ing (12-30) reduced their winning margin over Kew to 16 points The only section in which all teams in the four won was C Section, but there were some close ones Melbourne High beat traditional rivals, Uni High by only 9 points and leaders, St Kilda CBC hat only 11 points to spare from Alphington Parkside finished 29 points ahead of Power House, Old Ivanhoe won comfortably from Old Brighton and Old Melburnians overwhelmed Brunswick Hampton Rovers beat Old Geelong by 26 points and State Savings Bank didn't improve their final four prospects when they went down to National Bank by 2 points, poor kicking for goal being the main factor in their defeat Commonwealth Bank got home by 2 points from Old Camberwell, and Fawkner and Old Xaverians had easy wins over St Kevin's and Assumption respectively E Section was the one for upsets, as three of the top four teams were beaten, the exception being AJAX, who beat LaTrobe Blacks (fourth) by 2 goals and knocked them out of the four Elsternwick (second) were well beaten by ANZ Bank, the margin being 29 points, and St Pat's-Monivae (third) went down to AMP Society by the same margin, while West Brunswick beat Old Mentonians by 13 points in a bid to stay in the section North Brunswick, with an easy win over St Bede's, climbed into the four All of the home teams won in F Section, where Heatherton kicked a huge score of 41-25 (271 points) against Bulleen-Templestowe Bulleen United beat Thornbury by 15 points, Beverley Hills and Monash Whites had easy wins over University Reds and Glenroy, and Footscray Tech beat LaTrobe Reds by 5 goals The main Junior Section game resulted in Ivanhoe beating University Blues by 8 points (14-9 to 12-13) while the Blacks Overwhelmed Power House and Ormond easily accounted for Old Scotch: In Section 2, poor kicking cost Hampton Rovers the game against Bulleen-Templestowe, who won by 11 points (12-14 to 9-21) Old Carey beat Reservoir by more than 7 goals to knock them out of the four, St Bernard's, with a big win over Old Paradians, taking their place North Old Boys trounced Thomastown to shatter their final four hopes and West Brunswick beat Caulfield Grammar by 3 points Three Reserve leaders were beaten, Coburg going down to the Blacks by 3 goals, De La Salle failing badly against Collegians and ANZ Bank being well beaten by Elsternwick Other "four" teams to suffer defeat were Power House (13 points), Hampton Rovers (a goal) and Glenroy (28 points), all being beaten by the leaders in their respective sections ELIGIBILITY OF PLAYERS FOR RESERVE AND JUNIOR SECTION FINALS The attention of clubs is drawn to the Provided that no player shall be eligible restrictions which apply concerning players for inclusion in a reserve team tak eligible to take ng part i part in Final matches in the in a final match in any season unless such Reserve and Junior Sections player has been a member of such reserv The Rule relating to eligibility of players team in at least TWO home-and-home e in R A eserve Section Finals reads :- matches during the said season senior lt am ofoa nha s y club nin a nin e member more A player who has been a member of a matches during the home-and-home matches senior or reserve team in more than five in any season shall not be eligible for in- matches during any season shall be ineligible clusion in the reserve team of a club taking for inclusion in a junior team taking part part in a final match in the same season in a semi-final, final or grand-final match in unless both the senior and reserve teams the SA ME SEASON UNLESS he has been are same participating in a final match on the a member of the junior team for more than day five matches in the same season Page 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER -AUGUST 9, 1975 TODAY'S GAMES AND UMPIRES On ground of first named Club at 2 pm Reserves at 11 45 a m Likely winners of Senior and Junior matches in Bold Type Umpire for Reserves shown in brackets University A SECTION Reds v Footscray I T - Page 6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - AUGUST Q 1975 l~~pire's By Kevin McKay CORNER "DO YOU KNOW? " That umpires were first introduced into Australian Rules football in 1872 - prior to that the rival captains had decided any points and had awarded free kicks That uniforms were rifst introduced in 1873 - hitherto caps had been the only distinguishing mark That 1912 saw the league introduce the numbering of players The same year the Association introduced boundary umpires The League in 1912 introduced stewards with the power to report The first recorded football match was played on August 7th, 1858 between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School 1946 saw the-laws of the game amended to allow the replacement of two players The first night match in Victoria was played under electric light at Olympic Park in 1935 - attendance was 20,000 The Melbourne University Football Clu b was admitted to the League in 1908 and played in that competition until it disbanded in 1915 on account of the first world war ON THE SOCIAL SIDE Last Sunday we held our annual golf day at Torquay Golf Club and afterwards a bar-b-q at the home of David Dressing Dark horses Don Dodds and Andrew Burridge scooped the prizes for first and second place respectively Goal umpire Bill Ahlm came in 3rd - one stroke behind Andy Perhaps they do not know much about playing golf - but, I can assure you these fellows known all about taming Afghan dogs? Those who attended the bar-b-q know all about this, those who missed out really did miss out on this Greg Kitch, who took 15 for the first hole, thought he had won it The weather turned out quite fine and our thanks go to David for again arranging our golf and for the bar-b-q during the afternoon Rod Myors travelled down from Cranbourne and his score of 176 just about equals the number of miles he travelled, this score is a record for our golf day Monday, August 25th is the night of our annual dinner, which will again be held at the Park Royal Motor Inn, Royal Parade, Parkville A top Melbourne Group has been obtained for this night PENNANTS, CAPTAINS Clubs, In the running for this year's premiership are requested to notify the Secreta ry of the VA F A, of the colour requirements of the premiership pennant should they be successful in ' winning the premiership, for example - blue background, red border, white lettering This information is required immediately The name, address and phone number of the club captain is also required on a separate sheet of club letterhead PREMIERSHIP CUPS Club holding premiership cups, that is, the 1974 premiers in all sections, are requested to return the cups to Mr J Hickman, 4th Floor, Beehive Building, 94 Elizabeth St, Melbourne, immediately Cups must be cleaned before being returned AGE, HEIGHT, WEIGHT Clubs likely to be taking part in the semifinals and finals are requested to furnish the age, height and weight of players from whom the teams for these matches will be chosen, as soon as possible The information is required not later than MONDAY, AUGUST 18th Clubs with Senior and Reserve teams both in the finals are requested to furnish separate lists, showing in the Reserve team list ONLY those eligible to play with the Reserves, and omitting from the Senior list those players who have no chance of being selected in the senior team There may be a few players on both lists Lists must be in NUMERCIAL (NOT ALPHABETICAL) ORDER, and must be in the correct sequence - Number, Name, Initial, Age, Height, Weight e g 1 SMITH, C 20 5 11 12 3 3 PARKER, L 25 64 149 4 ROBINSON, R 18 5101 11 1 and so on Forward the information to The Amateur Footballer, Box 1564 P, G PO, Melbourne, 3001 Height is required in feet and inches and weight in stones and pounds (NOT METRIC ME ASURE) Lists should be submitted on forms handed to Delegates at the meeting on August 4th or forwarded to Club Secretary GROUND CHANGE TODAY ' Today's D Section match between ST KEVIN'S OLD BOYS and OLD XAVERIANS will be played at ST KEVIN'S OVAL, HEYINGTON, instead of at Albert Park THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - AUGUST 9, 1975 Page 7

COMING TO THE BLACKS' DEFENCE- ROD McLEAN University Blacks' defender, Rod McLean, has proved to be a most reliable back-man In his 100 or so games for the club, but he has also shown to advantage in many other positions - in fact he could be classed as a real utility player Rod, who hails from Cheltenham High School, joined the Blacks in 1970, after having played with Melbou rne (VFL) Third Eighteen He was quick to catch the eye of the Victorian selectors, for he represented his State in the match against Tasmania at Elsternwick Park the following year Since then he was overlooked for Interstate honours until this year when he played against South Australia, also at Elsternwick Park Rod has played most of his football in defence - back pocket or half-back flank, but he has also played on the half-forward line, as a rover and ruck-rover He was Vice-Captain of the Blacks in 1973 and last season he had a taste of League football, playing nine games with Melbourne Reserves He missed six VAFA matches, but still played well enough in the remaining 15 to win the Best and Fairest award Rod, who has just turned 25, is 6 feet tall, but at 11 stone 7, is rather light for his height He played his one hundredth game for the Blacks earlier this season, and his form should ensure that he chalks up many more Page 8 And there doesn't appear to be any reason why he should not get the chance to play in the Victorian side at the Adelaide Carnival in 1976 "Herald" Phone Numbers You may dial DIRECT to the Amateur Football rperesentative at the "Herald" Office The numbers are:- 652-1479 or 652-1893 If you have any difficulty, you may ring 63-0211 and ask for EXTENSION 1479 or 1893 RESERVE SECTION RESULTS to be phoned t o 652-1892 BEFORE 3 p m or DIAL, 63-0211 EXTENSION 1892 PRESS CORRESPONDENT -
