LPG bulk storage facilities emergency response procedures IN CASE OF GAS LEAK Close the main shut off valve on the tank. IN CASE OF FIRE Raise a fire alarm. Close other valves on the LPG pipe-work. Ensure there are no open flames and other sources of ignition near the LPG tank Do not try to detect leaks with a naked flame. Evacuate all people within a 100m radius of the tank. Call for assistance from Fire Brigade. Close the main shut off valve on the tank if safe to do so. Close other valves on the LPG pipe-work. Cool the LPG tank with water from the fire hose reel if safe to do so. Evacuate all people within a 500m radius of the tank. Call the fire brigade. 8
LPG Bulk Transport INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING MARKINGS As well as the compulsory markings of the Highway Code applicable to heavy goods vehicles, road vehicles carrying bulk LPG must display markings in accordance with defined standards and requirements that are LPG specific The markings must include: Two orange 300 x 400 mm rectangles with a black 1m band around the edge, affixed horizontally, one at the front right and the other at the rear right of the vehicle; as well as at the rear of the trailer if there is one. Three square red labels symbolising DANGER, with a black or white flame and a black band m from the edge, 250 mm per side, placed with the corner pointing downwards. Observing safe filling and operation of bulk tanks FILLING TANKS WITH COMMERCIAL BUTANE OR PROPANE Understanding the effect of heat on liquid-phase LPG which can expand but cannot be compressed Understanding the effect of heat on gaseous-phase LPG can expand and can be compressed Acting accordingly to ensure operations are conducted in a safe manner by providing guidelines, procedures and documentation to customers 12
LPG Bulk Site Safety Inspections Sites inspected are categorized are as follows Low Risk Score above 75 % Medium Risk Score between 60 % and 75 % High Risk Score below 60 % Methodology 50 point checklist used for the inspections. Inspections done by LPG Sales Team after undergoing training. Inspections also done by the Safety Manager, Maintenance Engineers and members of the Management Committee. Excel spreadsheet used to collate findings, calculate safety ratings and develop action plans which are circulated internally and also to the customer. Results summarized and major action plans developed by HSEQ. 13
