Mississippi State Men s Tennis Notes 2017 NCAA Division I Men s Tennis Individual Championships May 24-29, 2017 University of Georgia Athens, Ga. MSU's Borges To Compete In 2017 NCAA Singles Championship; Braun/Foshey In Doubles The Mississippi State Bulldogs will be sending three players to the 2017 NCAA Individual Championships. This marks the seventh-straight season State has had at least one representative in the NCAA Individual Championships and the 32nd year all-time. Sophomore Nuno Borges became the program's 33rd player to earn an NCAA singles bid (59th selection) after an outstanding season on the court. The Bulldog, the No. 4 overall seed in the 64-player NCAA Singles field, became MSU's third SEC Player of the Year and first since 2001 after receiving the honor from the league earlier this month. Borges is the youngest MSU player to ever win the honor, being only a sophomore in achieving the feat. Borges has compiled an incredible 32-6 singles record in 2016-17 while posting an equally impressive 20-3 mark in dual-match play. The sophomore has also earned 22 ranked victories this season, including collecting four wins over Top 10 opponents. Joining Borges in Athens will be the State duo of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey after the pair received an at-large selection to the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship. The pair's selection marks the 27th time MSU has received a doubles bid. The sophomore duo has climbed up the rankings all season long as the tandem while compiling a 19-13 record. The tandem has clinched seven doubles points for the Maroon & White this season. Braun and Foshey have also earned 10 ranked wins, with four of those coming against Top 10 doubles teams at the time they faced off. MSU's NCAA Individual Championship History State's selections to this year's NCAA singles and doubles field give Mississippi State men's tennis 86 all-time selections in the national individual championships - 59 in singles and 27 in doubles. The best finish State has ever had in the NCAA Singles Championship was the quarterfinals (Laurent Orsini - 1994, Joc Simmons - 1994, Thomas Dupre - 1998). In doubles, All-American Bulldogs Laurent Miquelard and Joc Simmons paired to claim the 1994 NCAA Doubles crown in South Bend, Ind. No Sophomore Slump For SEC Player of the Year Borges As the No. 4 seed in the 2017 NCAA Singles Championship, Bulldog Nuno Borges has earned All-America status for the first time in his short career at MSU. Last season, the Bulldog notched a 21-6 overall record as a true freshman, while ranking 70th in the nation at season's end. Borges earned Second Team All-SEC, SEC All-Freshman and SEC All-Tournament Team honors to cap his stellar rookie campaign. Flash forward to 2017 and the sophomore Bulldog is an incredible 32-6 overall, while currently ranking fourth in the nation in singles play. Borges achieved a career-high ranking of 3rd overall in the February 8 ITA release (and again on 4/25), the highest by any Bulldog since All-American Romain Ambert in 2002. The Bulldog has spent the entire spring season in the Top 10, never dropping below 8th overall. Borges proved to be at his best against top competition as the sophomore collected 22 ranked singles wins in 2016-17. He was 4-3 against Top 10 foes. In dual-match play, the Maia, Porto, Portugal, native recorded a stellar 20-3 record this spring at the No. 1 position (9-2 in the SEC), on his way to being named the 2017 SEC Player of the Year. The honor marked the first for any MSU player since 2001 and Borges became the program's third player to achieve the feat. Borges also garnered First Team All-SEC, SEC All-Tournament Team and SEC Community Service Team honors to add to his treasure trove of awards in 2017. The Bulldog was also a force in the fall, claiming the singles crown of the ITA Southern Region Championships. Borges wouldn't stop there, as the sophomore reeled off three wins at the ITA National Indoor Championships to advance to the semifinals before falling to then No. 1 Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State. The semifinal appearance marked the best finish for any Bulldog ever at the ITA National Indoors in singles. Doubly Tough Sophomore Duo In what was easily a most successful season as a duo, sophomores Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey complied a 19-13 record overall this year, while going 12-10 in dual-match play. The duo has climbed to a career-best No. 8 overall in the country after defeating 10 ranked teams this season. Included in those ranked wins, the pair owns five victories over the current ITA Top 10 - No. 1 Loeb/ Zielinski (Georgia), No. 2 Ingildsen/Perez (Florida-twice), No. 6 Salazar/ Redlicki (Arkansas) and No. 10 Osama/Richie (Alabama). The Bulldog tandem also clinched seven doubles points to lead the Maroon & White in 2017, doing so against Alabama, Florida (twice), Georgia, Miami, South Carolina and Tulane. Over the fall, Braun and Foshey advanced to the finals of the ITA Southern Region Championships in doubles, falling in a tough three-set battle there. No. 18 MSU Men's Tennis Continues Success In 2017 While State is sending players to the NCAA Individual Championships again this year, the Bulldog team also had its fair share of success in 2017, ending with its 26th all-time NCAA Team Championship bid. While maintaining a Top 20 ranking for all but one week of the season, the Maroon & White advanced to the SEC Championship finals for the first time since 1996 after winning three-straight matches, upsetting topseeded Texas A&M in the semifinals before falling to perennial SEC champ Georgia in a tight 4-3 affair. The Bulldogs, led by head coach Matt Roberts and assistant coach Matt Walters, continued their success by securing the program's most wins since 1998 (and fourth-most all-time), defeating SMU in the NCAA First Round to earn their 21st victory of the season.
