The goal was her first of the season, to go along with two assists for a total of four points. Kirk also helped anchored down the Toreros defense to a pair of shutouts this past week, running the team s shutout total to 12. IN A NUTSHELL: The 14th-ranked University of San Diego women s soccer team (13-3-2, 5-0-0 WCC) will take their sixmatch winning streak on the road this week as they travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on Gonzaga University on Halloween in a 11:30 a.m. match. LAST TIME OUT: San Diego posted a perfect 2-0-0 record this past week, claiming a pair of 1-0 wins over Pepperdine University and Loyola Marymount University. In Friday s win over Pepperdine, San Diego scored the lone goal of the match in the 24th minute of action. A Waves defender committed a foul on the left side of the field, setting up a free kick. Junior defender Natalie Vinti took the kick for the Toreros and bowed the ball into a crowded goal box, where Ashley Kirk rose above all players and headed the ball into the back of the net to give USD a 1-0 victory. USD s senior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron picked up her seventh shutout of the season in goal as she allowed no goals and recorded six saves. In Sunday s win over LMU, Jackie Zinke tallied the lone goal of the match at the 79:53 mark. Christine Mock sent a cross to Elissa Magracia, who in turn sent the ball to Zinke, and Zinke then rocketed off a laser strike with no one in front of her into the back of the net to give USD the 1-0 win. Cameron picked up the win in goal for the Toreros as she allowed no goals and recorded three saves in recording her eighth shutout of the season. 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, California 92110-2492 619/260-7930 Fax: 619/260-2990 E-Mail: cloucks@sandiego.edu - www.usdtoreros.com

USD holds a 12-3-0 advantage over the Bulldogs, including claiming a 1-0 overtime win over GU in Spokane last season. The Zags offense is led by a pair of three-goal scorers in freshman forward Sarah Rhodes and sophomore midfielder Sheridan Jones. GU turns to sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Ames to anchor things down as she is bolstering a 1.29 goals-againstaverage. Gonzaga is under the direction of 10th-year head coach Shannon Stiles. During her tenure in Spokane, Stiles has posted an overall record of 79-102-10. THE POLLS: The University of San Diego women s soccer team held steady in all three polls this week, checking in as high as No. 14 in the latest Soccerbuzz top-30 poll and No. 16 in both the Soccertimes and NSCAA top-25 polls. Gonzaga is not ranked in any of the top-25 polls. WHERE WE STAND: San Diego is currently tied for first place in the West Coast Conference standings with No. 3 University of Portland at 5-0-0. Next Saturday Nov. 8, Portland comes to Torero Stadium in a match that will determine the WCC championship. Here are the scenarios for USD to win its first WCC Championship. If USD wins on this Friday against Gonzaga, and Portland wins as well, a tie or win against Portland next Saturday gives USD at least a share of the WCC championship. But if the Toreros lose this Friday against Gonzaga and Portland wins, the Toreros would need to beat Portland next Saturday to win a share of the WCC Championship. And finally, if both Portland and USD lose this Friday, a USD win or tie next Saturday will give the Toreros at least a share of the championship. SUDDEN IMPACT: San Diego freshman striker Stephanie Ochs has wasted no time making an impact at the collegiate level. Not only has been in the starting lineup from the start of the season, but she has emerged as one of the go-to players for USD. Thus far through her rookie campaign, Ochs has recorded three goals, two of which were game-winners, and added in two assists for eight points. GOOSE EGGS: The Toreros posted a pair of shutouts this past weekend, moving the season shutout total to 12. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron picked up both shutouts in the net for the Toreros, allowing no goals and recording nine saves. On the season, Cameron has lowered her goals-against-average to 0.54. HELP ME HELP YOU: Freshman forward Elissa Magracia has become one of the Toreros top play makers, as she leads the team with four assists, while also scoring a pair of goals to give her eight points on the season. Her assist in Sunday s 1-0 win over Loyola Marymount, was her second game-winning assist of the season, with her other coming in a 3-2 win over La Salle back on Sept. 12. 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, California 92110-2492 619/260-7930 Fax: 619/260-2990 E-Mail: cloucks@sandiego.edu - www.usdtoreros.com
2008 SAN DIEGO WOMEN S SOCCER ABOUT THE RECORD: San Diego has the third best record through the first 18 matches in program history at 13-3-2 (.778) overall, trailing only the 1999 squad who began the season 15-3-0 (.833) through the first 18 matches and last season s team, who was 13-2-3 (.810). GOING STREAKING: San Diego is currently in the midst of a six-match winning streak, dating back to their 1-0 win over Long Beach State University on Oct. 8. The Toreros will look to improve upon that streak this week with Friday s match against Gonzaga University 2008 GAMETRACKER AVAILABLE: All San Diego women s soccer home matches can be followed via Gametracker on the Toreros athletic web site at www.usdtoreros.com. Gametracker is a service of Online College Sports, the official web provider for San Diego athletics, and is a real time update of the action. Selected San Diego road matches are also available via Gametracker. THE GREENWOOD FILE: Since taking over the San Diego women s soccer program in 2003, Ada Greenwood has upheld the rich soccer tradition that San Diego is known for and continues to build a successful and nationally recognized program. Just the third coach in USD s storied 15 year history, Greenwood has compiled an overall record of 54-39-10 in his five seasons at the helm. As San Diego s top assistant from 1998-2002, Greenwood helped USD to a 66-30-5 record and four NCAA College Cup appearances. In his second year as a head coach in 2004, he guided USD to a 12-8-2 overall record, a 5-1-1 mark in the difficult West Coast Conference, and a second round appearance in the NCAA College Cup, maintaining USD s streak of six consecutive postseason appearances. For his efforts, Greenwood was honored as both the 2004 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year and the 2004 San Diego Union Tribune Coach of the Year. TOREROS TABBED THIRD IN WCC PRESEASON POLL: The University of San Diego women s soccer team has been tabbed to finish third in the West Coast Conference, according to a preseason WCC coaches poll released by the conference office. Coming off of its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament quarterfinal appearance, the University of Portland was selected as the preseason favorite to take home the 2008 WCC regular season title. The Pilots, who return five starters from last year s squad, received seven first place votes to tally 49 overall points. This marks the fourth straight year that the Pilots have been selected as the WCC preseason favorite. Santa Clara University was selected second with 42 total points, and received one first place vote, and USD checks in at third with 37 votes. Loyola Marymount was picked to finish fourth, with Pepperdine predicted to finish fifth and Gonzaga coming in at sixth. Rounding off the final two spots are San Francisco and Saint Mary s picked to finish seventh and eighth respectively. 2008 West Coast Conference Standings WCC OVERALL Team W L T Pts.
