This is the first time that SJU and Temple have met in the Atlantic 10 title game, but it s not the first conference championship game played between the two schools, as both were members of the Middle Atlantic Conference and then the East Coast Conference (full history on pg. 3). The Hawks were also the fifth seed the last time that SJU advanced to the A-10 final in 2006. Rob Ferguson now owns the SJU school record for games played with 133. Pat Calathes tops the Hawks in scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.6) and is second assists (2.7). This is the sixth time the Hawks have won at least 20 games under Phil Martelli and the first time it s happened since 2004-05 (24-12). Saint Joseph s and Temple have split the series this year, with each team winning by a one-point margin. HAWKS LINEUP 07-08 Stats Last Game PROBABLE STARTERS Yr. Ht. 2007-08 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI Now in his 13th year at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene, while earning his place among the top coaches in the school s storied history. Martelli reached a significant milestone in 2006-07, when he surpassed Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second place on the school s all-time list for wins. His 13-year career mark now stands at 261-150, while he ranks fourth in career winning percentage (.635) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season (30) in 2004, Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories six times in 13 seasons. More impressively, his teams have gone 180-79 in the past eight seasons, an average of 23 wins per year. He is 132-76 in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A- 10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken SJU to the postseason in six of the last seven years, and eight times in his 12 seasons. Guiding a young squad in 2006-07, the Hawks went 18-14, marking the eighth time that he has led them to 18 or more wins. Martelli turned in a top-notch coaching performance in 2005-06, as the Hawks went from a 10-12 record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. That effort was similar to 2004-05 where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in 2003-04, when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA firstround draft picks from the 03-04 squad that went 30-2, the 2004-05 Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish 24-12. Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 12 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. In 2003-04, Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight, falling two points shy of the Final Four. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season (1995-96) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, Pa., in 1976-77. He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, and helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. As a player, he was part of Wi d e n e r s NCAA To u rnament teams in both 1974-75 and 1975-76, serving as team co-captain as a senior. Martelli has added a new title to his resumé, that of "author." The coach has cowritten a book, "Don't Call Me Coach: A Lesson Plan for Life" with Harold Gullan, Ph.D, which was published in the fall of 2007. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Robert Morris University, and Elizabeth is a junior attending Saint Joseph s. 2007-08 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - A-10 TOURNAMENT LAST TIME OUT: For the second time in eight days, Saint Joseph s upset nationally-ranked Xavier, using a stellar defensive effort to earn the 61-53 win in the A-10 semfinal. Pat Calathes led the way with 24 points and a career-best five 3-pointers, while Ahmad Nivins had 15 points. Nivins set the pace early, scoring nine of the Hawks first 11 points. SJU scored 15 consecutive points from the end of the first half into the early part of the second en route to its biggest lead of the game. The Hawks limited Xavier to 37 percent shooting, which included just one basket outside the paint and 1-for-14 shooting from 3- point range. The Musketeers closed to 54-49 with 1:15 to play, but Calathes took an inbounds pass the length of the court for a dunk to seal the win. Rob Ferguson added 11 points, while Calathes had a team-high eight rebounds. FINAL GOAL: The Hawks are making their fifth appearance in the A-10 conference final and the first since 2006. Saint Joseph s lost in the 2006 championship game to Xavier and dropped the 2005 final to GW. SJU s last title came in 1997, when it defeated Rhode Island at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The Hawks are 2-2 in the league championship, having also won the title in 1986. FOUR TO SCORE: The last team to win four games in the A-10 Tournament was Xavier in 2006, when it defeated Saint Joseph s in the final game. RUBBER GAME: The Hawks and Owls split the season series this year with two thrillers. SJU won the first one at Temple, 68-67, on Pat Calathes 3- pointer with 3.9 seconds to play. Temple came out ahead in the second game, 57-56, on Mark Tyndale s layup with :21 to go. STORIED HISTORY: This is the first time that Saint Joseph s and Temple have met for the Atlantic 10 title. But it s not the first time that the two schools have met for a conference championship. The two schools were members of the Middle Atlantic Conference and then the East Coast Conference before joining the Atlantic 10. Here s the rundown of the Hawks-Owls championship series (title games only): 1969 MAC: SJU 68- TU 67 (Palestra) 1970 MAC: TU 63- SJU 59 (Palestra) 1972 MAC: TU 65- SJU 57 (Palestra) 1973 MAC: SJU 70- TU 60 (Palestra) 1979 ECC: TU 61- SJU 60 (Palestra) MARTELLI AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP: There s one common thread in the two Atlantic 10 titles won by Saint Joseph s (1986 and 1997), and it s that Phil Martelli was a part of both of them. Martelli was an assistant coach under the late Jim Boyle during the 1986 title run and then after taking over as head coach in 1995-96, led Saint Joseph s to its second crown in 1997. TITLE TALES: SJU s last A-10 title came in 1997 as the top-seeded (East Division) Hawks defated St. Bonaventure, George Washington and Rhode Island to win the tournament at the Spectrum. Rashid Bey was named the Most Outstanding Player. In the 1986 tournament, top-seeded Saint Joseph s defeated Penn State, Duquesne and West Virginia to win the title, while Greg Mullee was named the MOP. FRIENDLY FOES: Phil Martelli and Fran Dunphy are very good friends and share a passion for their work in the community. The coaches are co-chairs of the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer effort, which is one of the nation s highest fundraising groups for Coaches vs. Cancer. The group, which is comprised of the city s six Division I coaches and their wives, raised over $800,000 last year and have set a goal of $1 million this year. The next event is this Monday when all of the coaches gather for a March Madness Tip-Off breakfast at the Palestra, which is attended by hundreds. DEE-FENSE: The Hawks have stepped up their defense in this tournament. They limited Richmond to 37 percent shooting and forced 15 turnovers.
