Tenovus Cancer Care Wales cycle 8 th - 10 th June 2018 Information pack Part 1 Give hope. Help cope. tenovuscancercare.org.uk

Thank you so much for your interest in our North 2 South Wales cycle. We guarantee this spectacular cycle challenge will provide an unforgettable experience, all while raising funds to support cancer patients and their families. thanks! diolch! Taking in three mountain ranges, this circa 220 mile challenge requires a good pair of lungs and a strong pair of legs. From Llandudno, through the mountains of Snowdon and Brecon and into our Welsh capital, the rewards of this challenge are more than worth it; as the scenery promises some of the most stunning Wales has to offer! Darryl Protheroe-Thomas took on the North 2 South Wales Cycle in August 2016 It was only eight weeks from my mum s initial diagnosis to the day she passed away. It was so quick that we didn t really have time to look for support, other than immediate medical attention. What was most difficult, for my dad, especially was that we didn t know who to turn to. It was only years afterwards that I found out that Tenovus Cancer Care could have helped. I chose to fundraise for Tenovus Cancer Care to do something in my mum s name, but also to raise awareness of the charity and how they can help other people who might be in a similar situation. To anyone thinking of taking on this challenge, I d say definitely go for it! You get such a huge sense of achievement from completing the challenge but also in knowing all the money raised goes directly to helping people affected by cancer. And it s helped me a lot too. When I m training, it makes me think of my mum and I train five or six days a week, so I ve been thinking about her a lot. I m proud to say I ve raised over 2,000 for the charity in my mum s name! At first I set myself a target of 1,000 and I ve doubled that! I can t believe how generous people have been!

Return Transport For participants returning to north Wales, we ll arrange transport for you and your bike back up north. If you ve not already requested this, please let us know as soon as possible. Fitness & health considerations This ride is designed to be challenging for those of good health and fitness, but is achievable for most people provided they put in some training in advance. This isn t a race but a test of endurance so you can take the ride at your own pace. This money could pay for five months of vital cancer research by a PhD student in Wales, helping them to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat it. Thank you for helping us to make this possible.

All you need to know Directions We ll provide support vehicles, first aiders and bike mechanics on the day so all you ll need to worry about is pedal power. We ll also supply a map and a GPX log for the entire trip. This can be downloaded prior to the trip on to a suitable GPS device or smart phone etc. Accommodation Please advise if you re travelling with a friend so that we can arrange for you to share. Equipment There s no need to spend a load of cash on equipment for this trip, and borrowing things from friends and family is a great money saver. That said, there s a few things that are really important for you to be able to complete the challenge safely and in comfort, making sure you have a fantastic experience. Luggage Your luggage will be transported for you in our support vehicles. Please make sure your items are in a bag with your name clearly marked on it. Clothing We recommend that everyone follows the principle of layering as the name suggests, lots of layers are better than just the one and gives you flexibility. We d recommend cycle shorts they make a big difference! Cycling gloves are also a good idea for warmth and comfort, especially if it s a bit chilly in the mornings. A warm hat is also important. Be prepared for the weather to be changeable and possibly wet and windy. A windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers should be considered. We recommend lightweight and quick drying, breathable fabrics. Remember, you ll also receive your Tenovus Cancer Care cycling top too!

Bikes As this route is either on roads or surfaced off-road tracks, you ll need a road or hybrid style bike. It should be comfortable and well looked after get it serviced at a local bike store before the challenge. It goes without saying that you should check that your bike is in a roadworthy condition. Pay special attention to your brakes - there are some steep hills on this ride. Please note that although they ll be able to assist with small repairs along the route, the event organisers have no responsibility towards your bikes and equipment throughout the ride. All repairs undertaken externally will be done at your own cost so we strongly suggest that your bike is well maintained. Note: Participants who arrive without vital safety items will be prevented from going on the ride i.e. bike lights, helmet etc. Spares You should bring basic equipment for minor repairs of your bikes i.e. puncture kit/spare inner tubes etc. Although our event organisers will be on hand to help with repairs, they cannot guarantee to have every size and design of spares to accommodate every bike in the group. Helmets Wearing a helmet is compulsory throughout the ride. Accidents are unpredictable and can happen to the most experienced of riders, so you must wear a helmet whenever riding. Your helmet is probably the most important purchase you will make for this event, if you don t already have one.

Checklist of things to bring: Bike - it s a long walk without it! Food - lunch will be supplied on the ride but you may wish to bring some extra snacks to keep your energy up Water - Tenovus Cancer Care will provide water and there are opportunities to buy drinks along the route, but it is always good practice to carry water when cycling Sunglasses - We recommend UVA and UVB protected Sun block Cycle helmet Cycling footwear Cycling clothing Bike spares Socks and spare socks Mobile phone and charger Method to track the route e.g. GPS tracker or mobile phone Battery pack to charge GPS device en route Lock for bike Bike lights Spare money there are a few cafés etc. along the route Small first aid kit and medications (if required) our medical team will be on hand during the event, but will not be able to supply everyone with essential medication A change of clothing and footwear for evenings Toiletries Towel for evening and towel for during the day, or wet wipes Camera Please keep your personal items in a bag with your name clearly marked on it

Thank you! Thank you so much again for taking on this incredible challenge for us.
