International Awards Night & Aspiring Young Athletes Grant Friday 10th February 2017 Imperial Hotel, South Mall, Cork @ 8p.m. On behalf of the Cork County Board of the Athletics Association of Ireland, I would like to welcome everybody here tonight to our Awards ceremonies.. It is indeed a great honour to represent your County & your Country, as very few people get to wear the green vest of Ireland. Congratulations to all our Athletes, Coaches and family members on attaining this standard. Continued success for 2017 William P. Allen, Chairman, Cork County Board.

Michael Harty East Cork Michael Harty (East Cork AC) won the overall race and M35 title at the Home International Cross Country in Tollcross Glasgow. In the process Michael led the Irish M35 team to victory in the team contest. Michael is in Kenya at present and returns home today so may not make the ceremony. Lizzie Lee...Leevale A.C. Marathon Lizzie fulfilled her dreams by representing Ireland in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Rio, 2016. She finished a marvellous 57 th place, in a time of 2:39:57 Joan Healy Bandon A.C. One of the top female sprinters in the country. Joan competed in the European Athletics Championships as part of the 4x100m relays team Silver medallist in 100m at National Senior Gold medallist in 100m at Irish Universities

Phil Healy Bandon A.C. One of the top female sprinters in the country. Phil competed in the European Athletics Championships as part of the 4x100m and 4x400m relays teams. Silver medalist in 400m at National Seniors Silver medallist in 100m at Irish Universities Famously ran the anchor leg in the 4x400m relay to help UCC win Gold at the Irish Universities Tim Twomey Leevale A.C. Tim ran in the British & Irish Masters Cross Country Championships in Tollcross Glasgow in November 2106 & finished 3 rd overall in the M35/45 race. He was 1 of the 4 Cork men on the Irish M35 gold medal winning team.

Carmel Parnell Leevale A.C. Carmel claimed her 8 th consecutive British & Irish Masters Title & her 10 th overall in Tollcross Galsgow in November 2016. Claire McCarthy...Leeva!e A.C. Half Marathon In July 2016 Claire represented Ireland at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam. She ran in the half marathon, where she finished a very respectable 48 th place in a time of 1:16:02 3

Louise Shanahan...Leevale A.C. 800M Louise was representing Ireland in Bydgoszcz, Poland at the World U20 Championships where she competed in the 800m. In the semi-final she finished 6 th in a time of 2:08:43. A marvellous achievement by Louise to get to a world semi-final. Charlie 0'Donovan...Leevale A.C. 1,500M Charlie competed at the European Youth Championships in Tiblisi, Georgia in July2016 running in the 1500m where he qualified for the il final & came 8 in a time of 4:03:90. He was also selected to run on the Irish Junior Mens X-country team in Chia, Sardinia in December where the team finished 6 th overall. 4

Michelle Finn...Leevale A.C. 3K Steeplechase. What a busy year 2016 has been for Michelle. She competed for Ireland, in the 3K Steeplchase at the European T&F Championships in Amsterdam in July & then at the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio in August. After a superb run at the Inter Clubs X-Country Chapionships she was selected to run on the Irish Womens X- Country team in Chia, Sardinia in December where the Irish team finished 6 th H Alex Wright Race Walker Leevale A.C. Alex competed in the 20K & 50K walks at the 2016 Olympic Game in Rio. At his Olympics debut he finished 46 th in the 20K walk, in a time of 1:25:25.

Mark Hanrahan Half Marathon Leevale A.C. Mark was selected to run for Ireland at the European T&F Championships in Amsterdam in the half marathon. Unfortunately due to illness Mark had to pull out of the race after 10k. We look forward to seeing him on the international stage again in 2017 Darragh McEIhinney Bantry A.C. Bronze Medal Celtic International ul7 Cross Country Scotland. All Ireland Clubs ul7 1500m Champion Achieved 1500m qualifying standard for the European Youth (ul8) T&F Championships. National Youth Indoor & Outdoor Record 3000m 8.18.88 (Ranked no 1 ul8 indoors over 3000m in Europe & World at 6/2/17

Laura McSweeney Bandon A.C. Member of the Irish Universities Track and Field Team which competed against Scottish Universities where she won the Shot Put. County Senior Champion in Shot Put, Hammer and Discus. Gold medallist in Shot Put at National u23 Bronze medallist in Shot Put at National Seniors Gold medallist in Shot Put at Irish Universities Bobby Smith...Bandon A.C. Member of the Irish Universities Track and Field Team which competed against Scottish Universities where he placed 4th in the Javelin Bronze medallist in Shot Put at Irish Universities.

Shane Howard Bandon A.C. Member of the Irish Universities Track and Field Team which competed against Scottish Universities where he won the Long Jump Silver medallist in Long Jump at National Seniors Gold medallist in Long Jump at National u23 Kathleen O'Brien A.C. St. Catherine's Kathleen represented Ireland at the British and Irish masters cross country in Glasgow this year. She competed in the W70 age category where she finished 3rd individual and helped Ireland to 3rd team place. 8

Fearghal Curtin...YoughaI A.C. Represented Ireland on the Irish Cross Country team in the U20 Men's European Cross Country Championship in Chia, Italy 2016 which placed 6th. Represented Ireland again in the U20 Men's Celtic Cross Country in Wales to win Individual & Team Gold. Aidan Hogan Rising Sun A.C. Started training in January of 2016, increased mileage from 100 a week to 200 & 250 miles weekly. Ran National 24 hour championships in Belfast running 148 miles and finishing 2nd. Represented Ireland at the European championships in France. Ran 40+ Marathons around Ireland in the past year, sometimes 2 in one day. Ran over 3,000 miles in the past year. 9

Noelle Lenihan North Cork A.C. Noelle Lenihan had a number of achievements at International level as a Paralympic athlete competing for Ireland in the Discus in 2016..Noelle warmed up for her first Paralympic Games by winning the 2016 European title in Grosseto, Italy in June. Her gold medal winning throw of 32.14m was a new world record. In the Paralympic Games in Rio, she won bronze with a best throw of 31.71 m even though she had sustained an injury during the build up to the Games. Following Rio, she was named Young Paralympian of the 2016 Paralympic Games by Paralympics Ireland. She is trained by her father, Jim Lenihan Patricia Curtin...Youghal A.C. Won silver medal at the International Celtic Intervarsities in Scotland.

Rob Heffernan Togher A.C. Rob Heffernan was the first Irish athlete to be selected for five consecutive summer Olympic Games. Rob delivered yet another excellent performance at a major championships as he crossed the line in sixth place in the Olympic 50km Walk in Rio Olympic games in August 2016. Last November, the Bronze Olympic Medal for the 50km race walk was presented to Rob four years after the 2012 London Olympics where he came in fourth place, Russian, Sergey Kirdyapkin was stripped of his Olympic title in March 2016 for a doping violation, allowing Rob to take his rightful place on the podium. The ceremony took place in Cork City Hall on November 3 rd 2016. The packed house was bursting with pride and in awe of the man who in both character and achievements has won the hearts of Cork and Ireland. 2016 was a phenomenal year for the Togher AC athlete, rewarding him with just accolades for his hard work representing Ireland in athletics throughout the years. Michelle Kenny Leevale A.C. Michelle competed in the British & Irish Masters Cross Country championships in Tollcross, Glasgow in November 2016. Michelle was 1st Irish lady home in 6th place and helped the Irish team secure the bronze medal position.

Aspiring Young Athletes The following athletes in the opinion of the Selection Committee have shown constant progression in performance in inter club competitions and Cork County Board A.A.I. wish to honour this achievement with a bursary as an encouragement to continue improvement in their chosen events. Sarah O'Keeffe Liscarroll A.C. Combined Events Bronze in Munster Junior Indoor Shot Putt Silver in Munster U17. Indoor 60m Hurdles, Bronze in Shot Putt. Gold in County 100m & 300m Hurdles, Silver Shot Putt, Bronze in Hammer Silver in Munster Shot Putt & 100m Hurdles. Gold in County, 100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles, long Jump,Shot Putt,Hammer, & Javelin Laura Nicholson Bandon A.C. M. Dist A talented & dedicated athlete who has been capped on a number of occassions for her country at XC & T&F and in both steeplechase and 1,500m. A prospect for the future.

J, I Jack Hallahan Midleton A.C. Throws I Jack made a good comeback after missing most of the 2015 season, due to an on-going illness, (to perform extremely well at County, Munster and All-Ireland level in the u 17 age group level in 2016 in both the Discus and Hammer. Jack had lepresented Ireland at the Discus at the Celtic Games in Santry in 2015, where Jack claimed Silver on the day.. ack set C.B.P. in the Discus at ul4 and ul5 at the All-Ireland T&F in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Rebekah 0'ConnelI...LiscarroIl A.C. Hurdles Gold in Munster Junior Indoors 60Mh & Bronze in 60M.Sprint. Silver In Munster Under 19 60Mh, Bronze in 60M Sprint, Bronze in 200M Sprint' Gold in County 100M Sprint Silver in Munster Junior 100M hurdles & Bronze in 100M Sprint

Tamzin Muldowney Midleton A.C. Middle Distance Tamzin was selected for the ul7 Irish Development (Cross-Country team at the I.A.A.F. Antrim International held in Greenmount College on Saturday, 16 th of January 2016. Tamzin finished a very credible 4 th in the U17 category and was second s corer for the Irish team. This was a fantastic performance j rom a very dedicated and committed athlete. Even though, r ^amzin has had a few setbacks through injury she continues to strive for excellence and is presently making a good comeback. Laura Hayes St. Catherine's A.C. Middle Distance. 2016 was a busy year for Laura. In the second half of the year her focus switched to athletics and the cross country season. She won East Cork U18 and Cork U17 races, and was second in Munster U17 and third Munster U18. Unfortunately due to a damaged hamstring her performance in the national cross country championships was not as good as possible. She has bounced back starting 2017 by winning the south Munster schools cross country. The influence of being part of the Munster endurance squad has also been of huge benefit.

Gold in County U17,100M, Long Jump, Shot Put, Javelin & Silver 200m. Silver in Munster Junior Shot Putt, & 3 rd in Javelin. Silver in All Ireland Combined Events Gold in Munster U17 Shot Put, & Javelin, & Silver 100m & 300m Hurdles & 400m Sprint All Irelands. Silver in 300m Hurdles, Shot Put & Javelin Gold in Munster Senior 400m Hurdles & Silver in Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin & Shot Gold 100m, Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin, Silver in Shot Putt. Kevin O'Leary Liscarroll A.C. Hurdles Silver in Munster Junior Indoor 60m Hurdles. Gold in Munster Under 19 Indoor 60m Hurdles Silver in All Ireland 60M h. Gold in County 100M Hurdles Silver in Munster Junior 110M Hurdles Gold in Munster Underl9 60M Hurdles Silver in All Ireland Under 19 110 M Hurdles

Damien Madigan Middle Distance. North Cork A.C. Damien Madigan made a strong start to his year in 2016 when he was the 2nd Irish finisher in the Junior race at the Celtic International Cross Country in Edinburgh. This set him up well for the track season where he recorded some strong results. In the indoor season he won the Munster under 17 1500m in a time of 4:25 and then in the outdoor season was 3rd in the Munster under 17 1500m in a time of 4:25.. Damien later went on to finish 10th in the All-Ireland 1500m in 4:27. He finished the year strongly when he finished 3rd in the All-Ireland under 17 cross country, which again gained him selection on the Irish Junior Development cross country team in Antrim where he finished 12th overall for Ireland. Damien has only been in the sport a couple of years but has shown great progress.

Stephanie Cotter...West Muskerry A.C. Middle Distance Stephanie Cotter had an outstanding Cross Country season. She had taken a break for almost 3 years but her love for running was never lost. She knew she would have a lot of work to do to get back to the form she was in when she stopped and this she certainly achieved. She worked extremely hard at training in all sorts of weather to get her fitness back and then she set her goals high and worked even harder to achieve these goals winning West Cork, County Munster and All Ireland Titles at U 18, U19 & Junior levels. The icing on the cake came when she represented Ireland for the first time in Cardiff in January and she wore her Irish singlet with pride. She is an inspiration to the younger members of West Muskerry A.C. She is a hardworking, determined and talented young athlete and a name to watch out for in the coming years as I'm sure she will be representing her Club, County and Country in the near future. n Ciara Hickey B.I.A.C. A.C. Pole Vault. Ciara took up pole vault at the end of 2015 and started competing in May 2016 She took to it like a duck to water She competed in every competition available to her from juvenile to senior and finished the year with a P B of 2.90m which she passed twice already this year

Maebh Daly Javelin Carraig na bhfear A.C, 'Maebh has been involved in athletics since she was six years old and she has never lost her love for the sport. She is a very talented and determined young athlete that has stuck with athletics despite numerous setbacks to go along with all her successes. 2016 provided a well deserved return to form for Maebh when she won a Munster silver medal in javelin then rounded off the season with an excellent 5th place finish at the national championships. She is determined to continue improving in 2017 Maebh is also a very good coach to the younger athletes, always encouraging and helping them. She is a great role model for the younger athletes in Carraig na bhfear AC.' Clodagh Walsh Abbey Striders A.C. Pole Vault Competes in Pole-vault under the guidance of Eamonn Flanagan. Attends Davis College, Mallow.

Ben O'Donovan Abbey Striders A.C. High Jump An exceptionally talented high Jumper with many under age and junior success. & Damien Hie key... Abbey Striders. 7' i LongJump r Sir A multi event athlete with many schools titles and international schools medallist at Glasgow last year. Attends Davis College, Mallow. Coach; Chris O Regan.

Ellen McCarthy.. Skibbereen A.C. Middle Distance Ellen had an outstanding Cross Country Season in 2016 winning medals at County, Munster and All Ireland level. In the Cork County Championships she won the silver medal in second place under 18 while at under 19 level she won Bronze in 3 rd place and came 4 th in the Junior ladies race. Ellen then progressed to the Munster A Cross Country Championships. At under 18 level she finished in 7 th place while also winning a team gold medal with Cork. In both the under 19 and Junior women's race she was very impressive finishing 3 rd in both as well as winning a team gold with Cork at Junior level. The first leg of the All-Ireland A Cross Country Championships took place at the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Co.Dublin. Ellen again competed at under 18 and Junior level, running strongly from the start she finished 14 th and 22 nd respectively winning inter county Bronze with Cork and Gold with Munster at under 18 while also claiming team silver with Cork at Junior level. Finally on Sunday 11 th Dec the second leg of the All-Ireland Championships were held at Dundalk IT where she competed at under 19 level and running a superb second lap of the 4km course finished in 10 th place overall winning an individual medal while also winning a silver team medal with Munster.

Anna Leamy... Grange/Fermoy A.C. Javelin Anna has been a member of Grange Fermoy ac since she was 6 and has been competing in numerous events essentially Cross Country and Javelin. Here are her achievements in 2016: Javelin: 3rd at Munster Championships with 28.76m and 2nd at All Ireland with an improved best throw of 31.97 Alannah Neff...Leevale A.C. Middle Distance 2016 was a great year for Alannah, who is showing great promise at 1500m & 2K Steeplechase. In 2016 she took gold in the 1500m at the Munster T & F Championships & was 2 nd in the 2K steeplechase at the National Championships. She is also an integral member of X- Country teams. Darragh McElhinney...Bantry A.C. All Ireland Clubs ul7 1500m Champion Achieved 1500m qualifying standard for the European Youth (ul8) T&F Championships All Ireland ul8 XC Champion

IJames Murray Good Old Abbey A.C. _ Competed in various tracks races in Ireland and Belgium during the summer And cross country, finished high up in the Lotto cross international in Mol Belgium 2016 Was on the Munster team for national junior XC and finished 37th overall. Padraig 0'Callaghan...Leevale A.C. Shot/Hammer Padraig is a very consistent athlete & continues to improve in both disciplines. He secured 3 rd place in the Hammer, at the 2016 National Championships, with a throw of 49.83. He also helps out at events when he is not competing.

Liam Cotter Bantry A.C. Middle Distance. Liam started athletics at eight years of age. Getting on the Munster performance squad had always been a goal for him and was delighted to be chosen a couple of years ago. The last few months he has not been able to train due to a knee injury but he hopes to be able to get back in time for the track and field season with the steeplechase being his favoured event. I Lauren 0'Mahony...Youghal A.C. Javelin In the Junior Competitions Lauren placed 2nd in the Munster's with a throw of 31.65m and in the All Ireland she placed 3rd with a throw of 30.58m. In the Schools Competitions she placed 2nd in the Munster's with a throw of 31.79m and in the All Ireland's she came 4th with a throw of 32.77m.

Kevin Jelenak Togher A.C. Throws. Kevin joined Togher AC in June 2016 and in his first Irish competition broke the U17 Munster record which stood for 32 years with a massive throw of 55.46 mts. Kevin went on to secure silver at the U17 all Irelands Cian Kingston Bandon A.C. Throws Cian has followed in the strong throwing tradition in Bandon Athletic Club. He has consistently competed in the shot and discus at a high level and has represented his club, school & county at All Ireland level over the last 5 years. Last year he was selected & took part in the Tailteann Games & finished the season off with a bronze medal in the community games.
