HRCR Historic Road Rally Championship 2002 RESULTS It s been the busiest year yet for the HRCR Historic Road Rally Championship. With 16 rounds contributing to five separate Challenges, there has certainly been something for everyone. After the disappointment of 2001 when only four rounds survived the foot & mouth crisis, the 2002 series remarkably ran through with every round running on its originally scheduled date. The competition in every Challenge was intense, with all three major Challenges going right to the last round to decide the winner Congratulations to the 2002 HRCR Historic Road Rally Champions, David Hughes and Richard Dix, who demonstrated that a big Volvo can beat the Minis! PREMIER CHALLENGE The drivers championship went right down to the wire, with Dave Hughes doing just enough on the Classic Illuminations to finish one point ahead of Worth Birkill. Having both missed Round 2, the Alan Rogers, and with Worth s non-finish on the Welsh Retro, these two crews had to come from behind but finished well ahead of all other challengers. Len Olds was usually fastest on tests in his TR4, but Paul Heal, mostly navigated by son Matthew, posted some consistent scores to claim third place in the Challenge. Richard Dix has dominated the navigators table, following his first ever win (with wife Gill) on the Alan Rogers. For all other rounds he was with Dave Hughes in the Volvo, and they capped their championship victory by taking their long-awaited first outright win together on the Ilfracombe. Andy Ballantyne, navigating in Len Olds TR4, held second navigator place, albeit 50 points behind the winner. Paul Robinson s challenge was doomed after a non-finish on the Targa Rusticana, with no opportunity to replace it with a better score. However, as Paul has won 1 st place in the Nocturnal Challenge, the 3 rd place Premier Challenge navigator award goes to Judy Howles. NOCTURNAL CHALLENGE After a poor start to the year, when they non-finished on the Gremlin and missed the East Anglian Classic, Terry Pickering and Paul Robinson in the Triumph TR3 pulled out all the stops on the last five rounds to post a shattering set of points. As the TR3 had to finish the Ilfracombe to win the Challenge, the chasing contenders had to be there just in case it faltered, but it survived to take a creditable third place and net the 2002 Nocturnal Challenge. Nocturnal Challenge Rounds R1 Gremlin R4 Welsh Rally Retro R5 East Anglian Classic R8 Half Night R10 St Wilfrids Wesley Massam and Bernard Northmore had taken the early lead in R12 Rallye Bristowe the Challenge in their Volvo PV, but their points were not good enough R14 Classic Illuminations to hold on when they had to start dropping scores. R16 Ilfracombe Premier Challenge winners, David Hughes and Richard Dix put up a good challenge to the rapid TR3, finishing second. However their Premier Challenge awards take precedence, thereby giving second overall driver to Dick Appleton and the second navigator award to Bernard Northmore. Ian Young, navigator in Tony Brooks Saab Sonett, announced his retirement after the Ilfracombe, but does have the third placed navigator award as consolation. 1 st Nocturnal Challenge Terry Pickering Paul Robinson 2 nd Nocturnal Challenge Dick Appleton Bernard Northmore 3 rd Nocturnal Challenge Wesley Massam Ian Young Drivers Car Best 6 R1 R4 R5 R8 R10 R12 R14 R16 1 Terry Pickering Triumph TR3 244 2# 38 42 42 40 42 40 2 David Hughes Volvo 122 228 2# 37 35# 38 37 37 39 40 3 Dick Appleton Mini Cooper S 223 38 38 37 35# 35 38 37 4 Wesley Massam Volvo PV 444 206 37 31 22# 36 38 33 31 5 Peter Noad Audi 80 GT 178 34 37 37 37 33 6 Tony Brooks Saab Sonett V4 164 28 23 27 30 32 24 7 Peter Baker Lancia Fulvia 1600 153 35 19 7 36 24 32 8 Worth Birkill Morris Mini 150 2 32 40 37 39 9 Brian Cope Mini Cooper S 132 29 34 2 35 32 10 Paul Heal MG BGT 128 32 32 33 31 Navigators Best 6 R1 R4 R5 R8 R10 R12 R14 R16 1 Paul Robinson 244 2# 38 42 42 40 42 40 2 Richard Dix 228 2# 37 35# 38 37 37 39 40 3 Bernard Northmore 206 37 31 22# 36 38 33 31 4 Ian Young 164 28 23 27 30 32 24 5 Michael Valentine 158 40 39 40 37 2 6 Shon Gosling 148 19 35 33 28 33 7 Peter Cox 145 34 37 37 37 8 Dave Wilson 107 30 39 2 36 9 Andy Ballantyne 97 33 28 36 10 Matthew Heal 96 32 33 31 # indicates a score not counted in the best 6
CLASSIC CHALLENGE The success of this challenge in 2002 has shown just how many HRCR members enjoy daytime historic rallying. This year s series has also shown that not all rallies of this type are just a tour around the lanes, or alternatively, a navigator s nightmare. The Targa Rusticana and the Palladwr were highly rated as challenging drivers events Richard Dix, partnering wife Gill in their MG Midget on most of these rounds, was top scoring navigator by a country mile, but having won the Premier Challenge with Dave Hughes, he couldn t take this one as well. The Palladwr saw a final face off between Gill Dix and Peter Goldsbrough, in his pretty Renault Alpine A110, for the top driver. Neither finished in the top 10 but Peter s better result gave him the 2002 Classic Challenge. Len Olds, who has been showing everyone how fast a TR4 can go around the special tests, took an overall win on the final Classic Challenge round, to claim third driver spot. These results were enough for Andrew to claim a well deserved top navigator award. HERO CHALLENGE for Pre-1960 Cars In its second year, the HERO Challenge is doing its bit to bring out the older cars, which are always good to see on these historic rallies. And there has been plenty of variety; Sunbeam Rapier, Austin A35, VW Beetle, Wolseley 1500, Volvo PV, Daimler Dart and Triumph TR2/3 have all scored points. The award winners have shown that these pre-1960s can even compete on even terms with the later models. On his way to the HERO Challenge win, Terry Pickering has collected overall wins in his TR3, even on competitive night rallies. The TR3 s navigator on the night rallies was Paul Robinson, but despite getting six maximums in this challenge, he didn t score on two daytime events and so didn t get into the HERO Challenge awards. Wesley Massam and Bernard Northmore, in the Volvo PV, scored well early in the season to take a lead, so Bernard was there at the end to collect the top navigator award. 1 st HERO Challenge Terry Pickering Bernard Northmore 2 nd HERO Challenge Wesley Massam Chas Davies 3 rd HERO Challenge Terry Schraider Dave Cooper 1 Terry Pickering 89 2# 2# 15# 14 15# 15 15 2# 15 15 10# 15 2 Wesley Massam 84 15 13# 6# 14 12# 13 14 9# 14 10# 14 12# 13# 3 Terry Schraider 80 14 13 14 13 13 13 4 Keith Wilson 73 14 15 9# 13 9 11 7# 2# 11 2# 5 Peter Pratt 60 2 5 12 15 14 12 6 Jeremy Ford 58 10 7 11 5 13 12 7 Andi Crellin 57 12 2 15 12 2 14 8 John Kiff 54 11 12 12 6 13 9 Paul Simmonds 54 14 13 10# 8# 12 15 10 Laurence Burrage 53 14 11 14 14 9# 9# 1 Bernard Northmore 84 15 13# 14# 12# 14 13 14 9# 14 10# 14 12# 13# 2 Chas Davies 80 14 13 14 13 13 13 3 Dave Cooper 74 14 15 12 13 9 7# 2# 11 2# 4 Paul Robinson 62 2 15# 15# 15 15 15 15 5 Stephen Myers 58 10 7 11 5 13 12 6 Mark Kelly 57 12 2 15 12 2 14 7 Alison Simmonds 54 14 13 10# 8# 12 15 8 David York 47 13 11 10 11 2 9 Julie Eaglen 45 2 5 12 14 12 10 Robert Kiff 43 12 12 6 13 # indicates a score not counted in the best 6 Note: You couldn t count more than 4 scores from either the Classic Challenge rounds or the Nocturnal Challenge rounds in the best 6. NEWCOMERS CHALLENGE It regularly happens, that crews who start the year as Novices, or even Beginners, by the end of a long season s rallying are mixing it with the Experts and going for top 10 placings. This year our Newcomers Challenge contenders have come on in leaps and bounds, none more so than the 2002 Newcomers Challenge winners, Wesley Massam and Bernard Northmore in the red Volvo PV. We never expected Newcomers Challenge contenders to be collecting awards in the Nocturnal Challenge, but these have done it. And with their HERO Challenge awards as well, they ll need assistance to carry away their collection on February 22 nd. Runners up Pam Butterworth and Shon Gosling started the year in the most unlikely of rallying vehicles, a Land Rover, but then brought out a Wolseley 1500 on later rounds. Third placed crew, Phil Shingler and Eric Richardson, in the Mini with the novel remote controlled Retrotrip, took third Newcomers Challenge place.
