Friday! Friday! Friday! By Sean Maxfield Amazing! That s what Zane Martin, 8, said about 3rd Friday, an exciting and fun way for children to spend a Friday night every month here at the Long Center. The ice cream and the swimming pool are amazing, Zane said. For his ice cream sundae at 3rd Friday, Zane chose syrup, whipped cream, and gummy bears. There was also pizza and even some dancing. Paul Roskey, a recreation programmer at the LC, is now the main man behind 3rd Friday. Roskey gave me the rundown of what you need to know before you go. It starts at 6 pm and goes to 10 pm on the third Friday of every month, Roskey said. It costs $15 with a rec. card and $17 without a rec. card. Roskey said kids from 1st grade thru 8th grade are the right age for 3rd Friday. Parents can pick their kids up entering thru the front doors which will be monitored even when the building is locked at 7 pm, so everybody is safe and sound. Roskey advises that if parents want to pick their kids up early, they need to let someone at the Long Center know beforehand. Roskey said that all the kids need to worry about bringing is a bathing suit and a towel because swimming will always be available with our indoor pool. Lifeguards will also be there to help and watch over the kids. Courtney Schultz, a frequent-newsletter-cameo correspondent and recreation leader, is Paul s right-hand woman for 3rd Friday. She talked about what kids can look forward to when it comes to this special occasion. We play all sorts of games, Schultz said. We have pizza parties and ice cream parties. We go swimming. Every once in a while, we have a movie night with popcorn, candy, and a movie like from Redbox. She also has plans for more themes that include pajama parties, superheroes, Halloween, and other holidays that will be incorporated into the 3rd Friday extravaganzas to come. I allow Courtney to pick the themes, Roskey said. Schultz said one 3rd Friday included making holiday slime using Elmer s glue, contact solution, food coloring, and water. But, in the words of Reading Rainbow s LeVar Burton, don t take our word for it when it comes to 3rd Friday. I went on the scene for a kid s-eye view. Zaylee Martin, 11, said she really liked the swimming at 3rd Friday because that is exactly what she likes to do. I liked it, Zaylee said. It was really fun. Ahmad Jackson Jr., 7, experienced his first 3rd Friday in January. His favorite thing to do was playing on the courts. Because I like to play basketball, Ahmad said. When asked if he would like to do 3rd Friday again, Ahmad said a double Yes! He also enjoyed eating pizza and ice cream that was provided by the LC staf f. When it comes to toppings on his ice cream, Ahmad said he likes all of them, especially gummy bears. I like everything, Ahmad said. Gage Nix, 12, also liked playing basketball in the gym. He said he would definitely do 3rd Friday again. It was lit, Gage said. In case you don t know, lit basically means it was something very great or an awesome experience. Schultz summed up the 3rd Friday experience for everybody involved. 3rd Friday is about kids having a fun-filled night and about parents getting to have a fun night out as well, Schultz said. Sorry, parents. You will have to get your own pizza, lol. For more info or updates on 3rd Friday, check out The Long Center newsletter at the front desk or online at myclearwater.com. In memoriam: Remembering Elsie-Elsie Goodman was a regular patron who loved the Long Center. She said she felt better every time she could go in the pool. I can remember when she gave me some sandwich crackers, and I got a chance to interview her for the newsletter. I was told she passed away the week/day of Sat., Jan. 27, 2018. She was a good, generous woman and a big part of the Long Center family. She was a friend to many staf f and patrons here, including me: I am blessed and thankful to be able to come to the Long Center. My visits enhance the pleasure of my life. Elsie Goodman We will miss you, Elsie. Thank you!!!!
