World Fisheries Day 2017 was celebrated in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat by organizing a series of special events such as clean-up activities, mass awareness meeting, competitions etc., by involving fishers, students and fisheries officials. 4 The one day hands on training programme on Value Added Fishery Products organized on 16 th November 2017 at Dadanpatrabar Matsya Khuti, Purba Medinipur was attended by 27 fisherwomen of 3 different SHGs from Dakshin Purushottampur, Dadanpatrabar and New Jaldah. Shri. Prasanta Bar, Secretary Dadanpatrabar Kharpai Matsya Khuti attended the auspicious training programme. Shri. Atanu Ray, State Coordinator, NETFISH welcomed all the trainees, delegates and dignitaries in the programme and briefly described the activities of NETFISH and the aim of the programme. He said that Mandermoni is one of the major tourist places in West Bengal and therefore the SHGs if prepare hygienic value added fishery products can sell them throughout the year, fetching better price. Shri. Subrata Maiti discussed about the Fish Nutricart at Vishakhapatnam and wished to setup at least a shop by the SHG ladies near to the sea coast. For the training, all the ingredients, vegetables, fish, prawn, necessary utensils and accessories were arranged and the SCO demonstrated preparation of various products such as fish ball, fish pickle, prawn pickle, coated prawn products such as breaded butterfly, breaded stretched shrimp, fish pakora etc. to the trainees and they too were engaged in the process. Recipes of the above said products printed in Bengali language were given to the participants. The trainees were convinced by the taste and quality of the products prepared and they gained confidence to prepare these fish items on commercial scale. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Shri. Ujjwal Kr. Sar. The World Fisheries Day was celebrated on 21 st November 2017 by organizing a harbour clean-up programme at Deshapran Fishing Harbour, Purba Medinipur, with the active participation of VHSE students and teachers of Kishorenagar Siksha Sadan, Contai, Harbour Officials, Harbour Data Collector, NGO member, Harbour cleaning staff, fishermen and net menders. The event was inaugurated by Shri. Pradyut Pahari, Special Officer, Deshapran FH. The SCO welcomed all the participants and narrated the importance of the day. General awareness on importance of hygiene in fishing harbour, personal hygiene, conservation of resources and sustainable fishing, different crafts &

5 gears used for fishing etc. were provided during the inaugural session. Afterwards all the participants provided with cleaning tools, hand gloves, caps and waste collection bags were engaged in cleaning the harbour. A good quantity of waste, plastic bags, PET bottles, plastic cups, thermocol pieces, broken nets & ropes etc. were collected from the premises of the harbour and bleaching powder was applied in drainages, jetties as well as in unsanitary areas. Also, circulated leaflets on marine pollution and conservation aspects to the fishermen as well as the general public. Besides involving in cleaning the harbour, the event opened up opportunity for the vocational fisheries students to know about infrastructural facilities available in the harbour, fishing boat and their utilities, different navigational equipments such as GPS, Fish finders, Radio transmitter set, compass set, Deserter Alert Radio Transmitter system (DART), life jacket etc. used in fishing boat, various floats, sinkers, otter board, winch etc. The member NGO Sarboday Sangha associated with NETFISH in organizing the event. In addition to the above, the following are the works and activities performed during the month. 7 A special awareness programme was conducted at Pradeep on 20 th November 2017 during which the trawler crew members were provided with boots, t-shirts, hand gloves and caps as part of improving the hygiene while handling fishes. SCO along with representatives of member NGO, SRMSS generated mass awareness among the fishing vessel crew, auction hall workers and supervisors on hygienic practices to be followed in fishing vessels and harbours. A team comprising 2 members from the European Commission visited Paradeep harbour on 21 st November and monitored the facilities and activities in fishing vessels and the harbour. In addition to the above, the following are the works and activities performed during the month. 9 Welfare Association. Around 70 Tuna fishermen of Jalaripalem village of Pudimadaka, Visakhapatnam attended the awareness meet during which cleanliness in landing center was discussed mostly. Shri. Hanumantha Rao, SCO NETFISH informed the significance of World Fisher day celebration, need of conservation of fishery resources and measures to be taken for sustainable fisheries. The meeting was followed by a clean-up drive for which waste collection bags, gloves, caps and brooms were arranged and all the fishermen and officials actively collected plastic waste, torn net pieces and carry bags from the landing center premises. In addition to the above, the following are the works and activities performed during the month. 11 Awareness Programmes on Marine Biodiversity for school students were conducted on 17 th of the month at Kamaraj Middle School and St.Theresa s Girls Higher Secondary School, Kasimedu, Chennai, through the NGO- Fisheries Professional Organisation (FPO). Nearly 600 students took part in the 3 awareness programmes during which lectures on Marine biodiversity were given and then oration and drawing competitions were conducted on topics related to marine pollution and protection of marine environment. The objectives of the programmes were to create awareness on conservation of marine biodiversity and its importance among school students of fisher community and to sensitize the role of school students to spread the knowledge on marine biodiversity conservation to their parent s, family members, neighbor and friends. The prime winners of the competitions were presented with medals and gifts on 21 st November in a function organized by the fisheries department at Chetpak, Chennai where Mr. Jeyakumar, Fisheries Minister, TamilNadu handed over the prizes. Certificates to the winners and participants were also distributed.

12 On the eve of World Fisheries Day, NETFISH and FPO, Nagapattinam jointly organized a clean-up event at Nagapattinam Harbour in collaboration with Fisheries department. The programme had active participation from Fisherfolks, fisher women, and fisheries officials. More than 60 fisherwomen from various fishing villages in and around Nagapattinam participated in the rally conducted prior to the clean-up activity. The rally started off from Nagapattinam fishing harbour and reached back after covering Akkaraipettai & Keechankuppam villages. The fisherwomen held pluck cards and banners with slogans on save the marine life. Then the clean-up activity was carried out by which debris in and around Nagapattinam harbour was removed with the help of volunteers. On the same day a Consultative Workshop on Sustainable Fisheries and Square Mesh Promotion was also organized at Poombuhar in association with MSSRF. Fisherfolk from different villages in and around Poombuhar fishing harbour took part in this programme, which aimed to sensitize fishers on usage of square mesh cod end and its benefits. Dr. Sakthivel, Scientist, MSSRF welcomed the gathering and explained the purpose of the workshop. Dr. R. Balasubramanian, State coordinator, NETFISH and village Panchayath leaders, Mr. Ponnusamy and Mr. Vetriselvan felicitated on the occasion. Dr. Velvizhi, Head, Fish for all Centre, MSSRF explained the importance of World Fisheries Day and Dr. Gokulakrishnan, Head, Department of Zoology, Arts and Science College, Poombuhar, delivered the lecturer on Marine fishery resources and its current status. 14 13 29.11.17 Pamban, Ramnad Dry Fish 30 Training programmes on GPS and troubleshooting for safe navigation were arranged in 4 fishing villages in Kanyakumari district- at Arokyapuram on 9 th, at Kovalam on 10 th, at Keelamanakkudy on 22 nd and at Manakkudy on 23 rd of November 2017, to enable fishermen to venture into deeper waters safely, mark fishing zones and to plan fishing trips with proper navigation aid. These trainings were arranged through MSSRF, Nagercoil and Mr. A. Mubarak Ali, Project Associate, MSSRF imparted the trainings. The GPS trainings conducted were demand driven and were organized based on a series of need assessment carried out in these fishing villages. The mechanized and motorized boat fisherfolk who regularly venture into sea for fishing as drivers, boat owners and fishing labours, fishers who own/planned to purchase a GPS device but without appropriate skills to handle it and fishers who have interest to learn new skills and technologies were the beneficiaries of these trainings. The one day training covered both theoretical and practical aspects of operating GPS and understanding and managing it on troubleshooting. The forenoon sessions were more descriptive and theory oriented employing teaching aids such as pamphlets and power-point presentations and the afternoon session envisaged practical and hands-on training with GARMIN 72 model GPS. Dr. Vinoth S. Ravindran, State coordinator, NETFISH expressed the relevance of the programme among fishermen and the interest and social responsibility of NETFISH- MPEDA and MSSRF to train fisherfolk towards skill development. Response sheets were provided to the participants to know the requirements of the trainees and also to know their basic knowledge. In commemoration of World Fisheries Day 2017 NETFISH in association with TamilNadu State Fisheries Dept. organized value added seafood making/seafood cooking competition for fisherwomen, essay writing and drawing completion for school children and swimming competition for fishermen. The swimming competition conducted on 20 th of the month at Chinnamuttom landing centre had a participation of 12 fishermen from various fishing villages of Kanyakumari. On 21 st November, at Colachel Harbour, exhibition stalls were setup by NETFISH, Fisheries Dept., MSSRF, Reliance Foundation etc. Free Eye check-up camp was also organized for fishers. Fisherfolk from different regions of Kanyakumari actively took part in the event. The NETFISH stall displayed various

15 extension posters, pamplets, MPEDA publications and publicity poster of 21st India International Seafood Show. Also, the use of gumboots, gloves and plastic shovels for hygienic handling of fishes on-board and in the landing centers were emphasized by display of the sample items. Lot of fisherfolk and officials visited the stall. Artists of Anal Gramiya Kalai Kuzhu extended the messages of NETFISH through skits, plays, dramas, songs, music and dance. The crowd, mainly fisherfolks was enthralled by their performance and received the message positively. Shri. Sajjan Singh Chauhan, IAS, District Collector of Kanyakumari visited NETFISH-MPEDA stall and appreciated the displays. The seafood cooking competition was also conducted on the day which was participated by 15 teams of fisherwomen. The District Collector distributed the cash prizes, certificates and mementos to the winners of the various competitions conducted as part of the celebration of World Fisheries day. He also initiated the NETFISH Fishermen aid program of distributing free plastic shovels to fishers. Later, a publicity vehicle announcing fisheries related schemes of Govt. of TamilNadu, importance of sustainable fishing, hygienic handling, and information regarding endangered species, safety at sea etc. travelled all along the fishing villages of Kanyakumari, from Neeroodi to Arokyapuram. The group was given hands on training on preparation of 11 items such as fish cutlet, fish finger, fish roll, fish samosa, dry prawn masala, fish wafers, fish curry, fish pickle, dry prawn chutney, fish soup and traditional fish fry ( pollichathu ). The training programme was inaugurated by Dr. Jai Singh Meena, Director in charge, NIFPHATT in a function presided over by Dr. Joice V. Thomas, CE NETFISH. The trainees actively participated in the training and they were distributed certificates. They expressed their deep gratitude to NETFISH and NIFPHATT for arranging such a useful training programme for them. NETFISH Kerala North celebrated World Fisheries Day on November 21 at Munakkakadavu harbor by organizing a harbour clean-up drive by fishers and harbour workers, jointly with harbour workers coordination committee. Harbour workers

19 actively took part in the clean-up drive and the entire harbour area and premises were cleaned. NETFISH provided gloves, cleaning tools etc. for the programme. From 19-21 November 2017, NETFISH participated in the Matsyotsavam 2017 expo organized by the Dept. of Fisheries at Kozhikode by setting up an exhibition stall displaying self-explanatory posters on various recent developments, issues and problems in the fisheries sector including minimum legal size, plastic pollution, chemical adulterants in fish, trawl ban period, advantages of square mesh cod end etc. In addition to this NETFISH leaflets in Malayalam and English language were given to the visitors. MPEDA Director (Marketing) made a visit to the stall. The stall attracted good numbers of fishermen, students, and the general public. NETFISH Sea Club at St. Albert s college, Ernakulam conducted one day seminar on Adulterants in Sea foods on 17th November 2017, with an aim to enlighten the awareness

20 of the students regarding the issue. Smt. Priya E.R., Scientist, Quality Assuarance and Management division, CIFT, Kochi inaugurated the programme and delivered the key note address. Dr. Sabu S., Assistant Professor, CUSAT, Kochi delivered a talk on the Importance of Freshness and Quality in Sea foods. The seminar helped the students and other members of the Sea Club to know more about the most recent details regarding the issue of adulteration in sea foods. Mr. Prashant, gave a talk on marketing and financial management and Mrs. Nidhi gave the training on preparation of different products like fish mols (pickle) & fish chutney powders using dried mackerel, clam, shark, prawns and anchovies. In connection with World fisheries day, harbour clean-up and fishing vessel clean-up demo were organized on 26 th November at Belekeri harbour. The programme was attended by the President and Vice President of Mechanised fishing vessel union, Belekeri, Secretay of Fishermen Co-operative Society, Belekeri, Boat owners and crew members, Fishers of Belekeri fishing harbours, members of SHGs, NGO-SCODWES and HDC, Tadri. During the inaugural session importance of maintenance of hygiene and sanitation in work place was explained to the gathering and they were urged to properly utilize the facilities provided in the harbour and to practice hygienic fish handling onboard and inside the harbour. Then a demonstration on proper way of cleaning fishing vessel, fishing harbour and auction hall was done for the participants. Hygiene kit consisted of liquid hand wash, hair oil, comb, tooth paste & brush and Fishing vessel cleaning materials such as Chlorine water, liquid detergent, buckets & brush, high quality hand gloves were distributed among the fishers in the programme. A total of 25 boats were cleaned on the day and the remaining boat owners assured to clean their boats at fishing ground.

A total of 20 students and teachers participated in this beach cleaning programme and collected monofilament net pieces, pieces of thermocol, plastic carry bags, mineral water bottles, plastic chappals, shoes, pouches of tobacco, etc. Training on Preparation of Value added fishery products were conducted at Vengurle and Kelus in Sindhudurg district on 29 th November, 2017, to promote livelihood of fisherwomen through skill development. The training in Vengurle was participated by 10 women whereas 15 women participated in the Kelus programme. Products such as Fish Cutlets, Fish Wada and Prawn Pickle were prepared in the programmes as per the guidance of an expert person, Mrs. Manali Kudalkar. The programmes were conducted with local cooperation of Nagarik Bahu Uddeshiy Seva Pratishthan, Sindhudurg.

25 Training on Operation of GPS, Fish finders etc. were conducted at Kelus and Vengurle on 30 th November, 2017 based on the demand from fishermen. At Kelus 25 fishermen participated in the programme and at Vengurle the number of participants were 26. These programmes were conducted with local cooperation Nagarik Bahu Uddeshiy Seva Pratishthan, Sindhudurg. Mr. Amey Raorane, who was the trainer in the programmes, demonstrated the operation of GPS, fish finder and other navigation equipments and cleared the difficulties of fishers in understanding the colour lines and graphs in fish finders. 27 To commemorate World Fisheries Day, a harbour clean-up programme was arranged at Porbandar in association with Porbandar Machhimar Boat Association, fishermen community of Porbandar and Porbandar Municipal Corporation. Around 200 volunteers joined the clean-up programme which started from eastern end of harbour and moved towards western end and a huge quantity of waste was removed from the harbour. The leaders of fishermen community urged the temporary both holders to keep clean their own premises and to keep sign boards. Member NGO B.A.Yadav Education and Rural Development Foundation Trust, Veraval had made remarkable effort for organizing the programme.
