4 UCLA. The Gamecocks shot 10-under par (278) as a team Saturday to beat the Bruins, who were seven under (281). No. 10 Southern California and No. 18 Arizona State, the regional host, shared third place with a final score of 824 (-40). Fellow Southeastern Conference team Vanderbilt caught fire on Saturday, finishing the third round at 21 under to surge into fifth place. It was the first regional title for the Gamecocks, who reached the top 10 in three of the previous four NCAA Regionals. In 1999, South Carolina fell just shy of the East Regional title, finishing second in Barrington, R.I., despite Kyle Thompson s individual victory at the event. The Gamecocks, who entered the tournament as the No. 11 seed, held a slight lead on UCLA for most of the final day, and freshman George Bryan IV s strong finish secured the win. The last player on the course for South Carolina, Bryan eagled No. 17 and sank a 40-foot putt for birdie on No. 18. The Chapin, S.C, product tied for 10th individually with a three-day total of 68-67-69=204 (-12). His tournament total of 204 tied him for fourth place in school history for a three-round individual score and was the best individual performance ever by a Gamecock in regional play. Bryan s 10th-place finish was the best by a Carolina golfer since Thompson won the 2001 NCAA West Regional in Corvalis, Ore. Sophomore Florian Fritsch and junior Mark Anderson tied for 16th on the individual leader board after posting three-day totals of 206 (-10), which tied for the eighth-best three-round effort in school history. Anderson closed with a 70 (-2) on the final 18 holes, while Fritsch carded a 71 (-1) Saturday. Sophomore Mark Silvers III fired a final round 69, and junior Warren Thomas posted a 70 on the final 18 holes. Silvers and Thomas both tied for 43rd with a three-day total score of 211 (-5). I noticed early on that both teams (South Carolina and UCLA) seemed tight, McDonald said. It really helped us that Mark Silvers got off to such a good start. He made a couple of birdies early and made the turn at 32 (four under par). I think when our guys started to see the board and that we had a lead, that really helped. We got a burst of energy on the back nine knowing we had a chance to win. As a team, South Carolina opened with a George Bryan IV NCAA HISTORY Warren Thomas, Mark Silvers III, coach Bill McDonald, Florian Fritsch, Mark Anderson, George Bryan IV, assistant coach Michael Burcin. The team victory was the first for South Carolina since capturing the title at the 2005 Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-16). In 2007, the Gamecocks previous best performance was fourth place on three occasions. I told the team in a meeting a little while ago that this will mean more to them as the years go by, McDonald said of winning the title. It will really mean a lot. To me, it gives our program validity. Instead of just talking about what we want to do, we went out and did it. It will really help from a recruiting and coaching standpoint.
