Editor- Barbara Troncone Website: www.sorrentotennis.myclub.org.au From the Committee Happy New Year to all and a special welcome to our new members. We hope everyone enjoyed the past year and is looking forward to another great year of tennis. We would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers, coaches and sponsors for their great contributions to the club in the past year and hope that 2018 will be a memorable one for all our members. Thanks also to all players for their sportsmanship and camaraderie and a special thanks to the parents of junior players for their help and contribution to the club. We have a great club and hope that all our members take pride in it and help to keep it that way. Any suggestions to improve our 1 facilities or streamline our operations are always welcome. A special thankyou to committee member Alex Williams who has performed the role of Social Event Organiser but has had to resign from the position due to other commitments. The committee would warmly welcome anyone interested in filling this vacant position. Please contact Anna Thrumble or any committee member if you think you may be able to fill this role. Congratulations to our president Anthony De Silva and his new bride Jayne (Bullock) on their recent wedding. Anthony De Silva and Jayne Bullock got married on 17 Dec 2017

Calendar of Events A calendar of events to July 2018 has been prepared and is available on our club website. Adults are reminded that the Tuesday night adult social tennis is in full swing and it is the best time to play in summer, so please come along. Saturday social tournaments with prizes of wine and chocolates will be held monthly whenever possible and members and visitors are encouraged to participate. Family fun nights will also be organised monthly whenever possible. All members will be regularly notified of upcoming events by email so please check all the club emails you receive. The Mixed Doubles Spring Tournament held on Sunday 27 th August and sponsored by E-Solar, was a great success with 48 entries and fine sunny weather throughout. Feedback was very positive and all players appeared to greatly enjoy the playing format, good food and the generous prizes. The net income from the tournament and bar sales was about $2,000. A huge thank you to all the volunteers for their magnificent efforts. We hope to make this tournament a regular feature of our club calendar in coming years. the bar and a great afternoon was enjoyed by all. Thanks to all the hard-working volunteers who contributed to the event. The Family Fun Night held on 10 th November 2017 was well attended with over 70 adults and children. The coaches organised activities for the children while the adults played social. The sausage sizzle was very popular and the bar sales also did very well. A great time was had by all. Thanks again to all the helpers and participants for making it a successful event. The Club Christmas Party on Friday 8 th December with pizza was a great success with about 60 adults and 50 children attending. David Buckoski starring as Santa was also a great hit even though he was a trifle slim compared to normal Santas. The pizza was eagerly snapped up and the bar did a roaring trade. Once again many thanks to all the volunteers for making the party a great success. Our Quiz Night on Friday 1 September attracted about 60 participants (8 tables), with Joel Moss again doing a great job as the Quiz Master. A great night was had by all and the winning table aptly included Silvio Borraccino, our sponsor for the Mixed Doubles Tournament held in August. Thanks again to all the volunteers, especially Joel for his sterling efforts. Open Day on Saturday 1 October 2017 was attended by about 50 adults and children. The coaches organised activities for the children while adults played social tennis. The tea-break at 3 pm included a large spread of tasty food and was followed by speeches and presentation of four Winter League Shields. Our President, Anthony de Silva introduced the proceedings and speeches were made by Troy Pickard, the retiring Mayor of the City of Joondalup, Tony Krysticevic, the MLA for Carine, and Graeme Hall of Tennis West. The Club Patron Mel O Neil then declared the new tennis season open. Social play was followed by a happy hour at 2 Anzac day Breakfast As in the past, the Anzac Day breakfast will be held next year at our club on Thursday 2 April to commemorate and honour Norm Knell and other deceased past club members who made significant contribution to our club. There will be a commemorative service at 8 am around the flagpole at our club followed by social tennis and a hot breakfast then more tennis play. All are welcome and the cost will be $10 per adult or $25 for a family. Please come along with your family and friends and help us to celebrate this special event. Please enter your name and number of attendees on the club list or contact Anna Thrumble, a committee member or club employee if you would like to attend.

Anzac Day Thursday 25 April 2018 Anzac service at 8am Hot breakfast and Social tennis $10/person or $25/family Planned Clubhouse Renovations in 2018 The refurbishments to our club that are being funded by the City of Joondalup will commence at the end of April 2018 and hopefully will be completed by October of the same year. The current player area, toilets and bar will be closed off for some time while renovations take place. Alternative outdoor temporary storage and portable toilets will be available. The Pro-Shop, Creche and part of the hall area will still be available for players. There may be considerable disruption to club activities and all members, coaches, staff and visitors are asked to be patient and assist where possible. Improvements will include rendering of brickwork, painting, tiling and renovation of change rooms, bar, storerooms and lighting. The plans showing the proposed renovations are on display on the board at the south end of the players area. Members will be regularly updated with information from the City and the Builders. 2018 Junior State Tournament The 2018 City of Joondalup Junior Hardcourt Tournament will be held from Saturday 1 to Tuesday 17 th April 2018 and will be generously sponsored by the City. There will not be any social tennis on Saturday afternoon but courts will be available for Tuesday morning tennis. Arrangements will be made for Saturday afternoon tennis to be played at another club, probably Greenwood Tennis Club. Jenny Scott has kindly agreed to run the kitchen but helpers will be needed to assist her and the office staff. A roster will be posted on the kitchen wall for volunteers to nominate times they are able to help. 2018 Club Championships The 2018 Club Championship events will commence in late March and be played over 2 weekends. The dates are still to be confirmed but junior and adult players should book this event in their calendars and start to look for doubles partners. All members are urged to participate as it is great fun and good for your tennis. Closer to the date, entry forms will be available at the club or may be downloaded from our club website. I hope you are all sitting back and enjoying the Summer of Tennis on the box or enjoying courtside seats at the events. Our ladies Christmas lunches were well attended and enjoyed by all as was our Melbourne Cup lunch which was a while ago now! Our social days are well attended with quite a few new ladies joining us together with some new littlies at the Creche. Thank you to our Creche ladies, Dianne and Linda, for their donation to the Club at our Christmas lunch. Their work is much appreciated by the Club and the Mothers who are able to enjoy their tennis with peace of mind knowing that their children are well looked after. All the best to our summer pennant teams for their run to the finals. Some of us are on struggle street but we will continue the good fight! Looking forward to 2018 and especially the completion of our Club room renovations.
