Makfi Challenge Stakes 2014 Scapolo did not appear again until October in his 3YO year, when he was taken to Australia where he raced 7 times for 3 wins, 2 seconds, and a third including a black type placing at Flemington in the VRC Fashion Stakes. Since returning to New Zealand July 2013, Scapolo has raced 10 times for 7 wins with his best performance coming when winning last year s Group 2 Coupland s Bakeries Mile at Riccarton. Last Saturday s win at Riccarton over 1200m took Scapolo s record to 10 wins and 7 placings from 20 starts and took his stake earnings to $306,374. Scapolo was bred by The Oaks Stud, being by their resident sire Bachelor Duke and is the third foal from the two time winning Zabeel mare Kadesa. Her first two foals, Superninsky & Dragon Bachelor (HK), have both won three races apiece, but it is Scapolo who became the star performer for Kadesa and looks to be a strong candidate for Group 1 glory in the foreseeable future. Kadesa is a full sister to the Australian stakes winner Zingo, who has a 2YO Makfi filly, is due to foal to Makfi again in 2014 and will visit the dual Group 1 winner Reliable Man this season. By coincidence, Kadesa is currently infoal to Reliable Man, so Scapolo s performance in the Makfi Challenge Stakes will be watched with some strong interest by a number of parties. With the Group 1 Makfi Challenge Stakes just 22 days away, we look at another high profile runner featuring in the entries, as we look to gain a closer understanding of who might claim New Zealand s first Group 1 race of the 2014-15 racing season. SPOTLIGHT ON: Scapolo Details: Breeding: Owners: Trainer: 5YO Bay Gelding Bachelor Duke x Kadesa, by Zabeel Anne, Khalif, Rick, Sandy & Teneka Hill Kevin Myers A highly talented son of Bachelor Duke, Scapolo has always looked well above average and he looks to be in a great shape after an easy 3.5 length victory at Riccarton last week. Scapolo was a rare 2YO performer for leading trainer Kevin Myers, running three times at two for a second and two thirds two of these placings coming in black type races.

A Swiss Ace x Renediym filly was the first two-year-old to step out on the track for the 2014/15 season at Te Teko on Tuesday and ran third. A halfsister to the stakes placed juvenile, Serein, the Swiss Ace filly is also trained by Graeme and Debbie Rogerson and didn t put a foot wrong in her trial pleasing the Hamilton based trainers. The oldest progeny of Makfi have just turned two and the reports from pretrainers, breakers and trainers alike have been glowing. We are really looking forward to his stock stepping out on the track over the course of the new season.
