Spring 2018 PAAK Catalog Welcome to Peoria Arts Academy for Kids Peoria Arts Academy for Kids (PAAK) was established to offer quality arts instruction to Peoria Academy students and eligible students from the Greater Peoria community. PAAK is formatted to be affordable and comprehensive. A variety of courses are offered each semester based on age and ability. This catalog contains course descriptions and registration details. Please read through this information carefully. Registration PAAK Registration is quick and easy on the Peoria Academy website. Head over to Peoriaacademy.org and click on the PAAK button under the Student Life tab and get ready for a semester filled with fun, creativity, and learning! Classes are filled on a first come first serve basis, so be sure to get registered online before classes fill up! Online Registration will conveniently send you a confirmation email and bill your account appropriately. Charges will appear on your next statement. We like to have all registrations in by the first day of class, but for your convenience will continue with on-going enrollment throughout the PAAK semester. Refunds will not be issued for classes once the course has begun unless the lesson is canceled by Peoria Academy. Peoria Academy reserves the right to change or cancel course offerings if deemed necessary. Participation in lessons is dependent upon student behavior. Peoria Academy reserves the right to remove any student who demonstrates unsuitable or disruptive behavior. If a student is removed from class, a refund will not be issued. Visual/Creative Arts Painting Cost: + $50 Studio Fee 2nd-8th Gr. Monday 4:00-5:00 Join Mrs. Schertz every Monday for an hour of relaxing painting! In painting students will discover an assortment of painting techniques ranging from blending, contouring, dry and wet applications, layering and much, much more! In painting we will mostly use acrylic paints, but we will experiment with washes, collage, and using liquitex mediums. We will also paint a variety of genres like pop art, expressionism, cubism, art deco, and landscape! Students can expect to take home around 6 complete paintings by the end of the semester! Glitter Gang Cost: + $50 Studio Fee JK-4th Gr. Monday 3:00-4:00 Unicorns, fairies, cupcakes, glitter...this class is for kids who love the sparkly side of life! Join Mrs. Schertz for an awesome class full of fanciful crafts. Students will make everything from glitter slime to sparkle lotion, decorate tiaras and wall art for your room, make bath jellies and relaxing glitter zen jars...need I say more? Sign up for the Glitter Gang before this class fills up! Jr. Art Club Cost: + $50 Studio Fee 1st-4th Gr. Tuesday 3:00-4:00 In Jr. Art club, students who love to art will get to express their passion an extra hour a week with one on one instruction from Mrs. Schertz. Kids will explore all areas of arts and crafts including painting, pastels, fun Pinterest projects, slime, seasonal themed crafts, and step by step drawing. We will also decorate sketchbooks and have cool sketchbook projects to do at home or in student s free time! Sign up soon while space is still available! Art Club Cost + $50 Studio Fee 5th-8th Gr. Tuesday 4:00-5:00 Art club is for the middle school students who love art and would like to enjoy the art experience all year long. Art club is a laid back class where we will enjoy, discuss, and create art every Tuesday night. Art club projects will be student-lead which means that the students will have a say in what mediums we use and what projects we do. We will also have an art fundraiser for PA, a graphic design contest to create the PA art show card and flyers, and gain first hand experience curating and preparing an art show for the 2018 PA Art Show. Storytime Art Cost: 1.5 Credits + $50 Studio Fee 3yr-K Thursday 3:00-4:30 Books open our imaginations to worlds of endless possibilities! What better way to spark creativity than combining the storybook world with the world of art. In Storytime Art we will read a story each class and then create an art or craft project to go along with the book! There s no limit to what you can create in Storytime Art! Instructor: Diana Janda Dr. Seuss Storytime Kitchen Cost: + $50 Studio/Supply Fee 3yr-1st Grade Friday 3:00-4:00 Have you ever tried Who Pudding? Who wouldn t like Pink Ink Yink Drink? Glunker Stew with Blueberry Bumplings yum! Aspiring young chefs, tie on your aprons and prepare your palates. This class is for you! After we listen to one of Dr. Seuss timeless tales, we will make and enjoy a culinary delight mentioned in the story. Get ready to create some wild and wacky fare in Dr. Seuss Storytime Kitchen! Physical Activities (non-iesa) Bulldog Cheerleading Pre K-5th Gr. Monday: 3:00-4:00 Do you have school spirit? Would you like to learn the fundamentals of cheerleading and dance? Come join Bulldog Cheerleading! Learn jumps, stunts, dance and cheers. We will perform a cheer/dance routine at the end of the semester. Go Bulldogs!!! Instructor: Joanie Sandford Bulldog Gymnastics Pre K-3rd Gr. Tuesday: 3:00-4:00 Come and learn the basics of tumbling! Bulldog Gymnastics is a progression-based class where skills are broken down into small steps to insure easy, skill-building success. Gymnastics is great for building self-esteem, strong bones, and a healthy heart. Instructor: Joanie Sandford Creative Movement K-4th Gr. Monday 4:00-5:00 Join Miss Tina each week where a different movement concept: ballet, modern dance, fitness, tumbling etc. is introduced and explored! This hour long class develops the total child through gross motor skills, balance, movement creativity, physical development and body awareness while having lots of fun! Instructor: Tina Pizzuti Tae Kwon Do Cost: K-8th Gr. and Parents Monday: 3:00-4:00 K-8th Gr. and Parents Tuesday: 7:-00-8:00am K-8th Gr. and Parents Wednesday: 3:00-4:00 Tae Kwon Do teaches basic self-defense. All forms of martial arts are utilized during instruction. This course is open to both students and parents. Dennis Zehr has been at Peoria Academy as the Tae Kwon Do Instructor for 15 years and received his 1st Degree Black Belt in 1987 and 6th Degree Masters in 2006. **TKD is available to Pre-K students pending a screening through Master Zehr Instructor: Dennis Zehr Yoga For You! Pre K-3rd Gr. Wednesday: 3:00-4:00 Come and learn about yoga for kids. Yoga has many benefits. It enhances flexibility, strength, and coordination. In addition, it helps with concentration, calmness, focus and relaxation. We will learn poses, partner poses and group poses. Fun themes will be implemented each week. Academic Classes and Clubs Chess K-8th Gr. Friday: 3:00-4:00 Chess is a classic game that develops spatial thinking and strategies to build focused concentration. This class is geared for all levels of chess players. Beginners learn basic game rules and opening tactic moves. Intermediate and advanced players learn sophisticated combinations and strategies and advanced opening moves. Learn From Murrel Rhodes, 2016 Illinois Chess Coach of the year. Tuesday 3:00-4:00 The winter Olympics are almost here! Basic music theory is incorporated into each lesson with an emphasis on proper technique. Both acoustic and bass guitar lessons available. At the appropriate grade level, students are encouraged to participate in the IESA Solo and Ensemble Contest. Wednesdays 8-8:30 AM, 3:00-5:00 PM, Thursday 8:00-8:30 AM In ukulele lessons, students will learn the basic methods of ukulele. Children will learn proper fingering techniques, single notes, and basic chords along with the ability to read music! The ukulele is a fun and easy way to get started on a string instrument and gain a musical discipline!
