Happ (7-3, 4.08) THE OLD COLLEGE TRY: The 2018 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship began on June 1 with 64 teams...the fi nal eight teams will advance to the College World Series from June 16-27 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha...When the tournament began, the O s were represented in the 2018 tournament by alma maters of nine current Orioles players and coaches: INF/DH Pedro Álvarez (Vanderbilt), RHP Kevin Gausman (LSU), OF Craig Gentry (Arkansas), RHP David Hess (Tennessee Tech), RHP Darren O Day (Florida), RHP Mike Wright, Jr. (East Carolina), Hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh (Texas), Bench coach John Russell (Oklahoma), and Manager Buck Showalter (Mississippi State)...In the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the Orioles added seven players currently in this year s tournament... INF Cadyn Grenier (Oregon State, No. 37 overall), RHP Blaine Knight (Arkansas, Round 3), C Cody Roberts (North Carolina, Round 11), INF Trevor Putzig (Tennessee Tech, Round 17), RHP Caleb Kilian (Texas Tech, Round 20), OF Nick Horvath (Florida, Round 25), and INF John Ham (Tennessee Tech, Round 31) are all vying for a College World Series title...one current Oriole has won a national championship at the College World Series...Joey Rickard was a junior outfi elder for the 2012 National Champion Arizona Wildcats. STEADY EDDIE: The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) has selected fi ve baseball legends to be inducted into its Hall of Game as part of their fi fth induction class...this year s class includes Dick Allen, Kenny Lofton, Eddie Murray, James Timothy Mudcat Grant, and James Rodney J.R. Richard...They will be inducted during ceremonies at the Gem Theater in Kansas City tomorrow...murray played 21 seasons, predominantly for the Orioles...With the Orioles, Murray earned three Gold Gloves, two of his three Silver Slugger Awards, and seven of his eight All-Star appearances...helping Baltimore to a World Series victory in 1983, Murray had his number retired by the team in 1998 and was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1999...Just the third player in history to reach 500 home runs and 3,000 hits following Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, Murray was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. YOU RE LOOKING AT THE MAN-NY: SS Manny Machado has hit safely in 48-of-61 games played this season...he currently ranks among league leaders in many offensive categories (see chart at right)...additionally, his.390 on-base percentage ranks seventh in the AL and 13 th in the majors...his.614 slugging percentage ranks fi fth in the majors...his 21 multi-hit games are tied for ninth in the AL and are tied for 15 th in the majors...his 145 total bases rank third in the majors...his eight intentional walks lead the AL and are tied for fi rst in the majors. A WYNNING STRATEGY: On Tuesday night at Citi Field in New York, C Austin Wynns notched a single to left fi eld in the fi rst at-bat of his fi rst Major League game...wynns was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, where he hit.257 (28-for-109) in 32 games this season with four doubles, four home runs, and 16 RBI...According to STATS, LLC., Wynns became the 77 th Orioles player (since 1954) to collect a hit in his Major League debut and the fi rst since Anthony Santander on August 18, 2017 vs. Los Angeles-AL...He became the fi rst to do so in his fi rst plate appearance since Hyun Soo Kim on April 10, 2016 vs. Tampa Bay...Wynns is the fi fth Oriole to make his Major League debut this season, joining LHP Nestor Cortes, Jr., RHP Pedro Araujo, INF Engelb Vielma, and RHP David Hess. GENUINE DRAFT: The Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft was held from June 4-6 at MLB Network s Studio 42 in Secaucus, NJ...The Orioles selected RHP Grayson Rodriguez from Central Heights (TX) High School with their fi rst selection as the 11 th overall pick of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft...The O s selected INF Cadyn Grenier at No. 37 overall out of Oregon State University...Rodriguez, 18, was named a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game First Team Senior Preseason All-American and to the Texas-All Region First Team...As a junior, he led Central Heights (Nacogdoches) to the Texas 3A State title and was named the Texas Sports Writer s Association Player of the Year...Rodriguez was ranked as the No. 14 pitching prospect and the No. 24 overall draft prospect by Baseball America and the No. 22 draft prospect by MLB.com...Grenier, 21, hit.328/.415/.478 with 16 doubles, fi ve home runs, 60 runs, and 44 RBI this season...he was named the 2018 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-Pac-12 Conference First Team and All-Pac-12 Defensive First Team in 2018...Grenier was named a 2018 Preseason All-American by Baseball America...He was named the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year in 2015 at Bishop Gorman (NV) HS...Grenier was ranked as the No. 63 draft prospect by Baseball America and the No. 68 draft prospect by MLB.com...The Orioles selected 40 players overall: 22 pitchers and 18 position players, with 28 of the selections being college athletes...the Orioles selected 16 right-handed pitchers, six left-handed pitchers, seven infi elders, seven outfi elders, and four catchers. OUT OF LEFT FIELD: LF Trey Mancini recorded his team-leading seventh outfi eld assist last Friday against the Yankees when he threw out Gleyber Torres at third base...mancini s seven outfi eld assists are tied for the Major League lead (with Lorenzo Cain and Kole Calhoun)...Mancini notched two outfi eld assists in the bottom of the fi fth inning on May 21 at Chicago-AL...According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Mancini is one of just two players in Orioles history (since 1954) with two outfi eld assists in the same inning (also LF Don Buford on June 25, 1970 at Boston in the fi rst inning)...according to STATS, LLC., the last player in the majors with two outfi eld assists in the same inning was LF José Osuna of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who did so on July 6, 2017 at Philadelphia in the second inning. VS. SECOND BEST: 2B Jonathan Schoop hit a seventh-inning homer on May 18...It marked the 93 rd home run of his career...schoop passed Brian Roberts for the most home runs by a second baseman (primary position) in Orioles history (since 1954)...This year, Roberts was elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame and will be honored at a luncheon on August 10 and during an on-fi eld ceremony on August 11. THIS DATE IN ORIOLES HISTORY: On this date in 1986, RF Lee Lacy drove in six runs on three home runs and a single as the Orioles defeated New York, 18-9, at Yankee Stadium...LHP Tippy Martinez allowed three runs over the fi nal 3.1 innings, but earned a save after entering with the Orioles ahead 7-6 and the bases loaded in the sixth inning...the O s scored seven runs in the seventh to cement the win...
