For starters, I want to welcome new members: Larry Ellis, Tracy da Silla and Dan Balma. I also want to thank all those that showed up for the tour of the rubber dam. We had a total of about 15 people make the trek. It turned out to be quite interesting. Thanks to Jay also for making all the arrangement. After the tour several member including: Paul, Sonny, Jay, Chris and me headed down to Hunter Ligget to scarf up on all the trout left over from the Trout Derby. The club helped sponsor the event and those who made the trek were well rewarded. I did note that a couple of our members may be in need of fishing lessons, or more correctly catching lessons. Looking ahead to this month s meeting Dave Hilbert has contacted Hank Smith from the Carmel River Steelhead Association and he will be our guest speaker. So please come out and join in. There are two future event coming up that I wanted to mention. First, be sure to mark your calendar for this year s Annual Muddy River Classic Barbeque on July 10th. Participation is what makes this fun, so please invite friends and family. Looking way out to October, we ll be having Lee Haskins doing a program on striper fishing. I mention it now because he is planning a hands-on clinic on October 16th. So mark that on your calendar too! Let s see, anything else? Oh yeh Roger got skunked opening day! Carmel River Steelhead Association t ll next time...dave The Carmel Steelhead Association (CRSA),from its roots dating back to 1974, evolved from a Conservation group consisting mainly of fishermen to the leading advocate for preserving the Carmel River Wild Steelhead. Its primary goal is to return the Carmel River watershed to as natural a state as possible so that it will maintain an annual adult run of adult steelhead in excess of 2000 fish. If you think that this is an uphill battle, you re probably right. If you d like to know why it s an important battle, well then how about taking a little time away from the TV on Wednesday night, meet Hank Smith from CRSA, enjoy some fishy comradery and maybe win some goodies from the raffle...ed

Page 2 Fly Times What s going on in the world of fishing? Who s been fishing? Fly of the month: Peacock Caddis 52 Weeks of California Fly-Fishing 1. Martis Creek Reservoir 2. Indian Creek Reservoir 1. Martis Creek Reservoir Despite its somewhat austere shoreline of gravel and sagebrush, Martis is a flyfisher's dream. The lake is a veritable soup of insects, scuds, snails and baitfish: perfect for growing big trout fast. A strict zero kill, catch and release policy insures that the trout can grow to trophy size and naturally replenish the lake with wild fish. The feeder streams are closed to any kind of fishing to protect the spawners and fingerlings. A quiet lakeside campground and close proximity to the amenities of Truckee and Lake Tahoe make Martis an ideal destination.first lake inducted into the California Wild Trout system. Martis is typically fished with small gray midge imitations. As soon as the water temperatures break fifty degrees, the famous Martis blood midges begin to hatch. Martis has had its ups and downs but it s my top pick for this month. Many California reservoirs are built for a variety of purposes, including flood control, water storage, domestic water supply and irrigation. Indian Creek was built for another reason - to receive tertiary treated reclaimed waste water from the South Tahoe Public Utility District from the late 1960's to 1989.The reservoir no longer receives treated waste water, since all reclaimed water is now stored during the winter in Harvey Place Reservoir, downstream from Indian Creek. The reservoir now receives its water through a diversion from the West Fork of the Carson River. Pattern: Peacock Caddis Hook: TMC 100 (standard dry fly hook) Thread: 6/0 Black Body: Twisted peacock herl Hackle: Mixed brown, Grizzly or Cree Wing: Yan elk hair (tent style) 2. Indian Creek Reservoir This lake is getting better and better despite the recent years of low water. The water level has come up a bit from last year. It has a great camp ground that it s an easy walk to the lake. There are loads of Rainbow and Brown trout that will range up well over 20 inches. Be sure to take a float tube or pontoon boat. As for other equipment: A 5-6 weight rod rigged with and clear intermediate line is a good mainstay. The fish can be down deep this time of year so a type II or III is not a bad idea and a dry line can also work well for the shallows and for when fish are cruising on top. Best patterns: Small (#10-12) olive, black, purple Wooly Buggers, black and red midge patterns and a variety of small nymphs. The camp ground opens May 7th. But, the campground road is due for paving, so call ahead (775) 885-6000..
