FROM THE NURSE: March is full of health happenings. Here are just a few you and your student might want to investigate. Opened in August of 2013, the clinic is a joint partnership between Hutto ISD and Lone Star Circle of Care to serve students and employees of all Hutto ISD campuses. Students are encouraged to stop by and pick-up new patient packets to complete prior to needing services. With paperwork and a consent on file, students can access medical and behavioral health services without a parent coming to the appointment. If you have health insurance, LSCC will bill your insurance for services provided. No health insurance? No problem. We can help determine if you qualify for Medicaid/CHIP, and if so, we can assist with the application. If you do not qualify, discounted rates are available based on income. Once you turn 18, you must sign an adult consent form (before your 19th birthday) to have your IMMTRAC status updated. Without this update, you can no longer access this valuable tool. Please come see the nurse ASAP to sign the adult consent. http://hhs.hipponation.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?urec_id=133162&type=d&prec_id=staff Check out the above link on the HHS website! PROM / Project Celebration: Statistics show that Prom-Graduation season - the months of April, May and June - is the most dangerous time for teens. One-third of the alcohol-related traffic fatalities involving teens each year occur during those months. To help keep our students safe after prom, PTSA, SADD, and the Class of 2015 are partnering to host Project Celebration this year. Students will ride the bus from The Radisson to Project Celebration. Once there, students will have the option of playing casino games, playing volleyball, basketball, and continue to dance the night away. Concessions will be available for purchase. The cost of a ticket is $25. If students purchase both Project Celebration and Prom tickets at the same time, they can get a $10 discount on prom ticket. Project Celebration will be at the: Premier Athletic Sports Complex 8220 183A Toll Rd Leander, TX 78641 If you have further questions, please contact Dana Rivas.

LOVE AND LOGIC Tips for Win-Win Parent-Teacher Conferences: One of the toughest challenges faced by today's teachers involves working with Helicopter Parents. While they do it out of great love, these parents cripple their children by hovering over them and rescuing them from the consequences of their actions. Unwittingly, they also sabotage their children's learning by criticizing teachers for expecting too much out of their kids. We've seen countless Helicopter Parents transformed by skillful, patient teachers. In his CD set Putting Parents at Ease, Jim Fay my dad teaches a variety of tips for building relationships with such parents so that everybody wins. Listed below is a sampling of these tips: Remember that parents who look angry and resistant are usually hurting inside. When we remember this, it becomes much easier to avoid becoming defensive or angry ourselves. The most powerful skill involves listening and allowing parents to vent about their frustrations before sharing our ideas. "Tell me more." "What would you like to see here?" or "How long have you felt this way?" are great responses to show parents how much you care and to get them talking. Share your ideas only after making sure that the parent is ready. Asking, "Would you like to hear my thoughts on this?" is a good way of showing respect and testing to see if they are ready to listen. NOTE: These ideas also work great with angry spouses! Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.
