Senior guard Dani Crandall scored a career-high 36 points, which is the most by a Laker since Niki Reams poured in 37 points against Northern Michigan back on Feb. 26, 2005. The Lakers turned in their best defensive performance of the year as well. GVSU held the Timberwolves to 29 percent (20-of-69) from the field. Offensively, the Lakers shot 41 percent (23-of-56), converted 19-of-29 freebies and scored 36 points in the paint. The Lakers led by four points (54-50) with only 2:44 remaining in regulation, but Northwood scored the game's next five points to go ahead one minute and 20 seconds later. Crandall cut what wound up being a three-point deficit to just one with a layup in the closing seconds. Lauren Robak split a pair of free throws with 11 ticks left on the clock, which put GVSU in a position to tie the game on its final possession. Crandall drove to the rim, drew a foul and made two freebies to tie the game at 60-60 with two seconds to go. The Lakers never trailed in overtime and held Northwood to 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) from the floor. Crandall scored eight of GVSU's 10 points in overtime. Freshman forward Kayla Dawson also recorded her fourth double-double of the campaign with 13 points and 11 rebounds. More News and Notes ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS Senior guard DANI CRANDALL scored a career-high 36 points in GVSU s victory over Northwood. She knocked down 11 field goals, which were the second-most by a Laker this season. Her performance matched Julie Zeeff and Marie Thomas for the sixth-most points in a single game. Zeeff s 36-point night came on Jan. 2, 2003 versus Wayne State, while Thomas came against Hillsdale on Feb. 5, 1994. THE RULE OF 10 Sophomore center JILL STEINMETZ grabbed 10 rebounds to match her career-high in the Lakers win over Lake Superior State last week. Steinmetz also grabbed 10 boards in victories over then-no. 12 Lews on Nov. 30, 2013 and at Tiffin on Dec. 15, 2013. THE DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE, TAKE TWO For the second time this season, freshman forward KAYLA DAWSON and senior guard DANI CRANDALL recorded a double-double in the same game. Dawson scored 13 points and grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds, while Crandall racked up 36 points and collected 10 rebounds to lead GVSU past Northwood. SOMETHING WE HAVEN T SEEN MUCH OF Freshman forward PIPER TUCKER knocked down all four of her three-point shots and went 6-of-7 from the field to score a career-high 18 points against Lake Superior State. Tucker became the first Laker to shoot 100 percent from beyond the arc since Erin Cyplik accomplished the same feat on Feb. 2, 2008 at Ashland. FANTASTIC IN FEBRUARY Senior guard DANI CRANDALL is averaging 21.7 points in the month of February. The reigning GLIAC North Division Player of the Week currently ranks fourth among all conference players with at least 200 field-goal attempts. ENJOYING THE STARTING FIVE Freshman guard TAYLOR LUTZ dished out 11 assists in GVSU s pair of victories last week. The Granger, Ind. native set a new career-high with six helpers in the Lakers win over Northwood. She is also second in the GLIAC in assist to turnover ratio (2.7). THE BLOCK PARTY IS BACK IN TOWN Sophomore center JILL STEINMETZ set a new career-high with four blocks to help GVSU top Northwood last Saturday. PUTTING IN OVERTIME It may have taken five extra minutes, but the Lakers topped Northwood 70-67. The last time GVSU went to overtime was back on Dec. 1, 2012, when it defeated Lake Erie 57-52.
