After waiting nearly two weeks since qualifying for their second consecutive Big Sky Conference championship tournament, the Wildcats are set to take on rival Idaho State during Friday s 3 p.m. semifinal round matchup at Davis Field. It s the second matchup of the season between the Wildcats and Bengals, with Weber State having defeated Idaho State 1-0 on Oct. 6 at Wildcat Soccer Field in Ogden, Utah. Friday s contest will be the 18th all-time meeting between the two schools, with WSU holding a 10-6- 1 series advantage. Weber State has won three straight in the series, dating back to the 2010 season. When you get to this point of the season, it comes down to the team that is the most consistent team for 90 minutes that day, Weber State coach Tim Crompton said. There are four good teams here in this tournament, and any one of them is capable of winning it. We ve had a good two weeks of practice and our players are excited to be here and have a chance to compete for the championship. Our goal as a team is to come out on Friday and work hard and give ourselves a chance to win the match. Friday s contest will mark just the third meeting between the two teams in the postseason, where Idaho State is 2-0-0 against Weber State. The Wildcats and Bengals met in the 2001 Big Sky championship match and the 2006 semifinal round, with Idaho State winning each contest 1-0. Weber State comes into the tournament with a 4-1-1 mark over its last six matches, having defeated North Dakota 4-1 and tying Northern Colorado 1-1 during the final weekend of the regular season to qualify for the four-team tournament. No. 2 Portland State and thirdseeded Montana will meet in the first semifinal at 11:30 a.m., with the winners of the two semifinals matches set to meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. to decide the Big Sky title. Idaho State has won four straight, having not lost since that 1-0 decision at Weber State, earning part of a three-way share of the Big Sky s regular season title and with it hosting rights to the tournament. Weber State is making its second consecutive appearance in the Big Sky tournament and 11th appearance overall. Weber State is 9-7-2 in Big Sky tournament play, making seven appearances in the tournament final and winning three times (1998, 2004, 2005). Weber State coach Tim Crompton is 5-3-2 in six appearances in the tournament, with the Wildcats advancing to four Big Sky title matches and winning two championships under the ninth year head coach. Weber State currently starts eight freshmen, two sophomores and a junior, making the Wildcats one of the youngest teams in Big Sky Conference history to advance to the postseason. Weber State s top two point earners are both freshman. Midfielder Chansi Crompton has scored four goals and dished off six assists which is a new record for most assists by a freshman at Weber State for 14 points overall. Forward Mackenzie Harrison has four goals and an assist for nine total points. Crompton was named as the Big Sky Conference s Newcomer of the Year on Tuesday after finishing the regular season as the league s assist leader. She was also named to the All-Big Sky Conference first team, as was freshman defender Brecken Holbrook.
Holbrook started in all 18 matches and played a team-high 1,540 minutes this season, helping anchor a defense that allowed just 20 goals in all matches and just five during nine conference matches. The Wildcats post a goals-against average of 1.10 during the season, and lowered that to 0.540 during the nine-match conference season. Holbrook also scored the matchwinner in a 1-0 result against Southern Utah, and assisted the match-winner in a 1-0 win over Idaho State. Crompton led the Wildcats to the Big Sky Conference title each of his first two years, and he was honored with the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year award both seasons. In Crompton s inaugural season as head coach, he guided WSU to the program s second Big Sky Championship and to its first-ever berth in the NCAA College Cup. The Cats finished the season at 8-10-2 overall. After finishing the Big Sky regular season in fourth place at 2-2-2, the Cats posted two shutouts to knock off Portland State and Montana and claim the Big Sky tournament title. In 2005, the Wildcats won their secondstraight conference title, posting the third-best record in school history. The Cats also advanced to the second round of the NCAA College Cup with a shootout win over Brigham Young, and narrowly missed advancing to the Sweet 16, falling to Arizona 1-0 in the second round. In 2008, the Wildcats claimed the Big Sky regular season championship with a 5-2-0 conference record (9-10-2 overall). WSU extended its streak of Big Sky postseason appearances to six-straight years and made it four-straight years of finishing in the top two in the league standings. The Cats fell to Northern Arizona in the conference title game. In 2011, Weber State finished in third place in the Big Sky regular season, but advanced to the Big Sky postsean championship match before coming up short in a penalty kick shootout against Montana. Under Crompton s charge, the Wildcats have posted a 62-78-16 overall record and have won over 57 percent of their Big Sky Conference regular season games (27-19-7,.575). Crompton is 5-5-2 as a head coach in postseason play, with his teams advancing the Big Sky title match four times. Crompton graduated from Weber State in 1996 with a degree in Physical Education and Coaching and currently holds a United States Soccer Federation National A License. Tim and his wife Dani have two children, Chansi, who will be a freshman on this year s team, and Rhees.
