FROM THE COACH Winter club update from Head Coach Mark Saggers We are now up and running with our winter squads. Training is on every Monday and Friday (4.30pm to 6pm) at Lords in Subiaco. All swimmers are having great fun in the heated pool. The more the merrier so if you are keen to jump in for a winter swim we would love you to come and join us. I would like to introduce a new swimmer to the club Luis Uribe. Luis is committed to training and making nice progress. It s lovely to see the clan of three girls from the Bantock family, two from the Paterson and Mizen families also in the pool. One of our swimmers cannot make up her mind if she wishes to be in plaster casts or in the pool! Poor Zoe Trovato has had a rough run over the last 12 months but luckily, at the moment, she is in the pool. Josh Downes is certainly enjoying the warm winter after being in England for the last 10 years. It is great to see you in the pool Josh. Welcome back Tatenda it s very nice to see you back at Newman Churchlands. Finally, to the strong backbone of the club, the ones who always swim Emily, Patrick, Rebecca, Joel and Ben Yancazos keep up the good work. Squads: GREEN is our introductory squad. Members are introduced to the 3 main strokes, as well as turns, finishes and starts. Less emphasis on butterfly. Squad members will swim approximately 1.5km per session. BRONZE Squad members are introduced to reading sets from the white board. Generally this squad will swim about 2km a session. SILVER Squad members will concentrate on turns, stream lining and race techniques. The 4pm squad will swim approximately 2.5km while the older squad members in the later session will swim 3 to 3.5 km. GOLD Squad is about strength and endurance and is positioned for those swimmers wanting to do open water swimming and take their swimming to the next level. COMMITTEE VALE: PAUL THORP Paul joined the Newman Churchlands Swimming Club committee in 2014 as Vice President. From his first meeting it was clear Thorpy was committed to making the club a great place for the kids to swim, and the work he put in was nothing short of amazing. It didn t matter whether it was for the heating project, the NCSC Evening Dash, Bunnings sausage sizzle or McGowan Relay; he was always available to lend a hand. Paul took on the enormous challenge of making the pool heating a reality and he commit a large amount of time to the task. Two of Paul s many strengths were very evident throughout his professional approach and his ability to talk to people from all levels and walks of life. Meetings with the school, potential suppliers and consultants, whether it was about financial figures depicting the ROI on the investment or where we might need to rout a pipeline, were all handled with ease. Paul achieved in his short time on the committee what people have been trying to do for years, with the heating due to be completed this summer. So many people will benefit from his efforts not only our club members but also the students of Newman College, the children who come to the NCSC Swimming Lessons and the Masters Swimmers. As President, I spoke with Paul regularly, about many things and my lasting recollection is that no matter what we were talking about or how serious the matter, humour was always a part of the conversation. Paul is survived by his wife Michele and their children Molly and Ben, and our thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to them. Vale Paul. Our club is a better place because of you. Swimming Australia JX Awards Congratulations to our swimmers who have been awarded Junior Excellence Awards as part of the Australian Junior Excellence Program (JX). The program recognises, rewards and encourages junior swimmers who achieve a high standard of swimming excellence. Under the program, swimmers aged from 9 to 16 years, who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia, qualify at Gold, Silver, Bronze or Green standard, depending on their best performance/s during the season.
